He was 68, and I thought that he was in good health.

Rep. Paul Gillmor (R-Ohio) passed away suddenly Tuesday night, according to his office. No other details were immediately available. He was 68.
According to an inter-conference email obtained by The Hill, Gillmor did not show up to the office this morning causing his staff to become concerned. When they went to his apartment to check on him, they found that the lawmaker had passed away.
Capitol Police is currently investigating, but sources believe that the 10-term lawmaker may have had a heart attack.

September 5, 2007 - WASHINGTON (AP) - Ohio Rep. Paul Gillmor was found dead in his apartment Wednesday, a Republican leadership aide said. The aide said the body of the 68-year-old Republican was found by staff members who went to his apartment after he failed to show up for work. There was no immediate word on the cause of his death. Gillmor's office did not respond to a reporter's call.
Gillmor, who represented Ohio's 5th District in the Bowling Green area of the state, was first elected to Congress in 1988.
The aide spoke on condition of anonymity pending an official announcement.

He was 68, and I thought that he was in good health. There are plenty of guys who have fatal heart attacks at 48 let alone 68.

He won re-election by 15% last year. It appears to be a safe GOP district. A Democrat will be appointed as placeholder, but one would not think they can hold that seat.

Actually, you don’t appoint replacements. There will be a special election called soon, and the results of that election will fill the seat until next year’s scheduled election.
It’s Senators that can be replaced by appointment.

I don’t believe that Representatives are appointed as Senators are. There must be a special election..........

I was wondering the same. Maybe the House will investigate some of the shady campaign financing going on (Mr. Hsu of Hong-Kong, for example).

A pretty conservative district, despite containing Bowling Green University.
