:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
U.S. to Offer Turkey Help on PKK

The U.S. is to offer Turkey a package of measures to dissuade Ankara from mounting a large-scale military incursion into Iraq to attack PKK Kurdish guerrillas, who have killed scores of Turkish soldiers in recent weeks.

Ahead of a meeting in Washington on Monday between President George W. Bush and Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey’s prime minister, U.S. officials said Ankara would have to get concrete American help to combat the PKK, which has bases in northern Iraq from where it frequently launches attacks into Turkey.

“Erdogan has to go back with the belief that for whatever reason, the U.S. is serious” about tackling Turkey’s concerns regarding the PKK, said Matthew Bryza, deputy assistant secretary at the U.S. state department responsible for Turkey policy. Full story...

“RADIO STAR SAVAGE FIGHTS BACK, SUES MUSLIM GROUP CAIR....”

I applaud Michael Savage. Free speech does NOT singularly apply to CAIR! Regarding the first amendment: The most basic component of freedom of expression is the right of freedom of speech. The right to freedom of speech allows individuals to express themselves without interference or constraint by the government.

CAIR'S assault on free speech

This is CAIR's modus operandi: appearing to oppose terrorism, while simultaneously leading the charge against those who actually seek to thwart it.

Fort Lewis MPs find stolen handgun, “suspicious device”

FORT LEWIS, Wash. — Military police at Fort Lewis have arrested a man after finding a handgun and a “suspicious device” in his car after making a routine traffic stop in one of the post’s training areas.

The arrest was made about 1 a.m. Friday.

In the car, the MPs found a pistol that had been reported stolen, and in the trunk, a “tape-wrapped object about the size of a deck of playing cards wired to a garage door opener.”.......

Spokane school calendar omits Christmas

A Spokane public school newsletter to the families of elementary students omits Christmas from it list of important dates in December.

The list includes Hanukkah, Human Rights Day, winter break, an Islamic holy day, the first day of winter and Kwanzaa. But no Christmas.

A district spokeswoman, Terren Roloff, says "In our efforts to be inclusive, we missed the obvious."

After some parents complained, the district added Christmas to the online version of the newsletter.

EU disappointed after nuclear talks, Iran digs in

Published: 11.30.07, 19:15 / Israel News

The European Union said it was disappointed after talks with Iran on Friday seen as a last chance to avert US pressure for tougher international sanctions over Tehran’s disputed atomic program.

The absence of a breakthrough at the London talks means six world powers meeting in Paris on Saturday will try to agree new penalties to propose to the United Nations, despite differences in their approach to halting Iran’s nuclear program. (Reuters)

None Survive Turkish Plane Crash

~snippet~

The plane crashed in an area that was not on its scheduled route, according to Semsettin Uzun, the governor of Isparta Province. “We don’t understand how it landed there,” he said.

The Associated Press quoted Ali Ariduru, in charge of Turkey’s civil aviation authority, as saying that there were no signs that either terrorism or sabotage had caused the crash.

The plane’s wings and engines were torn off, and were found on top of the highest peak in the area, which is about 6,000 feet high and has a communications tower, said Ismail Macika, the mayor of Keciborlu. The main fuselage came to rest 500 feet below on the mountainside.

Mr. Uzun, the provincial governor, said, “The body of the plane is there as a whole and the wings don’t exist; I have never seen anything like this.”

MICHIGAN MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO SUPPORTING HIZBALLAH

Attempted to provide night vision equipment and GPS technology to Hizballah

DETROIT - A former resident of Dearborn, Michigan, pleaded guilty today to providing material support to Hizballah, a designated foreign terrorist organization, Stephen J. Murphy, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan, and Kenneth L. Wainstein, Assistant Attorney General for National Security, announced today.

They were joined in the announcement by Andrew Arena, FBI Special Agent in Charge in Detroit, and Brian Moskowitz, Special Agent in Charge of Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), in Detroit.

Fawzi Assi, 47, formerly of Dearborn, Michigan, entered the guilty plea in United States District Court before Judge Gerald E. Rosen. Mr. Assi admitted that, on July 13, 1998, he attempted to board an airplane at Detroit Metro Airport on an international flight for Lebanon. At the time he had in his possession two Boeing global positioning satellite modules. He also had night vision goggles and a thermal imaging camera in his luggage. He was attempting to deliver these items to a person in Lebanon, who was purchasing the equipment for Hizballah, which was at the time, and currently is, a designated foreign terrorist organization.

“We will be unswerving in our pursuit of those who seek to support international terrorists.” said Mr. Murphy. “Anyone who gives money, technology, or other material support to any terrorist organization will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. I applaud the excellent work of the FBI, ICE and the dedicated lawyers in our office, whose tireless work led to the successful resolution today.”

FBI Special Agent in Charge Andrew G. Arena said, “This case was initiated before September 11, 2001 and I would like to thank the dedicated agents who have been a part of this case. Material support of terrorism is a very serious offense and the FBI will continue to aggressively investigate and pursue these matters.”

“I commend the excellent work of our partners, the FBI and CBP on this national security investigation,” said Brian M. Moskowitz, Special Agent in Charge of the ICE Office of Investigations in Detroit. “This collective work prevented the illegal exporting of licensable technology and military items to a designated terrorist organization.” Moskowitz’ area of responsibility covers the states of Michigan and Ohio.

At the time of his arrest Mr. Assi had been living in Dearborn and was a mechanical engineer for the Ford Motor Company. Shortly after his arrest in 1998, Mr. Assi was ordered released from custody during a hearing in which the government sought to have him detained. He fled to Lebanon and remained there until May 2004 when he returned to the United States. He has been in custody since that time.

Under the terms of the plea agreement, Mr. Assi faces up to ten years imprisonment and a fine of up to $250,000.
