ACLU Backs Sen. Larry Craig Senator Accused of Soliciting Sex Has an Unlikely Ally in American Civil Liberties Union
Sept. 17, 2007
The strange case of Idaho Republican Sen. Larry Craig is about to take another interesting turn. Craig is getting support today from what many might consider to be an unlikely ally the American Civil Liberties Union.
Craig was arrested in a men's restroom at the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport in June and pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct last month.
"We believe the sting operation used to apprehend Mr. Craig was unconstitutional. The statute the government is relying upon makes it a crime to use certain offensive words," said Anthony Romero, the executive director of the ACLU.
Police say Craig solicited sex from a police officer by tapping his foot and waving his hand under the stall divider. The arresting officer also says Craig peeked into his stall.
Craig denied at the time and continues to deny that he solicited sex from the officer through his gestures. He contends his actions were misinterpreted and he has adamantly denied that he is gay.
But the ACLU says it doesn't matter whether he solicited sex because that's not a crime.
"It is a crime to have sex in public. It is not a crime to propose or solicit sex in public, whether it's in a bar or in a bathroom," Romero said.

Definitely guilty!
Followed by a reach-around and a kiss on the cheek.
Does anyone remember the wonderful taste the nation had in its’ mouth the years following Algore’s legal battles to win the presidency, and his failure to just shut the hell up and go away?
Every so often the ACLU holds its nose and does something to promote the fiction that it’s not politically partisan. It’s unmitigated BS.
Secondly, I do have to admit that there are some interesting legal aspects to this case.
ACLU and the fags in it will help Craig along the road to fessin’ up before the cameras, LOL Investigate it enough and you might just find out that the fag cop and the “lobby” set him up because he was known to them through prior trysts from this outhouse/bathroom. Outa the closet with you, boy! ACLU is here now to make sure.
The ACLU has the goal of tearing down our traditional culture through the court system.
Fine, yes, Larry Craig is (probably) not guilty of anything punishable,
but as another poster stated, the ACLU is not backing Craig, they are promoting public restroom homosexual activity, which does damage our society.

Hey, the ACLU finally found a Republican they like. All it took was a bathroom stall and a proposition for gay sex. Who knew!
Seriously, I’ve got some qualms with this sting operation myself—I can’t see how tapping your foot and reaching under the stall “for a piece of toilet paper” can possibly be considered criminal behavior. But this really does show the ACLU’s agenda, though, doesn’t it?

The ACLU is the democrats. They want Craig to stay on for the upcoming election to hang Craig around the GOP in a repeat of the last election.
This will have the added benefit for the ACLU of harming the Republicans by dragging this pathetic case out longer and keeping it in the public eye.
You beat me to it. Exactly what I was going to say. Plus, they can point at this case as an example of how non-partisan they are.
Pretty clear this wasn't approved by their national board! (Bwahahahahahahaha)
Good point. Can you imagine the campaign ads if Craig stays and runs for re-election next year? As if his behavior weren’t bad enough and cause political damage, opponents will say how he is in bed with the ACLU!
They certainly waited until it was politically safe to come to his defense. The day the story broke, the back brokers hid in the closet.
When all homosexual activity was criminal, mere solicitation in a bathroom (whether to engage in the act there or in an alley or at home) would be criminal.
Now it is merely a disgusting question you must be prepared to face as you answer the daily call to use the facilities to release biowaste.
