HERE’S how people who do their RESEARCH vote:

“August 7, 2007

Hunter tops Thompson - misses NFRA endorsement by 2 %

(Ames, Iowa)… The National Federation of Republican Assemblies, who calls themselves the “Republican Wing of the Republican Party,” held a straw poll at its convention in St. Louis last weekend and California Congressman Duncan Hunter exceeded all expectations. Hunter missed receiving the official endorsement of the Assemblies by a couple of percentage points. After seven rounds of voting by the endorsement committee of the organization, Hunter received 64.8 percent of the balloting, less than two percent of the two thirds vote needed. After seven ballots Fred Thompson was the only other candidate considered. Hundreds of conservatives attended the event that attracted six GOP presidential candidates.

After the general Assemblies vote, convention delegates were charged with making a formal endorsement of one candidate. Their rules required that the delegates cast their votes while in session for candidates that they wish to endorse. Only candidates receiving more than 15% of the delegate’s votes in the first round of voting in the second session were considered for endorsement. After that vote, only Hunter and Fred Thompson received more than 15% of the delegate’s votes. After the seventh and final round of voting Hunter had 64.8 percent support, less than two percentage points short of the needed vote. Thompson had 35.2 percent. The assemblies made no endorsement.”

Sure Hunter has done well in some other localized straw polls and I thought he’d do better in Ames based upon the print time he gets here on FR. I was sure there were a few hundred supporters out there waiting to vote for him. I’ve not said otherwise.

Ames is what it is, the biggie of the straw polls and has been for a few cycles. It’s the one that those who participate in do so as a feather in their campaign strategy should they do well. If they falter then there are consequences also. Sorry you don’t comprehend that.

Romney I hope does fizzle out but it will be further along the campaign trail than Hunter I’m afraid.

Actually, it is more significant than blowing off a little steam. The Log Cabin Republicans involved with this:

http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Log_Cabin_Republicans
Log Cabin Republicans campaigned AGAINST Bush in 2004.

Log Cabin (Republicans) need to account for where they got the money to fund the $1M ad campaign against President Bush in 2004 in key battleground states. This is a Federally-regulated organization (IRS and FEC rules apply!), but they have never documented where this money came from.

Have somehow used the ‘conservatives stayed home’ as their defense to hide their counter support to counter campaign. Not all the details are out on that investigation yet; but I look forward to reading them.

The NFRA is a small segment [to which they admit] of the total voting populace who participate in the primaries.... By the way where were they in Ames yesterday? Had a few showed up with some cash they could have carried the day for Hunter, but they didn’t.

Hunter needs a LOT of conservatives to help him if he is to win. Naysaying does nothing to help anyone.

Is keeping Hillary out of the White House our main goal? I hope not, for our country’s sake.

We need to support the STRONGEST CONSERVATIVE BEFORE the PRIMARIES, and the STRONGEST CONSERVATIVE is DUNCAN HUNTER.

If we run a liberal against a liberal, we will end up with a liberal.

Since you don’t have a candidate in the race, by sitting on the sidelines, you are “in practice” a Hillary supporter.
I wasn't aware that Hillary was running for the GOP nomination.
Anyways, like I said, I have my preferences, which would be Fred Thompson or Newt Gingrich... followed by Duncan Hunter.
Sure in a perfect world Hunter would get the nomination.
I had hoped that Hunter would place high in the Straw Poll and said so in another thread the day before the voting began.

But the difference is I can see the handwriting on the wall, and I can accept reality.
I know Hunter is finished, so I look to the future, instead of fighting against reality.
I will not get so dead set on any one candidate like the Hunterites have as to spoil myself for anyone else.

My suggestion is for all the Hunter hold-outs to stop trashing the guys who are still left, even if you're not quite ready to give up on Duncan, because one of them is going to be the nominee, and it's no accident that each candidates chances for winning the nomination is proportional to how much trash the Hunterites talk about them.
Seeing that sort of behavior is precisely why I take the tone that I do.
Seeing it on rampant display here makes me like this place a whole lot less, and lose faith and respect for many of the very people who the GOP is supposed to be able to count on for victory against the Democrats.

Whomever the nominee is, I will be supporting him in the general election over Hillary Clinton, and I will not sabotage him like the Hunterites are doing in the meantime.

It would help to support someone still in the race, instead of trashing all of them.

The IRFA was disbanded several years ago. The Bushbots who took over in 2000 basically ran out all the real conservatives.

That’s why there were 10,000 FEWER people voting this time than last. That’s why we have gone from 5 to 2 GOP seats in Congress. That’s why we can’t get a serious conservative to get Harkin. That’s why we have lost the Governorship for 3 back to back to back elections.

Yet we carried Bush in 2004. Go figure. The moderate establishment types run the place and there isn’t even civil discourse towards real conservatives.

