Flag of Mexico Flown Illegally Over Reno Business
Channel 4 KRNV ^ | 10/2/2007 | Greg Knight

Posted on 10/02/2007 2:27:32 PM PDT by Altura Ct.

This afternoon we received a call from a viewer who said a business near downtown Reno was flying a Mexican flag above an American flag... which is in fact illegal.

This, after photos and comments about the flag were posted on Craigslist this morning. When we were able to have a photographer go and check everything out we found the story to be true.

It also didn t take long before the situation provoked a strong reaction. We are now going to show you , unedited, what happened. Click on the video to see what happened.

Very well said.

Thanks for your service and continuing to defend this country. I wish there were more who would stand up to defend her against this invasion.

Texas now has some businesses that accept pesos. Many local commercials from the big city have someone speaking with a mexican accent. In this year alone one city has had 15,000 car burglaries. That doesn’t count home and other burglaries. For instance if you’re brave enough to go to one of their malls someone may drive up as you’re leaving to ask for directions and then point a gun in your face and take your purse.

There’s at least one or two shootings every day.

It’s going downhill fast, and our government just fiddles and twiddles their thumbs. I guess it IS up to citizens like this brave man to take matters into his own hands.

Gonzales, the "Lexington of Texas," marked the beginning of hostilities with Mexico on Oct. 2, 1835. A celebration was held last Oct. 2 in observance of the 100th anniversary of the battle but the formal exposition was withheld until the period from Nov. 5 to 10.

The Battle of Gonzales, resulted from a demand of the commander of Bexar for the return of a small cannon left in Gonzales some years previous with members of the DeWitt colony for their protection against Indians. There were 13 men in the settlement able to bear arms and these decided to resist the demand. The cannon was buried. All boats were removed to the Gonzales side of the Guadalupe River and breastworks were thrown up. The Gonzales men obtained aid from colonists along the Colorado River, and on Oct. 2, 1835, when the Mexican forces demanded surrender of the cannon, John H. Moore, who had been elected colonel and leader of the Texans, brought the cannon from its hiding place.

Attached to the cannon was the Gonzales flag. It is described by historians as about six feet in length. On it was painted the cannon barrel. Above the cannon was the Lone Star while underneath the cannon was painted the words, "Come and Take it."The cannon was hauled across the river and the Texans began to fire on the Mexicans who proposed a parly which was rejected. The Mexicans withdrew toward San Antonio. Thus was the first battle for Independence fought in the struggle that was to continue until the next year when the Texans finally routed the Mexicans at San Jacinto.

I don't know about the law, but common courtesy demands that if you fly the flag of a foreign country, you fly the host country's flag alongside it (NOT underneath it). If the situation were reversed, can we doubt that the Mexican people would react strongly?

Don't remind me that embassies and the like generally fly their own country's flag only; they are privileged by accepted usage.

So the Vet in question had a liability of five bucks, the actual 'loss' of the flag, the owner would have to demonstrate that they received zero compensation from that loss (an impossible thing to prove, but I guarantee that there are those in Reno right now who are going to his business because of the publicity of the news story), so his actual 'losses' are zero.

The Vet, by saying they would have to fight him to get the flag back, while waving his knife at the camera, might have left himself open to prosecution for threatening with a deadly weapon. I guess he doesn't care

"If this is a private business they should be able to fly flags anyway they want. If people don’t like it they can organize a boycott of the business.

Taking down the flags is vandalism.

Long live free speech!!!"

Pretty dumb thing to say considering what you have in your profile. Personally I think you come off like a Moveon or KOS freak.

Here is what YOU put on your profile page.

FWIW Travis, all due respect, I think we both are confused.

I don't know who WF Johnstone is?

And I mixed up William W. Johnstone with Terry C. Johnstone (I have read many Westerns by Terry Johnstone ...excellent!)

However, I stand by the one book I've read by this William W. Johnstone....Remember the Alamo..

And BTW, William W. Johnstone and Terry C. Johnstone are deceased.

Lorianne, I'm sure you're a nice person, but you have been schooled utterly and completely. Kids today use the term "owned". Well, you heve been owned.

It is best to attribute this whole thing to "a learning experience" and admit your error. FReepers are forgiving in the long term.

As an aside, I suddenly have a desire to rock out to some old ZZ Top, and I don't know why.

La Grange, anyone?

In fact, a Mexican embassy inside the USA is legally part of Mexico’s territory, so flying its own flag there is OK. A restaurant or bar in the USA is not Mexican territory, although some have tried to act as if it were.

Freedom to speak does not grant you freedom from consequences for your speech.... Business owner had his say, the Vet has his.

Let the owner try to prosecute him for vandalism and theft.... Somehow I doubt the coward will. And if he does, good luck finding a jury who’s going to convict.

I agree with that. The question is, how far do people condone it going? Vandalism? Assualt? Lynching?

Take the Jenna 6 situation. Was that an acceptable form of counter speech?

Free speech counters free speech. Vandalism is not free speech and I don't think it's protected as such under 1A

You might be right that he won't prosecute. However, if he did, I doubt this case would go to a jury.

Oh it would.. Any magistrate decision is instantly appealable, and when you are the defendent you get to decide if you want your trial to be a jury trial or a bench trial.

Jury Nullification is a valid part of the US justice system, and no sane jury would convict this guy for his actions. Flying the US flag under a foreign national flag is a signal of subjugation and agression.

I wonder who's side people would be on if the owner shot the vet for stealing private property? (No, seriously, it's an interesting question considering all the replies in other threads.)

It might be considered the 'shot heard around America.' What a rallying cry for those who believe in the sovereignty of the United States.
