(CNN) -- A sheriff's deputy who killed six young people at a house party in Crandon, Wisconsin, apparently died after shooting himself three times in the head with a .40-caliber pistol, the state attorney general said.

On the flip side - I find it despicable that violent offenders are let off on technicalities and go out and murder again.
Essentially, the people releasing him are sentencing his future innocent victims to the death penalty.
One of two possibilities: poor shot, or the quickest reflexes of all time.

I’ve seen this a couple times, hesitation shots. Same with knives. A few superficial wounds, then they get the courage to do the deed.
The one lady with the knife I remember, she had about 4 hesitation cuts around her heart before she pushed the knife through, almost to the other side.
I heard that he was killed by a SWAT sniper.
Was up visiting family in Crandon a few weeks ago, and I must agree with you.
Incorrectly reported at first. The fatal shot was from a handgun............

In addition to my rifle, I will be taking my .40 Walther P99 for close-in work. I was advised by more experienced hunters that unless I hit the skull straight on, the .40 bullet may simply bonk off the pig's skull, making him mad at me.
So I asked another hunter, "What do you think about hunting a pig using a .40 S&W round?".
His answer was "Don't."

He came into ICU still alive. For the third shot, he tried a different firing method, that reduced the twist & flinch that caused the first two to ‘just’ give peripheral wounds. Third was a gut shot, that had been intended for the chest. It was a bolt action, and he had to get up out of his easy chair TWICE to reload & reset.
That was about 15-20 years ago, so I don’t remember for certain if he survived or not; but I don’t believe he did.
Gotta love motivated, dedicated, ‘can-do’ people, who practice, and keep trying, until they get it right!

Yeah, lady I went on had two. I googled suicide investigation, I see it’s not unusual at all, maybe a hesitation shot or two, even involuntary shots near or after death.
