Google ignored Memorial Day and Veterans Day, but today they have a special logo up to commemorate an event that must be near to their heartsthe 50th anniversary of the Soviet Unions launch of the Sputnik satellite.

I’m not sure what you’re objecting to here. Sputnik was a big deal for the human race, not just the USSR. Fifty years of space exploration is worthy of celebration.
Those of us in the space industry would agree.
Sputnik is important to the history of technology. It inspired us to invent things that lead to... well Google when you get down to it. Sure maybe they shouldn’t have ignored Memorial Day and Veterans Day, but the 50th anniversary of Sputnik is worthy.
facts and evidence only confuse them ....
they are much happier making false accusations ....
Saw the movie AND read Rocket Boys. Good stuff. Hickam went to the university where I work ad even helped conceive and build the cannon for the corps of cadets.
Thanks for posting that, you just lowered my blood pressure a good many notches.
It would be easier to stomach if they didn't have such disdain for the United States, you are correct.
The irony is that the US could have been in space first.
Von Braun in his later years recounted how he had been pushing for a satellite launch in the early ‘50s, and figured that the US could have pulled it off as early as 1955 - even then, they were so much further ahead of the USSR technologically.
The problem was short-sighted government and military leaders, who simply could appreciate the potential of a new technology. As a result, the US constantly played catch-up to the USSR in the early years of the Space Race.
err, make that “could NOT appreciate” ...
I agree. Sputnik was a great achievement and it’s launch should be a celebration for the whole human race. I just don’t like Google picking and choosing from equally worthy achievements.
I agree that this is a silly thing to get upset over. LetS not forget that Google’s founder, Sergey Brin, was born in Moscow and lived there until he was 6.
Google co-founder, Sergey Brin, is from Russia.
There is a hurricane in the picture of earth, ostensibly a “globull warming” reference.
I noticed that too. Although it looks more like the Pacific so it'd be a Typhoon or in the Indian ocean it'd be a cyclone.
If the first satellite was launched by the Third Reich you think they'd do it?
Why does anyone use google?
www.ask.com is so much better. Dogpile is good too.
Excellent graphics & true!
It isn’t a single occurance. It is a pattern of behavior.
They can do as they wish and we can criticize them for it as we see fit too.
