"Only positive energy flows from a mosque," said Magomed Abdurakhmanov, 32, an official from the mufti's administration, as he gave the Guardian a tour of the construction site. "This building will radiate goodness across Chechnya."
When finished, it will accommodate 10,000 worshippers; an Islamic school and a new residence for the mufti are being constructed next door. It is hoped the mosque will encourage a new generation of believers to rediscover their traditional faith. But the battle for the soul of Chechnya is still far from over. The militants remain a dangerous force, and have vowed to kill "the puppet Kadyrov".
One government official admits they are skilled at luring recruits into the hills. "Their promises of a glorious death and passage to paradise can be very attractive to disillusioned young people," he said.
Thank you Oorang.
I’ll add that to my link list.
Thank YOU MamaDearest.
BIG DITTO.
“”Their promises of a glorious death and passage to paradise can be very attractive to disillusioned young people,” he said.”
Yes, and that’s the global jihad — young and old.

IAEA unsure of Tehran’s nuke program
By Simon Morgan
November 23, 2007
AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE
VIENNA, Austria
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) “has so far not been able to verify some important aspects of Iran’s nuclear program,” Director-General Mohamed ElBaradei told a board meeting here.
He specifically cited key questions related to the scope and nature of Iran’s centrifuge enrichment activities, “as well as those relevant to alleged studies and other activities that could have military applications.”
As a result, the IAEA is “unable to provide credible assurance about the absence of undeclared nuclear material and activities,” Mr. ElBaradei said.”

Bali bomber: Australia “will be down next year”
“I regret that there are Muslim people (who died) and Allah akbar if there are kaffir people (unbelievers) who died.”
“Bali bomber warns: Australia is next,” by Cindy Wockner for The Daily Telegraph (thanks to Morgaan Sinclair):
ONE of the key Bali Bombers has issued a chilling warning from his death row prison cell, warning Australia “will be down next year”.
Imam Samudra and two of his cohorts on death row for their role in the 2002 bombings were yesterday defiant, unapologetic and welcoming of their forthcoming executions as they were visited in their island jail by some of their family members.
Samudra, the so-called field commander of the Bali bombers, took the opportunity to hold a “press conference” to correct what he said was misinformation.
He had never said he was sorry about the bombing, he was only sorry that Muslims died, he said.
“I regret that there are Muslim people (who died) and Allah akbar if there are kaffir people (unbelievers) who died,” he said.
As the 2½ hour visit ended, Samudra beckoned The Daily Telegraph over and issued his warning: “Australia will be down, next year Australia will be down.”

Iraqi school guard and wife beheaded as children watch
Feel the love.
From Christian Today (thanks to Pamela):
BAGHDAD - Three suspected al Qaeda militants, including two sisters, beheaded their uncle and his wife, forcing the couple’s children to watch, Iraqi police said on Friday.
The militants considered that school guard Youssef al-Hayali was an infidel because he did not pray and wore western-style trousers, they told police interrogators after being arrested in Diyala province northwest of Baghdad.
The three cousins executed Hayali and his wife Zeinab Kamel at the all-boys school in Jalawlah in Diyala province, village police chief Captain Ahmed Khalifa said....

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “An explosion aboard a bus in Russia’s North Ossetia region has killed at least five people, including a nine-year-old girl, and hurt 12.
The bus was travelling from the city of Pyatigorsk and had stopped on the border with the Kabardino-Balkaria region when the explosion took place.
“It was an attack,” a police official told AFP news agency.
Unrest linked to militants and criminal gangs is common in Russia’s Caucacus republics bordering restive Chechnya.
The blast was caused by a device containing over 300g of explosives and loaded with nails and scraps of metal, police sources told the Reuters news agency.
As many as 19 people were on the bus, including two drivers, when the explosion took place.
Russian prosecutors have begun investigating the blast as a terrorist attack, according to the Interfax news agency.”

