A Mormon in the Oval Office?
Washington Post ^ | October 4, 2007 | Robert Novak

Posted on 10/04/2007 9:40:06 AM PDT by greyfoxx39

When Mitt Romney appeared last week (via closed circuit from California) before the Council of Retired Chief Executives meeting in Washington, he faced kindred souls: rich Republicans who had managed big enterprises. Yet the second question from the audience was whether Romney's Mormon faith was hurting his quest for the Republican presidential nomination. He replied that about the only people who brought up his religion were members of the media, an answer that simply is untrue.

Romney is asked about Mormonism wherever he goes. In my travels, I find his religious preference cited everywhere as the source of opposition to his candidacy. His response to the former chief executives that only reporters care about this issue sounded like a politician's tired evasion. Romney was either too obtuse to appreciate his problem or was stalling because he had not determined how to deal with it. Contact with his advisers indicates that it's the latter.

Quotes grabbed tend to be relevant to the ideas being bandied about.

Do you really think that what is being discussed is relevant? Do you really think that the sun, moon and stars on the Salt Lake Temple make the Mormons members of the occult? Hmm, while we are at it, what about the 6 spires? Surely there should only be one. I wonder what deep dark meaning we can read into the extra spires.

Does anything that has been discussed about Mormon beliefs have any relevance to the political debate? No. There are some Mormon beliefs that are relevant though, but you would agree with all of those, anti abortion, stable families (lets repeat "stable families" because it is probably the true core belief of Mormons) self sufficiency, honesty, etc. etc. but those are boring aren't they?

FC:I do believe in the Bible, but I don’t see any dates in Genesis. I also believe God is rational, so facts are what they are. I believe you are an atheist though, are you not?

LG:Yes I am an atheist, primarily because I try not to believe in fairy tales. So I guess we need to narrow your beliefs down. Do you believe the Bible is the literal word of God or is it shall we say “parables”? Maybe if you told me your religion it would speed this process up.

Atheism is its own religion (the worship of the null set God). It has it’s own illogic and fairy tales. I am constrained for time, but can go into that later, but it’s pretty easy to show denying the existence of higher orders of thought is illogical.

As far as whether the Bible is the literal word of God or a parable, I take the odd view that the two are not mutually exclusive. What is the point of the Bible if not to teach morality within the context of the mindset and times of the humans who read it? A better question is whether the Bible serves its purpose, and to that I answer yes.

FC:Neither, he was ordained in secret to be king of an upcoming kingdom.

LE:Was that a kingdom of this world?

Well, typical of Joseph Smith’s narcissist mix of sorcery, fraud, charlatanism and grandiose political visions, the Kingdom was both physical and metaphysical. Just like a Jim Jones, a David Koresh, a Reverend Moon or an L Ron Hubbard I suspect Smith believed his own crapola. Therefore it’s likely he believed he was being set up to be King of an earthly/metaphysical Kingdom that would arise as the fulfillment of Jesus’ return to Earth.

FC:You are so right, argung against Mormon apologists is insanity.

LE:Then why do you do it?

I’ve just seen too many people hurt by Mormonism to believe a Mormon president would be anything but a disaster. Therefore I struggle on, despite my own rule never to argue against crazy people.

Besides, I’ve looked into my seer stones and read the golden tablets that are hidden behind the Lady Luck Casino in Vegas and they tell me I’m doing the right thing.

“Does anything that has been discussed about Mormon beliefs have any relevance to the political debate? No.”

Oh come now. The belief that Romney will become a God speaks directly to his mental stability. So your blanket statement immediately collapses.

Just curious...what about this? Different instructions from different admin mods? Or does this not apply to everyone equally? Is there an "exception" list we should be aware of?

I certainly do believe in Evolution are far as it goes. It doesn't have all the answers, but it certainly has some.

And you believe that you will spend eternity bowing down and worshiping a God, or at least singing in his choir. That is a distinction without a difference FastCoyote.

A little off topic. I watched two coyotes catching mice just behind my house this morning : ) In the winter I have watched coyotes pouncing through about a foot of snow and grabbing mice. We clocked one coyote and he got 13 mice in about 8 minutes.

I also believe God is rational, so facts are what they are.

Do you believe in Noah's ark and Joshua stopping the Sun and the Moon? You have also once again failed to state your religion, are you ashamed of it?

Atheism is its own religion (the worship of the null set God). It has it’s own illogic and fairy tales. I am constrained for time, but can go into that later, but it’s pretty easy to show denying the existence of higher orders of thought is illogical.

Two straw-men there, but lets tackle the last one. Who says that atheists deny higher orders of thought. That certainly isn't true.

So you are free to interpret the Bible anyway you see fit? I will agree, that makes sense. I do too : )

I’ve just seen too many people hurt by Mormonism to believe a Mormon president would be anything but a disaster. Therefore I struggle on, despite my own rule never to argue against crazy people.

So because Mormons believe that they can become "One With God" (that is the summation of the Temple ceremony by the way) that makes them an evil and despicable cult. Does that sum up your beliefs about Mormons?

While you on the other hand believe that you can be a choir boy for all eternity and that makes you pure and clean. Does that about sum up your personal beliefs?

I will agree with you, Mormon beliefs are illogical, but so are yours. Didn't Christ say something about a beam in an eye?

So you don't believe that species evolve? Ahh, you must think that the earth is 6000 years old and God placed everything in its perfect place and then man messed it all up. Does that sum up your beliefs?

You put words into my mouth on every post, it is quite distracting from logical discourse.

Believing you become God is an act of ego, believing you are subject to God is an act of humlity. Two very different psychologies.

I am simply trying to understand where you are coming from. You have refused to state what you believe other than a nebulous I believe that the God of the Bible is rational. Do you have a religious preference?

Believing you become God is an act of ego, believing you are subject to God is an act of humlity. Two very different psychologies.

Don't you see the similarity of both of those views. They both presuppose the existence of GOD. If you don't have any evidence of the existence of GOD it is irrational to believe in it. I assert that you are irrational, the same as any other believer, whether it is Dobson or Romney or Huckabee.

We do need a third party, there's no doubt of that. However, we need a third party that can actually BEAT the GOP and especially the dem party. Until that's feasible...I'll vote for the Republican Nominee...to KEEP the commie party out of the WH...anything else is either very naive or just plain STUPID.

A third party should've been started yrs and yrs ago to have any affect today. There's NOT one...if a third party was on the ground today, it'd take at least 8-10 yrs to have any chance whatsoever of winning a presidency.

If you truly want to change the direction of this country you start in the House of Representatives...fill the house full of true conservatives...then a true turn to the right would begin.

Of all the reasons to oppose and fear the nomination of Willard, on my list, religion doesn’t even enter into it.

To each their own, of course.
