You and me both, sister! I'm only 5'4 and 135 lbs but look like I weigh less because it's more muscle than fat -- an airbag that wouldn't hurt my 6-foot, 180-lb husband could knock me for a loop. To protect myself, I find myself adjusting the carseat back from the steering wheel as far as I can manage it, which may be safer with regard to the airbag, but NOT safer with regard to my feet being able to reach the pedals.

I'm not against airbags, but I am against nanny-state legislators and people who aren't content with just minding their own business but who PRESUME to tell me that they know better what's in my self-interest. If I was a parent, I'd ignore the baby-in-the-backseat laws and make up my own rules. I'd rather pay a fine and have a live baby, than follow the law and risk forgetting the kid in the back seat or causing an accident because of trying to keep an eye on the seat behind me instead of the road in front of me. Screw the nanny state.

I can spare some pity for the parents.

Kids die in pools the same way--distraction and inattention. Pool party, one parent thinks the other has the baby...

Why not just stick one of these on the car seat?

I do the same thing! And I’m only 5’ - 119 lbs.

One of my former coworkers had a petite girlfriend. He told me if I was ever in a situation where a collision was imminent and there was no way to avoid it to cross my arms in front of me. I don’t know if this would help but it seems to make sense.

Lastly, isn’t it amazing how many of us Boomers survived driving in cars without carseats?! Of course, I do think people were better drivers back then and the cars were built like tanks too. My mom had a really cool red Chevy convertible - how I wish I could get that car back now - and we rode in it with (OMG) “no seat belts” or “air bags” of any kind and the speed limit was 75 MPH on the highway back then.

So who put her in the car and walked off?

Excellent question.

No seat belts!! My gawd, that’s almost as bad as the passel of kids and dogs my dad used to haul around in the back of the pickup truck!! Amazingly ... we all survived. No thanks to the Nanny Staters.

It might have been neglect but it wasn’t homicide and these parents don’t deserve to be treated as criminals. I don’t think that punishing them or filing criminal charges against them would serve any purpose whatsoever. They have to live with this for the rest of their lives and nothing could be worse than that. I think some of the people on this forum should be a little less judgmental about this.

I, too, have been hauled around in the back of a pick-up truck and have lived to tell the tale.

These parents could now be at risk for suicide. Because the father had the baby, I’d be watching him very closely.

Nothing would ever be worse than this man’s tormented thoughts. He probably wishes he could go to prison.

Where did this happen again?

Never mind - I see it was in St. Louis.

I wonder if there are any updates on this.

Hope they’re proud of themselves.

You know nothing about these people, and have no right to pretend otherwise. What purpose does it serve, other than to feed envy and self-righteousness? In charity you should assume what you'd expect of yourself, that they're shattered and inconsolable.

Hope you're proud of yourself.

Really? Less judgemental! About the DEATH of a helpless child- I don’t think so!

Neglect that results in DEATH should be punishable. For pity’s sake, if someone neglects a dog in their yard and it dies from starvation THEY are punished! A child is worth less?
If these ‘parents’ had forgotten to feed the baby , and it starved to death, would there be any sympathy for them?
A human being died here!
Death is the deciding factor! Whether through intentional neglect( which I don’t think applies here) or mindless preoccupation-the ‘duh’ factor- a baby is dead-helpless, strapped in a car to cook! I’m sorry for the baby.
There would be SOME punishment if it were a dog- cruelty to animals at least! Why not a cruelty to a child charge?
I’m sorry- ‘whoops’ doesn’t cut it in this case. Almost forgetting your baby in the car isn’t the same as forgetting it long enough for it to die!
If a member of my family had done this, I’d consider them criminally neglectful and I’d want them charged. They SHOULD suffer for the rest of their lives, mentally, but the laws re. neglecting your children should apply too.
“ I’m sorry “ is covering way too much these days. Society judges far too little, IMO.
I’d want charges of some sort if it were a poodle that died in that car. Don’t you think a baby’s life is worth as much?

It might have been neglect but it wasn’t homicide

I think people are arguing a manslaughter case rather than a homicide case. I think this would be the proper legal identification since manslaughter is defined as "the unlawful killing of a human being without malice or premeditation, either express or implied".

I don’t think that punishing them or filing criminal charges against them would serve any purpose whatsoever. They have to live with this for the rest of their lives and nothing could be worse than that.

I would argue the opposite. A case with a mild punishment like a month in a mental facility might serve to help the parents recover and feel justified after paying a moral debt. At least the observation would prevent a suicide during that time.

It would have taken just seconds to take a look in the back and check the baby seat.

After 7 months of being parents, they couldn’t have made this simple act a habit?

There was a similar accident near Syracuse, NY on interstate 81. They’re not sure what happened other than the car crossed the grassy median, flew up into the air and landed immediately in front of a tractor trailer. The car was obliterated and the mother and two girls (her own daughter and her best friend’s daughter) were killed instantly. The scene of the accident was closed for HOURS while they were picking up the pieces.

Suspicion was that she had got distracted somehow. There was also question as to whether the little girls were buckled in. I really don’t recall the final conclusion on it.

I don’t see anyone claiming to be perfect, but it is inconceivable to me having been a mother for so many years, that someone could forget or be careless like that with their own child.

It would take just seconds to have checked the back seat to see if the child was still there or not. They couldn’t have made this a habit in 7 months?

Authorities say the man and woman work at the medical school campus at different times. She contacted her husband and asked him to meet her and park her car; he did so, but thought she had already dropped their child off at the on-campus daycare facility. She had not and thought he would take the child to daycare.

I can actually see this happening. Poor parents.

A young child died here in the greater Cincinnati area yesterday under similar circumstances. The mother, an ass’t principal at a middle school, drove to work parked her car and forgot her child was in the back seat. Several hours went by before someone noticed the child in the car seat and alerted authorities. When EMS arrived the child was dead; yesterday temperatures in the area were in the high 90’s ... with heat indices exceeding 105F. The mother had to be sedated and was taken to a hospital. A real tragedy for all concerned.

I never heard if that particular school was open yesterday. Was it?
