Crash Course in Quality for Chinese Car

Chery's Hot-Selling Amulet Crumples in a Russian Test, Raising Broad Safety Issue

By ANDREW OSBORN August 8, 2007; Page B1

MOSCOW -- Add another product to the list of Chinese exports whose safety is being called into question: cars.

In one of the few crash-tests to date of a Chinese-made vehicle outside China, a Chery Amulet sedan's front end folded like a concertina in a recent trial here.

The Russian car magazine that organized the test said it was one of the worst performances ever and called upon Chery Automobile Co. to withdraw the car from the market. A clip of the crash test posted on Google Inc.'s video-sharing service YouTube has drawn almost 163,000 viewers.

AvtoRevu, a leading Russian auto magazine, conducted a crash test of the Chery Amulet, the best-selling Chinese car in Russia, and said the car was one of the worst performers it has ever seen.

Chinese metal is weird. Supposed to be steel but is more like lead. Much of it is both soft and brittle at the same time which is bizarre.

This is reassuring:

“Cerberus-owned Chrysler last month finalized a deal making Chery its partner to develop a range of small cars for sale in the U.S., and has vowed to work with the Chinese to improve vehicle safety”

But it did get 40 mpg and only cost $10K.

This gets the Youtube video of the year award. What China needs is a stronger crash dummy.

Lead paint, asbestos seat cushions, rubber balloon airbag's,

"..AvtoRevu said it had to dismantle the test dummy to remove it from the car..."

Ouch! Reminds me of a story a lady told me about her new Yugo. She ran over a curb and totaled it.

You are all capitalist pig's.

It is obvious that you used too hard of a barrier in this so called 'test'.

There is nothing wrong with our cars.

Or our toys.

Or our food.

And we have corrected any problems, with anything.

Everything we make is safe.

For everyone.

Trust us!

Or we will nuke your economic structure.

We are a trusted, global, friend, yes?

The Party has spoken.

That is all.

I suspect they decided to selectively give out freebies.:-)
After all, total lock-up could lead to the reduction of its media market share.
