For the first time, there are solid data to refute a popular theory that life came to the Earth aboard a comet, Rutgers researchers said Monday.
Deteriorated DNA from microbes, frozen for millions of years in the Antarctic ice, shows that organisms could not have survived the bombardment of cosmic radiation during deep space travel from outside the solar system, said Paul Falkowski, a Rutgers biologist and oceanographer.
"It's almost an impossibility for comets to seed other planets with life after they've been in space for millions of years," Falkowski said.
That's because genetic material is severely damaged or destroyed by exposure to so-called "cosmic radiation flux," he said. Falkowski is co-director of the two-year study of frozen glacial microbes, conducted in conjunction with Boston University, and published in the Proceedings of the National

I wonder how much money and years of education it took, to realize that life can’t nakedly withstand deep space?
Yeah but they’ve got this covered by the phrase “Life, as we know it”. This allows them to still speculate that life exists ANYWHERE

Gods, Graves, Glyphs (alpha order)
What difference would it make?
I gotta admire that kind of blind faith.
One of the later Apollo mission took a swab from a piece of equipment that had been left from one of the earliest Apollo missions. It had been exposed to unfiltered sunshine, solar wind, and cosmic rays for about 3 years. It cultured positive for stapholococcus. I have bugs in my nickel plating tank at PH 3.5 that would do just dandy in a hot spring on Mars. Life will find a way.
Their conclusions are inconsistent with the other information in the article. The article states that some of the microbes produced organisms when placed in a liquid medium. A study of microbes from frozen areas cannot confirm or refute theories about whether DNA could travel in comets through space because conditions aren’t comparable. In particular, such a study can tell nothing about whether cosmic radiation could penetrate the icy covering of comets or be reflected by it.
