US comedian Jerry Lewis apologised today for his use of an anti-gay slur during the weekend broadcast of his annual Labor Day Telethon for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
The controversial remark came yesterday in the 18th hour of the live national telecast, when a visibly weary Lewis, 81, was joking on stage, pretending to introduce members of someone's family as he mugged for the camera.
"Oh, your family has come to see you. You remember Bart, your oldest son, Jesse, the illiterate fag ...," Lewis said, as he apparently caught himself and ceased the gag in mid-sentence, turning on his heel away from the camera.
A clip of the incident surfaced on a number of Internet sites today, including TMZ.com, drawing a condemnation from the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD).
"Jerry Lewis' on-air use of this kind of anti-gay slur is simply unacceptable," GLAAD President Neil Giuliano said, adding that the comic's remark "feeds a climate of hatred and intolerance" that could incite anti-gay violence.
GLAAD urged Lewis to apologise for the comment and asked the entertainer to meet with members of the group "to help him understand why these words are so hurtful".
Lewis issued a statement later in the day through organisers of the telethon saying he was sorry "to anyone who was offended".
"I obviously made a bad choice of words. Everyone who knows me understands that I hold no prejudices in this regard," he said.
"The success of the (telethon) and all the good that will come from it shouldn't be lost because of one unfortunate word. I accept responsibility for what I said. There are no excuses. I am sorry."

Another reason the mainstream media/entertainment industry is dying. Men all around the world like jokes that involve insults of groups or individuals. But you can’t do that because somebody is going to get offended and sue or boycott and the execs cave in.
On the other hand in the online media one of the pleasures is really brutal jokes and insults. That would horribly offend some people.

I have a friend who objects to describe them them as “gay” and insists that they be called homosexual. On the other hand, I like the biblical term “sodomite”.

Yeah, except that it wasn't funny. I don't know that it demanded a public apology, but a private apology to the family certainly would not be out of line.
After 18 hours working with little or no sleep, even without the hot lights and the unblinking cameras, I get punchy. And I'm not even half of Jerry's age. I think most people accept that, and this will go away as quickly as it popped up. GLAAD knows better, from a PR perspective, than to pick on an old man, and Jerry doesn't make many public appearances other than on Labor Day Weekend.
When Jerry started doing telethons, the 'faggots' were still in the closet...

I was thinking the same thing. And then there's the Film Actors Guild.
True story: During a 19th century war, in the middle of winter, one general arrives at another's headquarters in the middle to the night. Instead of sleeping on the frozen ground, the general crawls into bed (fully clothed even in his overcoat) and the two spend the whole night fighting for control of the one blanket. To me that is funny. Tomorrow there will be a battle... and these two guys are wrestling over a blanket.
So, I use this story in a book I am writing. I was telling someone about the scene. First thing out of their mouth: "Are they gay?" No, and why is that the first place you go.
But then I noticed that it affected everything I was writing.
We can't allow men to be men - for too many people are too quick to say - are they gay?
The gay agenda co-opts the feelings (friendship is what I am talking about) that man would dare express for another man - in war and in life - and stigmatizes it to advance their perverted agenda.
That's what I hate the most. And I do hate it.

They stole the rainbow, the symbol God put in the heavens to remind Noah and his progeny that God would never again destroy the world by water, and made it their symbol. My little granddaughter and grandson think rainbows are pretty and do not understand why I won't get them a rainbow flag to put in front of the house...
And their perversions and the nicknames for them continue to encroach on all that is good and decent--and what's more it is done as an affront to the rest of us. If that isn't a hate crime, then there is no such thing.
I remain as ignorant of their ways as I can. It keeps me sane. Never again will I tap my foot to the tune I am humming under my breath when I am in the unfortunate situation of using a public restroom to take a dump--something I avoid as much as possible.
Their buzz words and codes seem to form a trap for the unwary 'breeder', and only those who are either one of them or otherwise well versed in the language of perversion will understand, but many who do not realize their actions may be misinterpreted go blithely through life, straight as an arrow and sending signals of which they are unaware.
Now, does this mean we must constantly study the trends of perversion to avoid sending those signals and being misinterpreted? Again, I object.
Put them back in the bloody closet. Free our culture from the bounds of their perversions, perversions which are being used to dictate how the rest of us are to behave.
If they started chewing a particular gum, for instance as a signal, then what? Would the rest of us be forced to quit that flavor/brand in order not to be mistakenly identified by pervert and ordinary person alike as one of the perverts?
It is a sick situation, and it is destroying our culture.
Someday there will be a backlash against the in-your-face excesses of that set, and that will not be pretty for them.
No threat imply I against anyone there, just noting human nature and the nature of cultures which have finally 'had enough'.

I haven't seen the movie, but there's this one film that has been in the press headlines over the past year or so which involves a homosexual "relationship" between cowboys.....This constant effort on the part of the homosexual activists to chip away at symbols of traditional masculinity is an obvious ploy on their part ot 'legitimize' homosexuality, as if saying " if cowboys do it, (perversion) then not only are these iconic symbols of heterosexual masculinity considerably different (less) than what many many have thought , but homosexuality is considerably more 'manly' than many have thought as well"
It's just another effort to hijack the culture and to rewrite it in a queer image, and it burns me up.
Note to homosexuals: Masculinity is not homosexual. If you want to be a man, get psychiatric help to get over your homosexuality. You have a mental disorder; get medical attention, don't try to change the rest of the world to suit your aberrant view of life.
