Train explodes, derails in Painesville [that would be in Ohio]

A train derailed near the Lubrizol Corp. plant in Painesville after striking a gas line shortly after noon today, according to authorities.

Several of the cars that derailed are on fire, with flames shooting 20 to 30 feet in the air. Three of the cars that derailed were not burning.

Several area fire departments and the local hazardous-materials management team have responded to the blaze and can be seen fighting the fire, which is pouring thick, black smoke into the air toward the southeast. Smoke is visible several miles away. Flames have been reported to be visible at least a quarter of a mile away.

Painesville Fire Capt. Ken Takacs said no one has been hurt.

Local authorities organized an evacuation 1.25 miles around the epicenter, including of Lathrop Elementary. Students from Lathrop were evacuated to Chestnut Elementary as a precautionary measure, Painesville schools spokeswoman Chris Hanahan said.

Parts of Ohio Rt. 2 and Rt. 44 are closed due to the smoke and fumes. Local TV says that a Propane tanker is also in danger of exploding (about 100 yards away from the fire.

From the little glimpse I saw a few hours ago on my mother’s tv It looked like a tank farm was located nearby.

The train's driver probably wasn't looking where he was going.

It is a very old city and the county seat a poor neighbor to the growing monster of the city of Mentor.

This train wreck is a passing blip among its problems.

Thought I’d let you know I added the keyword Ohio as a reference for the use of the search function and anyone wanting to search for Ohio threads.

Glad it appears no one was hurt and I hope the propane tank doesn’t end up exploding too.

it looked like a tank farm was located nearby.

The tank farm is the Lubrizol plant they make industrial lubricant additives.

If the fire spread to that plant things would be very bad.

But the Lubizol company’s fire brigad is better equipped than most of the local fire departments.

Northeast Ohio all over the breaking news threads today. Local news is probably going nuts. They were all out at the Chrysler plant, then the train derails, then the school shooting (I think I got it right chronologically).

Not that I have ever seen.

Being an early report my guess is that there is some confusion and the train struck the gas line next to the tracks after derailing.

Now how on earth could a train hit a gas line??? That's not what happened, at least not directly. I suspect a collision based on the way the cars are scattered about. Unfortunately, the local news channels are all over the school shooting in Cleveland so the facts on the derailment/fire are not coming out.

I hope so. The article made it sound like hitting the gas line was the cause of the derailment, and I just can’t picture a set-up under which that would be possible.

Considering the danger posed by the fire my guess is all they have to go on is a report from the train engineer.

No one not even the fire department personel are going to get close enough to look for causes until the fire is out.

I agree.

That is a very straight run of track that the accident happened on.

Other places a train going too fast might sway too far and collide with something close to the tracks but not there.
