Financial pressures force Snow departure

By TERENCE HUNT, AP White House Correspondent

WASHINGTON - White House press secretary Tony Snow said Friday he'll leave sometime before the end of the Bush presidency because of financial pressures.

He declined to say when he would depart, but that, "I'm going to stay as long as I can."

The 52-year-old Snow, the father of three children, earns $168,000 as an assistant to the president but made considerably more as a conservative pundit and syndicated talk-show host on Fox News Radio. He was named press secretary on April 26, 2006.

The White House has been shaken by the resignations of some of President Bush's closest aides. Political strategist Karl Rove announced Monday that he would leave at the end of the month. Longtime Bush adviser Dan Bartlett left earlier this year and Andrew Card left earlier as Bush's chief of staff.

Bush's term ends on Jan. 20, 2009.

"I will not be able to make it to the end of this administration, just financially," Snow said. "This job has been such a pleasant surprise in how much I like it. I love it."

Snow has been undergoing chemotherapy after doctors discovered a recurrence of colon cancer in March. He said the last of eight scheduled chemotherapy treatments would be on Friday. On Monday he will have a CAT scan to evaluate his progress.

I’ll bet his mortgage and other expenses are the same ones he had when he expected a million plus a year. He probably can’t afford to fulfill the contracts he made before on less than 1/5 of his former income.

Most insurances, even “federal”, have pre-existing condition reservations. Since Tony had cancer, the first time, before he took the job for the White House the pre-existing condition clause may have kicked in.

Thanks, Johnnie, I was poised to jump on that one but you beat me to it. If you need a “second”, I’m here.

I also agree on the anti-illegal/seal our borders sentiment, HOWEVER I, too, am sick of those who continue to pound the issue. Join NumbersUSA and send faxes to your Congresscritters when called to do so, and leave FReepers alone. Jeez.

Medical expenses, even with insurance, can and does bankrupt far too many Americans..... Hope this isn’t the case.....

If Tony goes bankrupt due to medical expenses, when will those of FR call him a bum..that he should have managed his expenses better. You know how some on here have no tolerance for people who fall on hard times.

"The 52-year-old Snow, the father of three children, earns $168,000" Yep - three children eat a lot!!! Hope they make until he leaves.

I believe they are college age children. And while $168,000 sounds like a lot to most of us, in Washington DC, especially if that means maintaining a temporary home in DC along with your permanent residence elsewhere, that is a middle-class wage. Whatever your level of income is, it probably sounds like a lot, too, to someone who makes considerably less.

You’re right. Poor guy. Although, I think if he dyed his hair, he would look much younger. He just probably doesn’t want to mess with any more chemicals right now. God Bless him!

BTW posts aren’t supposed to contain personal attacks. I could address why you ignore that but I’d be banned.

I don’t believe that you could address that, but you might be surprised at how little I am interested in your ill informed opinions.

I’d imagine too that his cancer may have caused him to look closely at his life. He is in a very high stress and very time-consuming job. Perhaps he wants something that will let him see more of his family.

May God Bless Tony Snow for his service to the White House and the country. May Tony grow healthy and wealthy and live a long life.

Thanks Tony!

Yep, and thanks to Tony's boss, many of them can and will lose their homes because Bush killed a medical exemption to his draconian banruptcy "reform" law.

In this country, there is this branch of government called the Legislature, which is responsible for writing laws. Presidents don't write laws.

You are joking, right? So the Bush Administration did not direct Tom DeLay to quash the medical exemption? I guess I was hallucinating.

Sounds like a good reason to me. On what basis are you claiming that Tony Snow lied about this?

Great news, saveliberty. I haven’t been around for a while so I’m late replying. Lunch with a friend going thru tough times today and stand-by jury duty tomorrow. Hope I get selected—it’s always a wonderful experience!
