700-year-old tree coffin discovered in Quang Tri

17:43' 04/09/2007 (GMT+7)

VietNamNet Bridge – The Quang Tri Museum has recently received an ancient coffin made from a tree trunk, according to the museum’s director, Mai Truong Manh.

The coffin was discovered on August 28 in Trung Chi village, Dong Luong ward, Dong Ha commune at 1.2 m underground when local residents were digging for the construction of an electricity post.

The coffin is 2.25 m in length, 0.49 m in width and 0.28 m in height with the body and lid skillfully done.

According to experts, burying the dead in tree trunk coffins was a custom of the Malaysian-Polynesian people who used to engage in trade in the Quang Tri area. It was also the tradition of the Mon-Kh’me language speaking group, who lived in the area 700 years ago.

No mention of the occupant.

It seems odd that the coffin is open on the near end.

No mention of the occupant.

I found that odd also.

Maybe they sold the bones to the Chinese for use in food.

Maybe this story was unnecessarily truncated.

” Maybe this story was unnecessarily truncated.”

I agree, the story could have branched out more. When they write a story like that, it tends to leaf a lot of detail out.

I am sure we will get to the root of it, though and find out there was more bark than bite.

Tempting to link it to the tree coffins found in caves in Mae Hong Son Province (far Northwest of Thailand near Burma and only 200 miles from South China). Of course the ancient Sichuan (Shu) had materials, some of which had a Polynesian look. Also worth noting that the Tai language group may have originated it upland river valleys in today’s Northwest Vietnam.

I’ve been mourning wood ever since hitting 50. Maybe I can “resurrect” more often it with a few doses of Quang Tri.
