Work on Texas border wall to begin soon: Chertoff

HOUSTON (Reuters) - Construction on a border wall in southern Texas is expected to begin by this autumn, despite strong local opposition, U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said in an interview published on Thursday.

Chertoff told the Houston Chronicle the federal government "can't rule out" using powers of eminent domain to seize land for the wall that is intended to stem the flow of illegal immigrants entering the United States from Mexico.

In heavily Hispanic southern Texas, where cultural and economic ties to Mexico run deep, local officials, business groups and environmentalists have spoken out against the wall as unnecessary and unwanted.

But Chertoff said national security was at stake, so the project will move ahead shortly.

"I expect we'll be doing some construction in Texas this fiscal year," he said, referring to the government fiscal year ending September 30.

This is BS for plausible deniability when the next attack comes.
Proof:
1) Chertoff will only "begin by this autumn". Why wait?
2) Chertoff will only begin where there is "strong local opposition". Why there?
3) Chertoff threatens to use "eminent domain to seize land' to increase fears, only so that he will be stopped.
4) Chertoff does not expect to finish the wall because he says, "I expect we'll be doing some construction in Texas this fiscal year".

This is obviously a plan to do nothing. Again.

Because they do not want to follow the rules and laws of the country they reside in for starters.

Who says they aren't? Tejanos are top-notch Americans - I don't know why you are slandering them on zero evidence.

More on 'Memo to Chertoff:

"153 miles of wall in place in Texas by the end of 2008."

"operational control" of the border by 2013 by building the 700-mile (1,120-km) wall along parts of the frontier and creating a "virtual fence" in desert areas with drones, sensors, cameras, satellite technology and vehicle barriers."

The border between the United States and Mexico is 2100 mile (3360 km). Texas-Mexico border is about 1200 miles. Looks like US citizens are getting short-changed ... even with drones and satellites still a bit of a gap. Like a fat man in a suit too small.

Guess any extra money to build the whole thing goes for Chertoff's Performance Bonus. Better deal than Gen. Pace got.

That brings to mind “Actions speak louder than words”. When all 800 miles are finished, finished properly and patrolled...well..we’ll see.

Hey Chertoff, what about those employers, we need daily action on that, no welfare benefits to illegals, and some deportation too.

you are correct. besides with the north american union being shoved down our throats after the august meetings in quebec, they will have no need for a fence.

Washington aims to have "operational control" of the border by 2013...

2013!?

That's TWELVE YEARS after the WTC came down.

More than three times the length of our active involvement in the Second World War.

Longer than the Apollo program.

Too darned long.

It sounds like this virtual wall (drones, lasers, yada...yada..) will be much more expensive than concrete mortar and steel. So whats the big push for virtual...

Hmm I guess I allready know the answer to that...

The Secure Fence Act signed by President Bush last year had called for 854 miles of double fence finished by May 30, 2008...

Chertoff better get busy with his little hammer...

Chertoff the Lame-Terrorist Enabler: "Do you me to build a fence?"

Terrorists: " No. I expect you to let us kill Americans because of your failures."

The law to build a fence has been passed. It is law. Build it. If they do not like it try and get an injunction.

I lived and worked all over the Texas border for many years and know many Tejanos as you call them. The ones I know are for the wall and restricting immigration.

You forget that Texas was conquered and Mexico ousted in the Mexican War. There are several very excellant fictional works describing the trauma that resulted from the war to both anglo and hispanic cirizens at the time.

The old famalies have intermingled for generations producing a complex geneological mix that carries over to properties. There is a considerable difference between the nuevo wetbacks and the original property owners who trace Mexican/Texican ancestry back for generations.

How long did it take the people of Israel to erect their wall? It was very effective and, as I recall, it didn’t take that long to construct it.

The government needs to stop hedging and follow a proven example of keeping people on their side of the border.

Good point about building the railroad. I have seen similar behavior from government before. The neighbors wanted a couple of traffic bumps put into the long downhill road near Casa RKV. The city put 8 of them in a 3/4 mile strip. It was planned to fail, and yep pretty soon people wanted them out. All the locals wanted was one or two to stop the drag racing. This, like building the border fence in an area like this one in Texas is designed to cause maximum grief and do as little as possible to actually stop illegal immigration.

I’m in favor of a wall all along the entire border, but why start it here, where there’s local opposition? Why not start it in Arizona, where the ranchers are crying out from relief from armed-gangs migrating north over their land?

Why not both places at the same time? Local opposition won't diminish by next year or the year after.

You completely misunderstand the situation. There are lots of Texans with ancestors who fought in all our wars because they were citizens.

They trace back roots to ancestors who lived in the area before there was a Texas. Texas was taken by military force. Under President James K Polk another war was fought that defeated Santa Anna for once and for all. General Winfield Scott in a combined arms campaign, invaded Mexico from the Yucathan and captured Mexico City and the Halls of Montezuma.

They were not forced to leave after the war, Texas is big, and the large ranches were not confiscated just because the owners were Mexican. They became Texans and their people still are.
