It might have been neglect but it wasn’t homicide and these parents don’t deserve to be treated as criminals. I don’t think that punishing them or filing criminal charges against them would serve any purpose whatsoever. They have to live with this for the rest of their lives and nothing could be worse than that. I think some of the people on this forum should be a little less judgmental about this.

These parents could now be at risk for suicide. Because the father had the baby, I’d be watching him very closely.

Nothing would ever be worse than this man’s tormented thoughts. He probably wishes he could go to prison.

Where did this happen again?

Never mind - I see it was in St. Louis.

I wonder if there are any updates on this.

Really? Less judgemental! About the DEATH of a helpless child- I don’t think so!

Neglect that results in DEATH should be punishable. For pity’s sake, if someone neglects a dog in their yard and it dies from starvation THEY are punished! A child is worth less?
If these ‘parents’ had forgotten to feed the baby , and it starved to death, would there be any sympathy for them?
A human being died here!
Death is the deciding factor! Whether through intentional neglect( which I don’t think applies here) or mindless preoccupation-the ‘duh’ factor- a baby is dead-helpless, strapped in a car to cook! I’m sorry for the baby.
There would be SOME punishment if it were a dog- cruelty to animals at least! Why not a cruelty to a child charge?
I’m sorry- ‘whoops’ doesn’t cut it in this case. Almost forgetting your baby in the car isn’t the same as forgetting it long enough for it to die!
If a member of my family had done this, I’d consider them criminally neglectful and I’d want them charged. They SHOULD suffer for the rest of their lives, mentally, but the laws re. neglecting your children should apply too.
“ I’m sorry “ is covering way too much these days. Society judges far too little, IMO.
I’d want charges of some sort if it were a poodle that died in that car. Don’t you think a baby’s life is worth as much?

It might have been neglect but it wasn’t homicide

I think people are arguing a manslaughter case rather than a homicide case. I think this would be the proper legal identification since manslaughter is defined as "the unlawful killing of a human being without malice or premeditation, either express or implied".

I don’t think that punishing them or filing criminal charges against them would serve any purpose whatsoever. They have to live with this for the rest of their lives and nothing could be worse than that.

I would argue the opposite. A case with a mild punishment like a month in a mental facility might serve to help the parents recover and feel justified after paying a moral debt. At least the observation would prevent a suicide during that time.
