WASHINGTON: Republican presidential hopeful Tom Tancredo says the best way he can think of to deter a nuclear terrorist attack on the US is to threaten to retaliate by bombing Islamic holy sites.
The Colorado congressman on Tuesday told about 30 people at a town hall meeting in the state of Iowa that he believes such a terrorist attack could be imminent and that the US needs to hurry up and think of a way to stop it.
“If it is up to me, we are going to explain that an attack on this homeland of that nature would be followed by an attack on the holy sites in Mecca and Medina,” Tancredo said at the Family Table restaurant.
“Because that’s the only thing I can think of that might deter somebody from doing what they otherwise might do,” Tancredo said in comments recorded and posted on the Web site iowapolitics.com.
A Washington-based Islamic civil rights and advocacy group responded in anger on Thursday, calling Tancredo’s statement “unworthy of anyone seeking public office in the United States.” “Perhaps it’s evidence of a long-shot candidate grasping at straws and trying to create some kind of a controversy that might appeal to a niche audience of anti-Muslim bigots,” said Ibrahim Hooper, spokesman for the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

I think a civil war in Pakistan is probably inevitable. The battle of the Red Mosque is just the beginning. The Pakistani government will have to purge its military and the ISI of double agents in order to to be successful. If the civil war gets cranked up, our forces will get our shot at Zawahiri, bin Laden et al, with the blessing or at least the acquiescence of the Paki regime.

All these FReepers thinking the hirabhists and Muslims are going to just cry “Uncle!” and roll over with a concerted attack against their holy sites are simply deluding themselves.
It’s the equivalent of asking Catholics to kowtow by destroying the Vatican or expecting the Japanese to cooperate with post WWII rebuilding by threatening to execute the Emperor.

We've done it before (8/6 & 8/9, 1945), and if one or more of our cities goes up in a nuclear fireball and it's positively determined the perps had state backing we'd do it again in a nanosecond. If state backing/involvement can't be determined the situation becomes more complicated, but the nuclear option is never off the table.
The point of this discussion was a publicized threat (promise, actually) that any overzealous islamist who contemplated nuking us would be assured that he did so facing the certainty that he would have to stand before his "god" as the proximate cause of the ultimate defilement of that "god"'s holiest sites.
Our enemies should have no doubt that their acts against us -- even in the name of their religion -- will have the direst of consequences.
A nice sentiment, but a nasty solution. The fallout likely will land in some inconvenient places, like YOUR yard, or MINE, or downtown Moscow or Bejing. Can we find a way to eradicate the vermin without “burning down the house”?
I’d like to see our leaders declare islam to be a political ideology as evil & corrupt as fascism & communism. Its practice should be made illegal. Muslim countries should be reviled & shunned.
Additionally, our gov’t should do another “Manhattan” project to free us of dependence on foreign energy sources, which will bankrupt the mullahs & sheiks & dry up funds for jihad. Without oil money, these people will return to the tents & camels where they belong.
Heck, for a while it looked like Obama was going to be the psycho warmonger candidate this election.
ANY major attack on US soil, nuclear or otherwise, should bring the most powerful response from our military. And this must be our President’s policy and it should be made public, for all to know.
That may prove to be quite a task. Just about every city in the middle east is prefaced with the word "HOLY", however I for one am willing to give it try!!
True enough. And the mainstream media is only too happy to find the few that aren't and declare them so.
There are no moderate muslims. There are only practicing muslims and people who pretend to practice islam because it promotes a longer life. The koran demands that sharia law be forced on the entire world. Period.
The growth of islam is much more extensive than most people, even on Freeper, understand. For example a couple of friends just returned from Kenya and told me the Saudi's are providing free clean water and electricity to much of the country. The catch is you can't use it unless you convert to islam. Lots of Kenyans are 'converting' out of desperation but the interesting thing is that after attending mosque for some time the conversions become real. islam is seductive. You are part of a big, powerful group that god himself has given permission to be in power. You get authority. You get to abuse non-believers. And the supreme moral force in the universe says it is ok. Over 40 countries around the world, that are not now considered part of the muslim world, are rapidly converting. This is world war.
If the threat was credible (destruction of 'holy sites') it would act as a strong deterrent in my opinion. What do you suggest as an alternative? Pretend you are the President. What is your response going to be if Houston is nuked tomorrow?
I guess if I was POTUS I would threaten retaliation on mecca but my actual response might be directed against military and infrastructure - at least at first. Unfortunately that is complicated by the fact that destroying ME oil production would triple or more oil prices and would lead to a severe world wide recession. You could occupy the major oil fields instead but that would really get Russia, China, India, and even Europe really excited. No easy choices here. I'm glad I'm not the next President.
Quickly building several hundred nuclear power plants and converting to hydrogen powered transportation would certainly be helpful.

My response would be to VIOLATE the airspace and territorial sovereignty of the nations where there are known Al-Quaida strongholds and ANNIHILATE them. Remember the song by Martha & The Vandellas “Nowhere To Run”. Our B-2s and F-22s would be very, VERY, V-E-R-Y, B-U-S-Y ! ! ! Al-Quaida stronghold one day SANDBOX the next ! ! !
