Ski resort's 'Impeach Bush' vote backfires

'Hundreds' cancel trips, homeowner threatens to move out

Telluride: Some of the ski fans who have patronized Telluride, Colo., now are calling the ritzy resort "the land of radical liberals" and canceling planned vacations there because the town board voted to approve an ordinance calling for the impeachment of President Bush and Vice President Cheney.

One ski club of 175 people already has made plans to go elsewhere, another skier has threatened to sell his home there and another critic predicted the town soon would bow to Mecca.

"It's huge, unbelievable," said Telluride Mayor John Pryor. "Ski groups are canceling for the winter. Hundreds of people are bailing. The (town) website is flooded with people saying they're canceling their vacations here."

The storm of protest followed the town board's recent vote on the impeachment issue, according to a report in the Denver Post.

Has it occurred to anyone that the reservations could be filled by liberals in a show of support?

Except for one thing. Liberals always like to put someone else's money where their mouth is -- seldom their own money.

They're slowly doing the same thing to Durango. I was just through there while visiting my mom in Cortez. The libs have completely changed the whole air of the town. It it so pretentious now that you can't wait to leave. They have also driven up the price of real estate over the last 10-15 years to the point that only the very wealthy can afford to actually purchase property. A couple of years ago the median home price in Durango was $318K.

Telluride was the first to go when the Hollyweird crowd started buying up property there. Local people who work in the hotels, restarants, and stores do not live in Telluride - they can't afford to. They commute from Montrose, Ridgeway, Dolores, etc.

I grew up in that area and I had always hoped some day to move back, maybe when the kids are grown and gone, but seeing what's been done to the area has ruined it for me. There really is no going back.

I had not thought about this concept recently, but looking back, I have been to many places in my life, but if the politics of the owner, or the town shows (liberal or conservative), one visit is all they get.

Politics and business should never mix in public.

Ask me if I ever had Ben and Jerry's. Even once.

Watch for the left wing spin.. “Well, if Bush didn’t need to be impeached, the city council wouldn’t have voted on this and created the economic problem. The blame is on Bush!”

The latte-sipping crowd expects everyone to notice what they do and applaud. There are probably shocked that people have noticed and told them to go to hell.

Well, if I owned a resort that suffered economic damage because a town council, whose job description surely does not include making national political statements on behalf of the city, I would be contacting my lawyer right about now.

I also think I would look into sueing them individually and not just as members of the council because their statements had nothing to do with town business.

Liberals think every one in the world agrees with and they are surprised to discover a lot of people don't. That what happens in communities where nearly every one is a lib.

I’d figure the cost of the litigation you are proposing, and donate that to candidates to unseat them.

Then again, I’m a small business owner, and relatively successful one at that...

They're slowly doing the same thing to Durango.

Durango has always had a liberal under current with a liberal arts college in the middle of it.

I suspect that the baby boomer, $1m retirement home growth in Durango will make way for oil shale worker homes soon, as the boomers will feel the results of the credit bust and impossibility to get an ALT-A mortgage for their McMansions.

Local people who work in the hotels, restarants, and stores do not live in Telluride - they can't afford to. They commute from Montrose, Ridgeway, Dolores, etc.

Montrose struck me as an extension of Humbolt County. Nothing but neo-Hippies about. Dolores is beautiful and remote enough to keep the liberal kooks out that can't deal without easy access back to the metro areas. We'd move their in a heart beat but, our kids are achieving at a tough private school in our locale and it is incomprehensible to break that track.

Try Sun Peaks north of Kamloops. We went a couple of years ago and had great skiing and less crowds than Whistler. Our ski group went back last year and they had great snow.

Lived in Sandy, UT for 4 years back in the late 80’s. Great skiing. I was only 20 min. from Snowbird/Alta. Then, I could go back to the valley and play 18 holes if I wanted.

Apparently, Utah still hasn’t gotten a name for skiing. I’d have thought by now it would have been ‘discovered’.

I think it is a good thing. It is great to ski in a place that is not crowded.

When we were there, lines at the lifts were almost non-existent except on holiday weekends. That seemed to be changing about the time we returned back to Illinois (1990). Then, we thought the Winter Olympics would surely make Utah 'discovered'. Apparently, that still didn't happen.

I still recall the goofy liquor laws, but that was circumvented by joining 'clubs' for $25/year. I did a lot of entertaining of people from the 'outside', so had memberships in a few clubs every year. The ones at the resorts like Snowbird or Park City were big draws because visitors always wanted to see the skiing or the mountains up close. But my favorite ski runs were at Alta.

There’s a great Humboldt T-Shirt with a picture of a logger on it, and the legend “Endangered Species”. Arcata’s hopeless, but there’s still some conservatives in the county, some of them are members here. For most of its history, it was a one business county until, as you noted, the environmental movement killed it.
