“58-year-old Chauncey Bailey was most recently promoted to editor of the Oakland Post”
Possibly done by a disgruntled co-worker who was passed over for this promotion.
Not to mention the difficulty tracking the weapon.
Mrs. Nordberg: "Oh, my poor Nordberg! He was such a good man, Frank. He never wanted to hurt anyone. Who would do such a thing?"
Frank Drebin: "It's hard to tell. A gang of thugs, a blackmailer, an angry husband, a gay lover..."

Careful there! The Brady Bunch might just pick up on that and require identification of each shot. After all, there should be nothing involving a (gasp) gun that is untraceable. s/
Yes. It’s so much nicer than a hole in the body.
From what I read, there were reportedly four shots, two of which hit.
Thank goodness this was a gun-free zone. I’m sure the reporter was a big proponent of “reasonable” gun control. I’m sure the reporter is very glad he didn’t carry a gun that could accidentally go off and hurt a child or that he might be tempted to use if he lost his temper. I’m sure that the other reporters at NBC11 are now clamoring for MORE gun control. This, I am sure of. Look for a new poll on their website tonight...
Yup, there’s still no known way to match buckshot pellets to a specific shotgun - and if the shooter took the expended hulls with him (easy to do with a 12ga pump, or if he used a double-barrel he would have done so automatically) then there’s nothing at the scene to trace the shooter with - at least not with regards to ballistics.
No, it will be easy to track, the perp left empties on the scene. Empty shell will have marks matching chamber.
How do you miss with a 12 ga. at point blank range? You'd literally have to be aiming the opposite direction. Even with alternating shot/slug loads that would be pretty bad shooting.
LOL! One of my favorite movies.
The target was uncooperative? I know I'd be bustin' a move under the circumstances. ;)
It’s still possible. The shotgun is an aimed weapon, not an area-effect weapon.
Assuming a standard 18” “home defense” barrel, pellets only spread at one inch per yard of linear travel.
And a couple of passes with a file will render that information useless. You would have breech-face impressions, not chamber impressions.
Could also be a sawed off. They spread pellets badly.
Have you ever looked at the end of a firing pin under a microscope?
