Immigration Could Add 100M to U.S. by 2060

Immigration Could Add 100M to U.S. by 2060 Written by Randy Hall, CNSNews.com Staff Writer/Editor

If both legal and illegal immigration continues at its current pace, the U.S. population will grow by 1.25 million per year and reach a net total of 468 million by 2060, according to a report issued Thursday by a Washington think tank.

That increase of 167 million people over the next 53 years "is equal to the combined populations of Great Britain, France and Spain," said Steven Camarota, director of research at the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS), during a news conference at the National Press Club.

Using data from the U.S. Census Bureau, Camarota wrote in his report, "100 Million More: Projecting the Impact of Immigration on the U.S. Population, 2007 to 2060," that "about 1.6 million new legal and illegal immigrants settle in the country each year.
About 350,000 immigrants go home, so net immigration is about 1.25 million."

Immigrants who will arrive in the future and their descendants "will account for 105 million, or 63 percent of the increase," a total that by itself "is equal to 13 New York Cities," he said.

"If the United States actually started enforcing its immigration laws and reduced illegal immigration, that would have a very significant impact on future population increases," Camarota said.
However, net immigration "has been increasing to the United States for about five decades."

"While illegal immigration is certainly a very large number, the overwhelming majority of the population increase will come from legal immigration, which is very high," he said.
"Last year, for example, the United States allowed 1.2 million people to settle in the country permanently on a legal basis."

"The central question these projections raise and the American people must answer is what costs and benefits come from having a much larger population and a more densely settled country," he added.

Roy Beck, executive director of Numbers USA, said during a panel discussion on the report that he found the study "thoroughly depressing" and "a devastating prognosis for the country" because of what its data predict about the future quality of life in America.

"Every time an American complains about traffic congestion, infrastructure overload, private schools, loss of natural habitat, the possibility to get out of town and have some spiritual recreation in nature, that is a result of federal policy" on immigration, he said.

- here comes the liberal counterpoint -

However, Ben Wattenberg, senior fellow at the conservative American Enterprise Institute (AEI), responded that despite the findings in the report, he considers the U.S. to be "under-populated" as evidenced by all the "flyover country" he sees when traveling "from sea to shining sea."

The AEI scholar dismissed the phrase "'population explosion,' which we have been told is something to dread.
That is putting into two words something that can be put in one, which is 'growth.' The question is whether or not that growth is harmful."

"In 1790, there were 4 million Americans in our first census.
Today, there are 301 million in the country, a 75-fold increase," he said.
"Now, what happened to that nation, which suffered from the most terrible population explosion?
It became the most prosperous and influential nation in human history - so what's the problem?"

-the problem, Benny, is that a couple of million people 200 hundred years ago, has nothing to do with a 100 million increase in 50 years today-

Wattenberg also said America "is a wonderful place to live, because wonderful people live here," but there is "always some kind of nativist, anti-immigrant feeling."
All immigrant groups "start out being hated," but one or two generations later, "they end up being assimilated into U.S. society."

- Nothing to do with today, benny - -

Today's "hate du jour" is toward Mexicans, even though the largest percentage of Medal of Honor winners are Mexican immigrants, he added.

"I hope you're not suggesting that anybody who's critical of current immigration levels is wearing a white sheet," Camarota replied.

Regarding history, "World War I came along in 1914, as well as restrictive legislation in the 1920s, and immigration was low for about 50 or 60 years," he continued.
"If that's to be our guide, then we need to have low immigration for many years so we can assimilate the immigrants already here."

"Immigration is not the weather.
It is not something outside our control,"

Camarota added. "What the American people have to decide is whether they want to live in the society these projections lead us to."

I agree with you on the Hispanics. Many of them end up being unproductive members of society, which is unacceptable. A study on limiting immigration would need to address this pressing issue.

That says something about how crappy the country is if 10-20 percent of the population at any given time has smuggled themselves out of the country.

It's probably about 30-40% of the adult male population between the ages of 20 and 40.

This kind of irrational, sentimental crap makes be wanna rip my hair out by the roots - it is so idiotic, its criminal. Its not worthy of someone otherwise as intelligent as Dr Wattenberg. He sounds like an emotional pollyanna.

