This is one reason I favor the 10mm.

At Erickson's request, no charges were filed against the dog's owner...The dog survived the shot to the top of its head... ...Erickson said he is now concerned because the hole in his neighbor's fence has not been fixed... the dog owner has another pit bull that he (Erickson) worries could get loose and hurt someone... No good deed goes unpunished.

I have talked to people from Utah who carry their guns while running... they use the gun to kill rattlesnakes.
The weight of the gun also adds to the workout value.

So, where should I aim, if faced with an attacking Pit Bull dog?

Yes, but it's the
owner, not the breed. In theory, if the owner had had a bassett hound this was just as likely to happen. NO DOGGY PROFILING! /s
I am against breed banning absolutely, hands-down, it would be stupid and short-sighted. But the first step toward a solution is defining the problem honestly -- and the truth is that this is a breed mixed/breed problem. A bad owner with a wimpy dog = minor problem for innocent people. A bad owner with a lethal dog = major problem for innocent people.

About 8 years ago a neighbors neglected/abused Rotweiller came into my yard and attacked my Springer Spaniel while it was sitting between 2 little girls, 7 and 8 years old.
That dog never left my yard.
2 rounds of 6.5x55 worked just fine.

Some years ago I was talking to a law student who was interning at the L.A. D.A.’s office. He told me of a case where one South Central gangbanger shot a rival South Central banger several times in the face with a 9MM at fairly close range and the ‘victim’ survived — due to thick bone structure.

If the dog recovers, gets out, and attacks someone else, Erickson will have as much moral guilt as the owner.

"The dog survived the shot to the top of its head. Erickson said the owner initially planned to euthanize the dog because its veterinary bills were expected to be as high as $4,000. But the owner had a change of heart and decided not to put the dog down, he said."
Well Mr. Erickson, I really hope the not pressing charges thing works out for you. I don't think it will.
I'd be willing to bet that very shortly you will be on the receiving end of a suit for vet bills, emotional trauma, etc., etc., etc.
You were put in a c**py position, and theres no way to make it smell better by being nice after the fact.
You should have finished the dog, filed charges, and sued for your medical bills, distress, etc.
No good deed goes unpunished.

dogs have very tough skulls, many known cases of them surviving multiple shots A 9x19mm has more than enough power to penetrate the toughest dog's skull, the bullet must have missed his brain. My grandfather used to slaughter 600 lb steers with a .22 rifle by shooting them between the eyes. They always fell instantly like a ton of bricks after one shot, kicked a few times and that was it.
Even a .44 magnum won't kill an animal instantly unless it hits a vital organ like the brain or heart, but it does seem odd that this dog survived a close range head shot unless it just grazed his skull.

This has to be a joke. There is
NO WAY you will be petting a pit bull one second and then it attacks someone the next second.

He should have filed charges. The owner is obviously a bloody idiot who’d rather spend $4,000 to preserve the life of a proven aggressor insterad of spending $100 or less to fix the fence and make sure it never happens agin.

Pitbulls; the Moslems of the canine world.
No they're not all killers but it's hard to tell the difference until it's too late.

Good for Mr. Erikson - just wish he had shot that dog multiple times.
