Former Tennessee Senator Fred Dalton Thompson may be announcing his presidential candidacy formally at 4:30 pm EDT today. A reliable source close to Thompson's advisors told HUMAN EVENTS that today would be the actual announcement, not the announcement-of-the-announcement rumored earlier.
Thompson's move may have been accelerated by the August 29 editorial in the Manchester, NH Union Leader that said Thompson's failure to participate in the scheduled September 5 debate would be a snub to New Hampshirites.
Whatever motivated Thompson, the September 5 debate - with him in it - would be much more important than it would otherwise have been.
Sweet!
And why would he want to announce his candidacy via a conference call?
In other news, New York Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton may be announcing her withdrawal from the 2008 Presidential race at 4:30 pm EDT today.
Whatever you do, don’t start tapping your toe!
It’s the announcement of the announcement of the status. One place I worked had weekly status reports. Another place had weekly progress reports, more enthusiasm although similar otherwise.
BWAHAHAH!! I bet Fred heard about that and moved it up just to tick off the FReeper gnats. :p
At some point in the future, I plan to make the following announcement:
“I am running for President.”
Thank you very much for attending this announcement. Are there any questions?
My attitude is based on the political game of cat and mouse being played. I don't care for the games or the "political intrigue." To put it in simple terms...The man knows if he's going to run or not. As my father would say "Either S**T or get off the pot."
Yup! And I got a $1000.00 piece o’ that one comin’! :)

No, he won’t announce today at 4:30 today he will announce the coming announcement next week Jim Geraghty just confirmed with Team Thompson.
This strikes me as semantics though, unless I’m missing something. Announcing that I will be announcing that I am getting in is basically the announcement, minus the fanfair.
Just get in and debate already.

THOMPSON: Which one of you first? I'll debate you all together if you want! I'll debate you with one hand tied behind my back. I'll debate you standing on one foot.
Uh, but not September 5th, I'm, uh, busy...
MANCHESTER UNION LEADER: It's bad enough picking a late date, but when you go around picking a date to avoid our debate. Why, you're nothing but a great big coward!
THOMPSON: You're right -- I am a coward.I haven't any courage at all. I even scare myself. Look at the circles under my eyes
Good Luck to you, sir!
I hope you collect on this one.
Did you just land on planet Earth?
This has been discussed 1000 times. What part of “I need to put together a team in only 6 months or less” do you not understand???
And, no, I won’t attack you or use your newbie-ness for political gain.
I believe Fred’s delay has been because of his contractual commitments to NBC, and the timing of the replays of the most recent season of “Law and Order”. In fact, I think he’s mentioned that before, but folks seem to want to disregard it. It’s not only the impact on him from the “Equal Time” thing, if he were already in, but it would affect all the other actors in those episodes that could not be replayed.
LOL- please see post immediately following yours..
LOL! Sure.
Jim is truly dedicated. :)
I’m sorry to see that it’s the 6th. I’d really like to see him at that debate.
Add me to this ping list please.
Actually my newbiness is by date only. I've been reading FR since May 1998, the day my Dad signed up. As a pre-teen I read posts and threads to my dad while he worked. I occasionally posted his comments for him. After his passing a few months ago I decided it was time to log on myself. My dad's handle was "politicalwit."
