Berkowitz Leads Young in Alaska
Political Wire ^ | October 15, 2007

A new poll of Alaska voters finds that Alaskans, weary from the scandal-plagued Rep. Don Young (R-AK), support challenger Ethan Berkowitz (D) by a 51% to 45.5% split. This marks the first time the challenger has held a lead over Young this cycle.

Perhaps of even more concern for Young, the poll found 34% are strong Berkowitz supporters -- unlikely to change their decision -- while only 19% of those polled called themselves strong supporters of Young. Berkowitz was the 2006 Democratic nominee for Lt. Governor.

CQ: "Young has rarely faced serious competition since the 1973 election he won to succeed Democratic Rep. Nick Begich, who was presumed dead after the plane transporting him to a campaign event disappeared. But Young has been under scrutiny for his connections to Veco Corp., an Alaska-based oil industry services company, which is at the center of a state political scandal that also has raised questions for Republican Ted Stevens, Alaska’s long-serving senior senator who also is up for election in 2008."

Looks like Don Young’s schtick has gotten very old for Alaska’s populace. Hopefully, this will persuade him to retire.

Dang, I thought David Berkowitz had opened up an orphanage.

The VECO scandal is wrecking the Republican party in Alaska except for the Gov. She’s new and has taken a strong anti corruption stand. New pols are trotted into court every week (some Dems but mostly Reps) and it’s going to change the political landscape there.

I saw somewhere else that this was done by a Democrat polling firm, paid for either by Berkowitz or the DCCC. It may be meant to look like Young is down, but might not actually be.

Either way, it would be nice to have a scandal-free candidate for this seat.

Sounds like that’s a good thing. Alaksa has a serious libertarian movement, but its Congressional delagation is all RINO Porkers.

It’s by Ivan Moore Research, which I believe is a Democrat firm, so this may be the outlier. But I don’t think it’s bogus.

"Alaksa ...its Congressional delegation is all RINO Porkers."

When 99.9ths of Republicans are RINOs, then they are what the Party is. Fat, Pork, Taxes with support, somewhat, for the military but more really for the Defense contractors.

I was thinking something along the same lines. Perhaps they could have a play on the "Son of Sam" title. Speaking of whom, have you seen this?

Most voters there are non-political and thus vote for familiar names.

Most people who claim to be fiscal conservatives complain about pork in other states, but not in their own communities.

Since the poll is a Dem one, we must subtract 5 points from the Dem candidate to get the true result. Young’s corruption has made the race into a tossup. Young will stay in the House for as long as he can to use his position to remove any incriminating evidence against him. Young needs to be knocked out.
