Permalink Why Bill OReillys Attack on FreeRepublic.com are Unfair
Bill O’Reilly’s been making waves the past few weeks by focusing on the prevalance of ‘hateful’ content at the liberal website, Daily Kos. O’Reilly is particularly disturbed to see Democratic presidential candidates agreeing to speak at the annual YearlyKos convention that will take place August 2nd through 5th.
To show balance in his reporting, O’Reilly has unfortunately chosen to target the good people who visit the conservative website, www.FreeRepublic.com. Last night O’Reilly had on his show a friend of mine, Kristinn Taylor, who is a spokesperson for Free Republic, to defend the website from O’Reilly’s criticisms.
To his credit, O’Reilly noted that the amount of controversial content at FreeRepublic pales in comparison to that which appears on a near-daily basis at DailyKos.
As someone who visits FreeRepublic each day, and as someone who has contributed to the website’s fundraising drives, I feel compelled to speak out in defense of FreeRepublic from the critical comments made by O’Reilly.
FreeRepublic.com was launched in the infancy of the Internet, serving as a source for the sharing of news stories from around the world, and the chance to have an open dialogue on these stories. Soon thereafter, FReepers (as they are known), used the website to also organize grass roots efforts to allow patriotic Americans to mobilize efforts to make their voices heard in the public square.
As the Chairman of Move America Forward, the nation’s largest pro-troop organization, I’ve seen the impact that such efforts have had. Thousands upon thousands of proud, decent Americans who love their country have become informed of Move America Forward’s countless pro-troop rallies, care package shipments and calls for help to assist the heroic men and women of the United States military thanks to Free Republic.
To equate these decent and noble efforts with those of a website like DailyKos, which routinely denounces the U.S. military and the foundations of liberty that this nation cherishes, is dishonest and unfair.
I won’t stand for that, and I urge all the members and supporters of Move America Forward to show solidarity with the great Americans who participate at FreeRepublic forums.
This September FReepers will once again use the FreeRepublic website to organize public displays of support for our troops and their missions in the War on Terror. This is the kind of good work these people do each and every day, and that deserves the respect and support from all of us who cherish this country and the leadership our nation provides in fighting the forces of tyranny and terrorism.

Ack! It could be, but it’s not. Out of morbid curiosity, a little googling leads to O’Reilly’s non-fiction detective thriller “Those Who Trespass”. I just read an excerpt and it was pretty sleazy, to say the least. Sleazy enough that I think it would violate Free Republic’s posting standards if I reprinted it here. Yep, Bill O’Reilly’s own published writing is inappropriate content for a “hate site” such as this one.
After O’Reilly revealed the poison on the DailyKos a few days ago, it is likely that Leftwing Trolls from KOS came here and posted inflammatory postings to make FreeRepublic look bad or to make DailyKos look better by comparison.
I do not think that there would be Bill Oreilly haters on this website, at least not many.
Check when these nasty postings(that Bill referred to) were made, what are their dates.
You’ll probably find most were posted just in the past week.
Well put Melanie. I would have been really surprised if Jim or another spokesperson at FR had let this comment go from O’Reilly. In general, he’s a good man and was very surprised he would ever compare the good works of FR with leftist sites full of confused, self-absorbed Americans.
Yep, BOR has gotten this site completely wrong. Shame on him.
Bill O’Reilly tries very hard to come across as a populist, someone who voices the concerns of most of us, but he is just another self-promoting TV personality. When he settled with the woman who charged him with sexual impropriety, why was that settlement not revealed? On his broadcast, he said he would never speak of it again. Why? A lot of freepers have caught on to his number and have spoken out against his self-centered self-promotions. He hates that. His recent on air broadcast confirmed his desire to strike back at FreeRepublic for what some of us have rightly said about him. He is a fake, a phony, a fraud. He is nothing more than a guy from Long Island with lots of ideas about the way the world should be. And because he has a microphone and a camera, he thinks he is king and can’t believe that we all don’t agree.
I email BOR last night asking for the links he was referring to but haven’t heard anything back yet. Has anybody else heard back?
I think O'Reilly will ultimately look foolish for this.
Kristinn asked for documentation. If/when he gets it, I'm sure he'll make it available to all of us. Until then, IMO, that should be the focus..."Show us the documentation."
Again, IMO...if he hasn't received documentation by Thursday, we should bury FoxNews in e-mails, phone calls, and letters. I have free toll-free on my cell phone, and I'll bet a lot of Freepers do also. Let's waste no time on O'Reilly.
O'Reilly has an incentive to bury the documentation (IMO) because upon further examination I believe we'll find a whole bunch of nothing there.
Seeing that Bill O'Reilly pulled this boner in July, and it DOES illustrate a major attempt to 'balance' by misrepresentation, I feel BOR should be awarded the first monthy Award for July. What do you all think?

Yes, you’re right. It’s been a while. I’d be surprised if others didn’t come by and tell the folks that made such posts that they were over the line. Thanks for the response.
bill wants to be in the center.
he’s crossed swords with daily kos.
now he wants to balance things out with fr on the right.
problem: fr is not equivalent to daily kos.

I want to thank Melanie Morgan for her support of our troops and their mission. I support our troops and their mission too.
Bill O’Reilly is a sexual pevert who has no business being on television or radio.
She’s a hottie....but it looks like the air conditioning was definitely working in whatever building that is.
O'Reilly went on to add that they (at the Kos) seem to revel in hate.
If I were on with Bill I would've asked to see the posts in question. It seems from what I've seen so far, several of the "hate posts" turned out to be duds. That would've taken the air out of his charges right there. Bill does the same thing to Ann Coulter. He condemns left wing hate speech, but then says the right has it's own haters, too. Equating Ann Coulter with the crazies on the left.
Still, Bill O'Reilly uses his position as a national figure in a way that I'm thankful for. He goes after judges who are lenient on child abusers, he draws attention to the borders, he takes on the liberal media while he himself is a liberal.
It is intellectual laziness to equate Ann Coulter with the hate on the left just as it is to equate freerepublic with the Daily Kos. Perhaps, it comes naturally if you're a moderate Kool-Aid drinker?
“Didnt BOR get himself into hot water with one of his underlings?
Caught on tape being raunchy with her or something?
Is that true and what became of it?
Dont know, and would like to hear if anyone else heard of it.”
Go to the Smoking Gun website, and you’ll be able to find the transcript of the tapes posted there.
That’s another reason BOR doesn’t like Freepers...the transcript was posted on one of these BOR threads in the past few evenings.
