Thompson Tied for First in National Poll; Giuliani in Free Fall

While Fred Thompson travels the nation with his message of consistent conservatism and touts his border security and immigration reform proposal, a recent national tracking poll shows that Thompson has pulled into a virtual tie with Rudolph Giuliani. This poll further shows that Giuliani has lost almost a third of his support in the last 12 days.

In a separate Field Poll conducted in California, Giuliani's "support has eroded markedly among the party faithful, setting up the prospect of a shootout in February's primary," wrote the San Francisco Chronicle, dropping 10 points since August.

Earlier this week, a Rasmussen poll showed Giuliani and Thompson both statistically tied with Hillary in a head-to-head matchup in Ohio.

My agenda is that I don’t want Hillary... or Edwards or Obama. I want to continue the Bush foreign policy and keep the economy strong. Again, I like Fred, I just don’t see where he has tyhe ability to really get moving or win votes from the middle.

Listening to Thompson drone on is a great alternative to sleeping pills. I can't imagine how the man could show less enthusiasm about running for President. The only thing that could get his campaign going is if people sent in Red Bull instead of money.

Rudy got free press yesterday about his near-assassination at the hands of the mob. And, pundits said that he won Sunday night's debate. As you pointed out, the list of notable people who are now unemployed thanks to working for his campaign is the only thing impressive about this candidacy.

I can't remember any Republican who has been given so much hype and so totally squandered it so quickly. If this is the best we can do against Hillary, we are in deep trouble.

As far as turning NYC into a sanctuary city, I don't like that either, and I am as pro-wall, anti illegal as most folks here, but I don think that a mayor's responsibility to deal with real world issues is different that a governor or a President's. I mean, NYC is not, say Palo Alto where they become sanctuary city's just for political aggrandizement. I'm always amazed that NYC works at all, I was there during his admin and his effectiveness was amazing.

Better check Rasmussen again, Spiff. Fred is within the margin of error with Rudy. This isn't from a blog, per se, and although it's from a Fred08 press release, they are referring to Rasmussen's weekly rather than the daily that I think you're referencing. I feel justified posting this, since it shows that the more the public learns about Rudy Giuliani, the less they like (especially likely GOP voters).

Realizes that the threat of Islamo Fascism is the over riding issue facing us.

Doesn't suggest we call lawyers before we deal with a security threat.

Understands that we need to support and increase military readiness.

Refuses to pander to conservative base about his abortion stand. I don't like it either, but remember that Bush 41 was pro-life and we got Souter. Rudy is on record supporting judges like Scalia, Thomas, Roberts and Alito. He worked with some of them at Justice, and I believe him when he says they are the constructionist model he'll look for.

He is in favor of building the wall and legal immigration only.

Understands that lower taxes keep us prosperous, and therefore keep us free.

Realizes that "single payer" health care would be a disaster.

The margin of sampling error is +/- 4 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence, which puts Rudy and Fred in a statistical tie.

My take:

The poll roughly reflects events over the past couple of weeks. With two good debate performances, Fred has held his own, despite continuous negative media spin. His campaign’s efforts to define Rudy and Mitt as less than conservative are beginning to pay off.

John and Mike are profiting at the expense of Mitt and Rudy. Good performances in the two most Recent debates and well-received speeches at the Value Voters Summit have also helped both candidates.