See my post #51. I attended the panel discussion at the National Press Club yesterday. Wattenberg hijacked the panel employing theatrics, emotion, and anecdotes that just infuriated me. Three times he raised the name of Pat Buchanan in association with those who wish to lower our immigration numbers and change our policies. He also linked current immigration to the treatment of the Jews and the Holocaust. He was engaged in a smear job. It is time for him to take a dirt nap. He has lost it.

Not yet. Do not give up without some kind of fight.

It’s either bring in 600 thousand net Americans a year or face population contraction. The native born population here is getting close to aborting and contracepting itself below replacement level, figures show.

But first, we need to send the illegals packing.

With another 100 million, we would be approaching China or India status.

In more ways than one.

The dialogue about limiting immigration is beginning to border on racism, in my observation

Your observation is what it is, but in truth, means nothing.

If "racism" can be defined as a willingness to protect one's nation, one's culture, one's identity, for onesself and future generations, then again, it is what it is.

There are an increasing number of folks who turn a deaf ear to such accusations. Stop throwing them around here - they reveal more about yourself, than about the rest of us.

Worse still, be are importing hordes of uneducated immigrants who may or may not value education as the single best means for their childrens’ success and happiness.

I wish our flood of immigrants were at least educated, literate and ready to work in a corporate work environment. But we are importing low-educated labor. There children are NOT going to do this work. So our current system will require a constant flood of low-educated labor to do “the jobs American’s refuse to do”, while we hope and pray their children assimilate, get educated and contribute to society instead of turning to gangs and crime.

It’s no longer considered proper to say it, but shifting immigration away from Europe has been a major mistake.

It’s one we’re going to pay for dearly. Diversity accomplishes little aside from seeding tension. You see it over and over again. And I’ve seen it aplenty coming from the Latin immigrant communities and Muslim communities as of late. And it will get worse

I think they are wrong....about 200 to 300 million more would be a closer estimate.

I imagine myself in the shoes of a poor child of a Mexican who grew up in America, but didn’t do well in school, maybe failed out. You see all this wealth around you, and things like attractive women going with some succesful guy, and its going to make you angry.

For your parents making 7 dollars an hour and living in America was a dream come true, compared to the life back home. The child can’t see that because they haven’t worked hard days for 1 or 2 dollars an hour, and struggled just to survive.

Its very tempting to join a gang and maybe make big money.. or join anti-establishment movements like marxism to ‘share’ the wealth. Either way it seems to empower our government, the police state or the welfare state.

Compare that to a Chinese immigrant child who scores very high on testing and does well in school. That child is going to be competing against the ‘elites’ own children for the good jobs, like high level government administrator, doctor, lawyer, city engineer, corporate management etc..

Although I argue a productive immigrant family like that can contribute to the state in different ways. To finance and staff the ‘research complex’, and the military aspects of the state.

I live in California. The state is now 55% minority, ie. non-white.

I walked into a Subway sandwich shop today for lunch and the BO (body odor) in the store was revolting. I’m sure they are nice people, but apparently it was against their religion to bathe, because it absolutely reeked. I’ve experienced that occasionally in the San Francisco bay area in retail stores, but I flat can’t handle that where they serve my food.

We had someone like that at work in the office and the poor girl who worked next to him had to bring in a small fan and aim it toward him to blow the stench back his way.

This is just one of the many gems Ted Kennedy has brought us. How do you fight monster BO when the perp can’t bathe because it is against his religion? I thought of telling the owner I won’t be back there again and why, but I just didn’t bother. I’ll find another sandwich shop.

The founders didn’t fight the crown to control Britain, they severed ties. When I eventually retire, I’ll move to a nice intolerant state with a low level of minorities and immigrants and close the door behind me.

The sad thing is, I don’t give a damn your skin color of if you wear a turban but when you reek of rancid, putrid B.O. where they are making your lunch, I’m sorry. It is time fly.

Sure, because non Europeans are 90% of the world population.
Yet the cry of racism is becoming more and more hollow lately.
At least to me,someone who grew up in the Fifties when REAL racism was ubiquitous.

Get ready AMNESTY II is about to start with the Dream Act Amnesty program.

FNC just showed the useful idiot children from Miami going to Wash DC. to push for the Dream Act Amnesty.

It is all a show scam. Those two boys can LEAVE AND RETURN to go to Miami Dade Community College (which has OPEN ENROLEMENT) with a proper student visa.

They can apply for a waiver of exclusion for purposes of going to school.

This is all a scam anecdote story to allow for the Dream Act AMNESTY to turn all minors into anchor babies regardless of citizenship.
