About 8 years ago a neighbors neglected/abused Rotweiller came into my yard and attacked my Springer Spaniel while it was sitting between 2 little girls, 7 and 8 years old.
That dog never left my yard.
2 rounds of 6.5x55 worked just fine.

The dog survived the shot to the top of its head. Erickson said the owner initially planned to euthanize the dog because its veterinary bills were expected to be as high as $4,000. But the owner had a change of heart and decided not to put the dog down, he said.I have to wonder if the owner is insane. A sane owner would have finished off the dog.