And the biggest problem is that these moderates pose as true conservatives and have all but rebranded what conservatism means and done so with the liberal methodology of using the politics of personal destruction.

I will compare and contrast the candidates, and I don’t require your approval. One “straw poll” in Iowa isn’t the end-all be-all in the race, ISSUES are.

Go back to the sidelines so you can watch and maybe you might learn something.

trash (trsh)

a. Empty words or ideas.
b. Worthless or offensive literary or artistic material.
c. Disparaging, often abusive speech about a person or group.

I think it was the Log Cabin and Main Street Republicans that took over in 1997 thru 1999. Not Bushbots in 2000.

That was the Christian Coalition being sued, big money coming in from Lefty sources and conservatives being labeled racists.

Oh, and special thanks to Jim Nicholson:

RNC Chairman Jim Nicholson insisted there is “a cause for optimism” about GOP relations with minorities. He said their “shared legacy,” dating back to the party’s founding on an anti-slavery platform in 1854, is “a foundation on which to build” better relations.

In addition, the party’s next presidential nominee could help it overcome the legacy of Nixon’s “Southern Strategy” with a more moderate message such as “compassionate conservatism,” a favorite term of Gov. George W. Bush of Texas.

Stepping down from being the VA overload will be the best thing to happen to our hero veterans come October.

Last I heard, there were suppose to be about 40,000 there with about 25,000 votes cast. Less than 15,000 were casted.

Something tells me the Rep party is in shambles. Time for Conservatives to step up to the plate with their own party and leave the RINOs behind.

Duncan Hunter would be the perfect nominee for such a party and that would distinguish him nationally.

This is the problem with you Hunterite/Keyesian sore losers, and that's why I'm here to expose you.

The only thing that you are exposing is your own ignorance. The truth is that you don't know any of us and don't have a clue what motivates us. With every word you type, you expose yourself as being worthless trash whose opinion deserves no respect.

We need a president who is strong on stopping illegal immigration. We need a president who understands that the winner of every major war for the past 160 or so years has been the country with the stronger manufacturing base. We need a president who would see success in four years as people being less dependent on the government. Duncan Hunter is the candidate who best meets those needs. As long as he is in the race, I will support him in order to show support for his positions on those and other issues. The loss in Iowa likely means that he will not be president. I'm very discouraged about that outcome. However, supporting him is still the right thing to do because he is the right man for the job, so I will continue supporting him in spite of my being discouraged.

As far as attacking other candidates, many of us spend very little time attacking other candidates. I have attacked Rudy Giuliani and John McCain a great deal. Both of them are wrong for the presidency in every way. I could see voting for John McCain if necessary. I doubt that I would vote for Rudy Giuliani unless he made major, public reversals of some of the things that he's said. I've criticized Fred Thompson to some extent because he's not the conservative champion that many people are trying to portray. He's made bad votes for which he has no excuse. He's not been a particularly effective leader. His lobbying for a pro-abortion group shows a lack of principle on this issue. In spite of those things, I've also said that he could be a reasonably good president. I wouldn't volunteer for him, but I would likely vote for him. For the most part, I've tried to support Mitt Romney. I've criticized his position on the assault weapons ban, but I also see great potential for his presidency. If Mr. Hunter is either officially out of the race or mathematically eliminated when the primary comes to my state, I will likely volunteer for Mr. Romney's effort here.

Those of us who are supporting Mr. Hunter are doing what we believe to be right. The criticism of other candidates on these threads is generally light. Mostly, we speak our praise for Mr. Hunter and the good that he could do as president. We aren't trying to tear others down. We're trying to build our candidate up.

Unlike us, you are not obsessed with doing anything positive. You are obsessed only with criticism. In spite of your boasting about your self-imagined understanding, you are clearly less intelligent and less astute than almost anyone on these threads. You are trash. I am ashamed to think that you call yourself a Republican.

That's all.

Lol, we are the ones who are always sniping... That is hilarious considering that you are the one who has come on a Duncan Hunter thread gloating about the Iowa Poll results and proclaiming doom and gloom. I would say that we have really been quite nice to you - I am not quite sure what sadistic joy you get out of this, but I hope you are enjoying yourself. Cheers.

Hmmmm. From what I’ve seen, every Fred Thompson thread is immediately invaded by Duncan Hunter supporters who then make personal attacks on him and his supporters. And lets not even start on what they say about Rudy Giuliani. And Duncan Hunter supporters are also the only people who disparage all the viable candidates at once with their quaint “Rudy McRomneyson” label. You see, the difference here is those guys all have a chance of winning. Hunterites are doing nothing put hurting the party and the eventual nominee. From what I’ve seen, their behavior has been even worse than the Ron Paul supporters.

Anyways, I’m not gloating — I don’t have a personal investment in either Romney or Huckabee. I’m just saying I think this straw poll signals that it’s time for the Hunter supporters to start being team players a bit more.