LEBANON
November 23, 2007
This Public Announcement is being issued to alert U.S. citizens to safety and security concerns related to the presidential election in Lebanon. This Public Announcement expires on January 30, 2008.
The U.S. Department of State is concerned that the current presidential election season in Lebanon may pose security issues for U.S. citizens in Lebanon. Lebanese President Emile Lahouds term of office is scheduled to end on November 24, 2007. On November 23, President Lahoud declared a state of emergency and asked the Army to take control of the countrys security.
There is a strong possibility for demonstrations and unrest during this period. The U.S. Embassy urges U.S. citizens who live, work, or are traveling in Lebanon to exercise responsible security practices. Be aware of your surroundings and avoid potentially threatening events such as demonstrations or other public gatherings. Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence. U.S. citizens should maintain a low profile in public and avoid predictable or habitual behavior.
The Embassy is located in Awkar, near Antelias, Beirut, Lebanon. Public access hours for American citizens are Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.; however, American citizens who require emergency services outside of these hours may contact the embassy by telephone at any time. The telephone numbers are (961-4) 542-600, 543-600, and fax 544-209. American citizens may register with the embassy online by visiting https://travelregistration.state.gov/ibrs. Information on consular services and registration can also be found at http://lebanon.usembassy.gov or by phone at the above telephone numbers between 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday local time.
Updated information on travel and security in Lebanon may be obtained from the Department of State by calling 1-888-407-4747 within the U.S. and Canada or, from outside the U.S. and Canada, a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444. Troops Detain 7 in Raids on al Qaeda Media Network
American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, Nov. 23, 2007 Coalition forces in Iraq detained seven suspects today in three coordinated operations targeting al Qaeda’s media network southeast of Samarra.
One of the targeted buildings is believed to be used as a propaganda production facility and meeting location for senior leaders, officials said.
“These operations are another step on the road to a peaceful Iraq, where innocent civilians can live without fear of terrorist attacks,” said Army Maj. Winfield Danielson, a Multinational Force Iraq spokesman. “Defeating al Qaeda’s propaganda networks undermines their fundraising and recruiting.”
In operations yesterday in Iraq:
— Iraqi soldiers and concerned local citizens in Hawr Rajab, repelled an attack by about 15 members of al Qaeda in Iraq, killing two terrorists and wounding an unreported number. Al Qaeda began the attack with small-arms fire and mortars early in the morning, targeting an Iraqi army checkpoint. Small-arms fire continued throughout the morning. Coalition forces supporting the Iraqi army called in helicopter support from 3rd Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade. The attack helicopter crews killed two al Qaeda members and wounded two others. Then deployed a U.S. Air Force F-16 dropped a 500-pound bomb on a van that was transporting weapons, destroying it and all of its contents. Though they suffered casualties during the defense of their checkpoints, the Iraqi army and the concerned citizens group stood their ground, officials said. The attackers broke off after being unable to overrun the checkpoints.
— Coalition forces targeted al Qaeda propaganda cells during operations in Samarra. As the ground force approached the targeted building, they called for the building’s occupants to come out, but no one complied. One individual took a defensive position by the door and engaged coalition forces. Responding in self-defense, the ground force returned fire, killing the terrorist. While securing the area, the ground force detained two suspects and found a weapons cache, which was safely destroyed by a coalition air strike.
— In Hawija, coalition forces captured a wanted individual believed to be the foreign terrorist leader in Arab Jabour, and who allegedly is associated with senior terrorist leaders in Baghdads southern belt. The wanted individual identified himself to the ground force and was detained, along with one other suspect.
— In Mosul, coalition forces targeted a northern al Qaeda in Iraq security leader believed to be involved in kidnappings and assassinations. They detained two suspects. Coalition forces also detained four suspects during operations targeting associates of a former al Qaeda media leader near Khan Bani Sad.
— An Iraqi emergency response unit, advised by U.S. Special Forces, detained five suspected extremists during an early morning operation in Daghgharah. The operation, conducted north of Diwaniyah, targeted an extremist cell reportedly involved in improvised-explosive-device attacks against Iraqi and coalition forces in Diwaniyah and Hillah. This cell also is believed to gather intelligence for attacks against Iraqi and coalition forces and to transport and store weapons and IEDs, officials said. The capture supported the 8th Iraqi Army Division’s Operation Lion Pounce, an ongoing operation to disrupt extremist groups operating in Diwaniyah and the surrounding region. No Iraqi or U.S. forces were injured during the operation.
In operations Nov. 21:
— Soldiers of the 3rd Iraqi Army Division uncovered a large weapons cache during a routine patrol northwest of Tal Afar. The cache included 4,200 pounds of homemade explosives, four sets of Iraqi military uniforms, 12 82 mm mortar rounds and 10 hand grenades.
— Soldiers of the 5th Iraqi Army Division and U.S. forces came under sniper fire while attempting to clear terrorists from villages near Abu Khamis. Iraqi and U.S. forces responded to the attack, killing two terrorists. In the course of the operation, three Iraqi soldiers were injured.
(Compiled from Multinational Force Iraq and Multinational Corps Iraq news releases.)
Is atomic radiation as dangerous as we thought?
Officially 47 people -- members of the emergency rescue crews -- died in Chernobyl from exposure to lethal doses of radiation. This is serious enough. "But overall the amount of radiation that escaped was simply too low to claim large numbers of victims," explains Kellerer.
The iodine 131 that escaped from the reactor did end up causing severe health problems in Ukraine. It settled on meadows in the form of a fine dust, passing through the food chain, from grass to cows to milk, and eventually accumulating in the thyroid glands of children. About 4,000 children were afflicted with cancer. Less well-known, however, is the fact that only nine of those 4,000 died -- thyroid cancers are often easy to operate on.
