(Ames, Iowa)... The National Federation of Republican Assemblies, who calls themselves the "Republican Wing of the Republican Party," held a straw poll at its convention in St. Louis last weekend and California Congressman Duncan Hunter exceeded all expectations. Hunter missed receiving the official endorsement of the Assemblies by a couple of percentage points. After seven rounds of voting by the endorsement committee of the organization, Hunter received 64.8 percent of the balloting, less than two percent of the two thirds vote needed. After seven ballots Fred Thompson was the only other candidate considered. Hundreds of conservatives attended the event that attracted six GOP presidential candidates.
After the general Assemblies vote, convention delegates were charged with making a formal endorsement of one candidate. Their rules required that the delegates cast their votes while in session for candidates that they wish to endorse. Only candidates receiving more than 15% of the delegate's votes in the first round of voting in the second session were considered for endorsement. After that vote, only Hunter and Fred Thompson received more than 15% of the delegate's votes. After the seventh and final round of voting Hunter had 64.8 percent support, less than two percentage points short of the needed vote. Thompson had 35.2 percent. The assemblies made no endorsement.
Tom DeLay was the keynote speaker of the convention telling fellow conservatives that unless Republicans "get their act together" in a hurry, Senator Hillary Clinton will become the next President of the United States.

It was a typo, but you’re right. The base is in a fit, and all tied up in knots.
If the RINOs think we’re gonna lay down and get stepped on again, they’re mistaken.

I found the article confusing too. That is why I added the link to the site. The editors note at the bottom was a poll in addition to the straw poll.
It was a poll of the poll.

“But only if we choose a conservative that motivates hardworking taxpaying families want to go to the polls.
Go Duncan Hunter!

I believe Hunter will attract both Republicans, and Dems, just like Ronald Reagan did.
Hunter’s sincerity comes through, and it’s obvious that he’s looking out for us, not his own ego (like some of them).

This looks like a set up to me and it stinks. I know of and like the NFRA but this stinks.
Someone in leadership must have said “We better stop balloting or we are going to end up endorsing a guy who can’t win.” I’m not a sour grapes kind of guy but this stinks BAD to me.

Can you say PRESIDENT Hunter Hunter would lose all 50 states in a general election.
And he'd lose them all not because he's a true conservative...that has nothing to do with it. To say he has a terrible campaign organization and a neophyte staff is probably saying too much: From all appearances, he has no campaign organization nationally and he has no ability whatsoever to raise money -- two mandatory requisites to running a national campaign.
Being a great conservative and a fine man means absolutely nothing in a national political campaign. You have to be able to put together a powerful, effective national organization with big time players on your team and you have to raise sums of money that are beyond all imagination. If you don't do those things effectively, your clock will get cleaned. As fine a person as he is, he's shown no ability to do those things that are required to run a national campaign. That's why he is running south of Tommy Thompson nationally right now.

Care to guess how the NFRA endorsement came out in October 1999?... They failed to reach the 66% requirement that year also. If this year is no better than 1999 it means very little.
62.4% Steve Forbes
37.4% Pat Buchanan
And we know how these two came out .... Buchanan leaving the GOP and Forbes dropping out after the Delaware primary.....

Conservative group fails to decide on endorsement |

A grass-roots conservative Republican organization on Sunday failed to agree on which GOP presidential candidate it would endorse. The first National Federation of Republican Assemblies convention ended with a vote in which publisher Steve Forbes got 164 votes, or 62.4 percent, with Pat Buchanan getting 99 votes, or 37.6 percent. But Forbes fell short of the group's by-law requiring a two-thirds majority for NFRA endorsement. The three-day NFRA convention in Kansas... |

Hate to burst your bubble, but Hunter, unless he gets his act together and some real notice in the public, doesn't have a chance, period.
You can call us naysayers, defeatists or whatever you want. Fact is, Duncan has limited support, both here and nationwide. He is hardly known, and whatever his qualifications are get buried by the MSM. It's great you support your candidate. Just don't come crying about not voting when he has to drop out.
