Tutankhamun was not black: Egypt antiquities chief
AFP ^ | September 25, 2007

Egyptian antiquities supremo Zahi Hawass insisted Tuesday that Tutankhamun was not black despite calls by US black activists to recognise the boy king's dark skin colour.

"Tutankhamun was not black, and the portrayal of ancient Egyptian civilisation as black has no element of truth to it," Hawass told reporters.

"Egyptians are not Arabs and are not Africans despite the fact that Egypt is in Africa," he said, quoted by the official MENA news agency.

Hawass said he was responding to several demonstrations in Philadelphia after a lecture he gave there on September 6 where he defended his theory.

Protestors also claimed images of King Tut were altered to show him with lighter skin at the "Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs" exhibit which leaves Philadelphia for London on September 30.

The exhibition sparked an uproar when it kicked off in Los Angeles in June 2005 when black activists demanded that a bust of the boy king be removed because the statue portrays him as white.

The face of the legendary pharaoh, who died around 3,300 years ago at the age of just 19, was reconstructed in 2005 through images collected through CAT scans of his mummy.

The boy king's intact tomb caused an international sensation when it was discovered by Briton Howard Carter in 1922 near Luxor in southern Egypt.

"Perhaps these people are related to the Tarim Basin European like mummies or the so-called White Huns. They certainly look more like Lithuanians than Asians."

A connection between Europe and Asia was establish centuries before ATG. The Tarim Mummies aside from having caucasian features also were buried in traditions that were a typical to European cultures. The Yingpan Man had a gold foil death mask that was very similar to the Greek tradition found in the Agamemnon Golden Death Mask, while a female mummy was buried wearing traditional clothing worn by the Celtic tribes.

You brought up some interesting points regarding the Kushite Dynasty and the Caucasoid Berbers. :)

I’m sure that as we speak, type and read the REV-err-Und Jes-see Jack—son and Fat Al (Sharpton not Gore) are on planes bound for AFP’s offices in Paris to protest.

Fat Al will have his megaphone while the REV-err-und Jes-see Jack—son looks mortified at AFP’s claims.

Perhaps the ACLU can file suit as an ami of the court.

Major museums in the US with world class Egyptology collections, the Brooklyn Museum, for example, have polluted their exhibitions and magnificent collections with their “Ancient Egyptians were Black” rhetoric and distortions.

Politicizing art is a dangerous thing. Using art to further a racially divisive agenda is despicable.

Modern day Egyptians, who are a Semitic people who speak Arabic, are not the same people who inhabited Egypt under the Pharoahs. They are not even remotely related.

Not only is athe darkened skin a result of the mummification process, but color was symbolic in Ancient Egypt, as it is in the Christian worl. The “Black Madonna” Icon, is not that of a woman of color, the color is symbolic of her suffering.

Actually, Tiger invented a word to describe his ethnicity, “Cabalasian,” as sort of a joke meaning caucasian, black, american indian, and asian.

He really looks Thai more than anything.

Do you remember that Olympic swimmer from a couple of Olympics back who was one-quarter black? Every TV journalist would start the interview with something like “Do you hope you’ll be a role model in the African-American community?” He was clearly getting sick of it, would glare at the interviewer and say something like “I hope I’m looked on favorably by all American communities.”

The liberal journalists would stammer for a few seconds and then go right back to the “African American” this, that, and the other thing while the athlete looked like he wanted to hit somebody.

They know for certain that Ramses the Great had Red wavy hair.

And as everyone knows, engineering is in Scottish blood. And noone built more than Ramses. Proof the ancient Egyptians were Scots! ;-)

At least it hasn't spread to astronomy yet ("European-American dwarfs" and "African American holes").

Last time I checked, the PC-crowd was back to describing us as "caucasian" or "Anglo," neither one of which describes me, and I am what used to be referred to as "white."

You'll notice that Derek Jeter has spent at least the past 11 years ignoring these sorts of questions. Which probably had something to do with why Gary Sheffield called Jeter a "half a n-gger" after he accused Joe Torre of being a racist earlier this season.

It is fascinating to see Cleopatra portrayed on TV as almost exclusively being Black . . .

Cleo looked like Elizabeth Taylor in her better days, just as Moses looked like Charlton Heston! My wife will be disappointed if not so!

This sad little lizard told me that he was a brontosaurus on his mother’s side.
I did not laugh; people who boast of ancestry often have little else to sustain them.
Humoring them costs nothing and adds to happiness in a world in which happiness is always in short supply.

LAZARUS LONG

I kinda figured I'd see that Lazarus Long quote on this thread ;-)

I thought somebody mentioned a contemporary coin in which Cleopatra looked rather like former NYC mayor Ed Koch but with more hair.

I see this as not much different than those Whites who are always claiming that they were here in America before the American Indians. Idiots come in all colors.

"Modern day Egyptians, who are a Semitic people who speak Arabic, are not the same people who inhabited Egypt under the Pharaohs."

I think I said something close to that, with more complete background as to why that is true.

However, to say, of todays Egyptians that: "They are not even remotely related [to Egyptians of the time of the Pharaohs] is not true."

No matter what conquerors, conquering people or migrating people came to Egypt in between or after the Pharaohs they did not create a genocide or wholesale replacement of the existing people in Egypt of that time who, by all historical accounts, continued to out number their new leaders and the people those leaders brought.

Therefore, some elements in the gene pool of modern Egyptians are continuations of the genes of the Egyptian people from the time of the Pharaohs.

The fact that all Egyptians today speak Arabic does not mean that all the ancestors of all Egyptians came from Arabia, anymore than did all the ancestors of all Americans come from England.

The Egyptians in the time of the Pharaohs were already of "mixed" ancestry, related somewhat to Ethiopians (possibly mostly), somewhat to other North Africans as found then in Morocco, Tunisia, Libya and Algeria as well as having already some component of semitic or proto-semitic cousins of Jews and other "tribes" from Arabia as well as from Mesopotemia.

That ancestry, present in the time of the Pharaohs did not become extinct, genetically, it continued in the later mixing of "Egyptians" with Greeks, Hyksos, Assyrians, Persians, migrants from Carthage, "asians" from Anatolia and Mesopotemia and later "Arabs". (I might have even left some out)

I just saw the exhibit. It was pretty cool.

And yes, he wasn't black. Actually, there was an artifact showing him (as white) trampling a couple of Ethiopians (depicted as very black).

Ethiopia was an adversary of Egypt.

"Tutankhamun was not black, and the portrayal of ancient Egyptian civilisation as black has no element of truth to it,"

I believe, at this point, that the liberal mind-set is impenetrable to facts. "Truth" is not a factor they will ever consider if it goes against their "feelings".

Not Out of Africa: How Afrocentrism Became an Excuse to Teach Myth as History by Mary Lefkowitz

Interesting book about the disservice done to black students who are taught a false history.

Although it is interesting to note that there is not historical account of Cleopatra being exceptionally beautiful until Shakespeare thought it would sell more tickets a millenium and a half later

It is also a sure bet that the Egyptian ruling class was lighter skinned than the subject population. That is a universal trait found in all societies. The rulers select lighter skinned mates for their offspring.

As a rule, ruling classes spend less time out in the sun than the general population. Thus, their skin tends to be lighter colored (no 'tan').
