US Democratic White House hopeful Barack Obama on Tuesday called for the elimination of all the world's nuclear weapons, and pledged to thrash out agreements, face-to-face with sworn US foes.
Obama marked the fifth anniversary of a speech he gave opposing the Iraq war, to launch his latest bid to chase down Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton, reigniting their simmering row on foreign policy.
With first party nominating contests only three months away, the Illinois Senator has scheduled a string of foreign policy addresses, apparently intended to deflect Clinton campaign claims he is too inexperienced to be president.
"We need to change our nuclear policy and our posture, which is still focused on deterring the Soviet Union -- a country that doesn't exist," Obama said, in remarks released by his campaign.
"India and Pakistan and North Korea have joined the club of nuclear-armed nations, and Iran is knocking on the door. More nuclear weapons and more nuclear-armed nations mean more danger to us all.
"Here's what I'll say as president: America seeks a world in which there are no nuclear weapons."
Obama stressed he would not direct unilateral nuclear disarmament, and would back a strong US deterrent while nuclear weapons existed.
"We'll be in a better position to lead," he said, adding that under his presidency, the United States would adhere to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
"It's time to stop giving countries like Iran and North Korea an excuse. It's time for America to lead."
Obama also promised a "new era" of American diplomacy, and pledged to be a president willing to talk to all nations friend or foe.
"I'm not afraid that America will lose a propaganda battle with a petty tyrant -- we need to go before the world and win those battles.
In July, Clinton branded Obama "irresponsible" and "naive" after he said at a campaign debate he would be willing to meet leaders of Iran, Cuba, North Korea, Venezuela and Syria as president.
In response, Obama mocked Clinton as "Bush-Cheney Lite" claiming she shared the views of the current White House, which sees talks with US enemies as a reward for bad behavior.
Obama, though not in the Senate at the time opposed the Iraq war, while Clinton voted in 2002 to authorize it, though now is a fierce critic of US Iraq strategy.
He has been trying to make the argument that Clinton's vote raises doubts about her judgement on foreign policy issues.
Too many Obama threads, especially about the trivia that rolls off his tongue every day. Art Bell is way smarter than this politician and sounds better.
Yuh, right. I’d like to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony, too, but it ain’t gonna happen.
Apparently, Ears hasn’t considered the scenario where our enemies simply say, “No.”
With rainbows & unicorns for all!!!
Sure he has.
"To show the world that we are serious about this, we will be the first country to eliminate all of our nuclear weapons!"
The population of China is over 1.3 billion. We have 300 million.
And he wants to do what?
Not ready for Prime Time.
Or say "Yes" with their fingers crossed.
Obama sounds more and more like a Miss America contestant, doesn’t he?
“I want world peace, a cure for all diseases, and good things for the rain forest.” Obama did’t say these exact words, but he might as well have.
Oh this is rich. I can see it now -
Obama: "Mr Terrorist, I pledge to you that I will provide US recognition for your cause, in return for your pledge not to kill mor....."
Arab Terrorist Leader: "DEATH TO AMERICAN INFDELS! ALLAH AKBAR" (Stab)
It surely would shorten negotiations. And, enable the secret service to eliminate a few terrorist leaders, to boot.
Note to self, make sure Obama has a really, really good VP, before voting for him.
When nuclear weapons are outlawed only outlaws will have nuclear weapons.
SPITBALLS!?
Obama will create this by “cozying up” to all of the world’s dictators and then using all of the world’s nukes while invading Pakistan!
handler's, bring out the handler's!!
“Here’s what I’ll say as president: America seeks a world in which there are no nuclear weapons.”
And I guess he also forgot no guns along with it. Boy, is Obama trying to capture the Kucinich vote? Well, he might as well propose for the replacement of the Department of Defense with the Department of Peace, then Obama will get all of Kucinich’s supporters.
The only reason why we still need to keep Nuclear weapons is because what if North Korea or Iran gets Nukes? Besides, eliminating Nuclear weapons is no good because there are still people who can put together a Nuclear bomb. The only way to truly eliminate Nuclear weapons is to eliminate all knowledge of how to put together one and to eliminate the materials. Unfortunately to Peaceniks, this is entirely impossible because you would have to eliminate the Internet and every single Scientist (or anyone else with Knowledge) in the world. You might as well eliminate the human race to order to ensure a world with no nukes.
Sure, Ronald Reagan once proposed eliminating all the Nukes during a meeting with the Soviets, but he later knew that was a bit foolish. Still, Reagan was able to achieve something more realistic, arms reduction.
I don’t know who is more dangerous: Barrack Hussein Obama, Hillary Rodham Clinton, or John Edwards?
" Last year I went to Iraq. Before Team America showed up, it was a happy place. They had flowery meadows and rainbow skies, and rivers made of chocolate, where the children danced and laughed and played with gumdrop smiles."
I know, I know, can't we all just get along?
“Here’s what I’ll say as president: America seeks a world in which there are no nuclear weapons.”
At least Republicans and Conservative groups have great material to use should he be the Presidential or Vice Presidential candidate.
