Conservatives Shouldn't Abandon Bush
Townhall.com ^ | July 13, 2007 | Mike Gallagher

Posted on 07/13/2007 5:15:02 AM PDT by Kaslin

Watching a steady stream of Democrats like Harry Reid, Dick Durbin, and Chuck Schumer each take their turn delightedly pummeling President Bush over the war in Iraq today, I couldn’t help but think of fellow conservatives who are starting to give aid and comfort to these Democrat Party loyal oppositionists.

According to Byron York of the National Review, the Republican Party base has simply decided to throw Mr. Bush under the wheels of the bus. Since so many of us disagree with him on things like illegal immigration and Scooter Libby, York opines that a whole bunch of Republican loyalists are practically counting the days until Jan. 20, 2009, when a new commander-in-chief takes up residence at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

Other conservative voices are jumping on the Bush-bashing bandwagon. The other night on Fox News, I saw a radio host proclaim that the president’s soft stance on illegals has cost him support for the war in Iraq.

Just what, precisely, is the point?

Why do conservatives believe that trashing the Bush Administration’s efforts on everything from this complicated war to a commutation of a vice-presidential aide will accomplish anything but give Democrats more ammunition against the GOP in 2008

Look, I’m as disappointed in this administration’s attempted amnesty for illegals as anyone. But I looked President Bush in the eye in the Oval Office and saw a man who truly believes in his heart that giving illegals a “path to citizenship” is the right thing to do.

I believe he’s wrong. But I know that this good and decent man believes he’s right.

So because of this issue, I’m supposed to abandon my president?

I’m expected to go on radio and TV and give miserable attack dogs like Dick Durbin more ways to say, “See -- even Republican supporters of Bush are defecting!”?

From the day the bombs started dropping on Baghdad, President Bush kept telling us that nothing about this war would be easy. Our nation has never attempted something as bold as installing democracy in this troubled part of the world and attempting to make a country like Iraq stable enough so that they can handle their own terrorists without our intervention.

Simply put, the vast majority of Americans supported our country’s pre-emptive strike. The longer this battle rages, the more we see impatient Americans start complaining. I guess that’s what a society in a Tivo/Iphone era does.

And I certainly expect that from Democrats who blame George W. Bush for everything from hurricanes to health care.

But I think it takes some guts to stand behind a president who is doing what he believes to be right, even in the face of enormous opposition.

Liberals are emboldened by Republican-fueled criticism. And if good folks like Byron York aren’t careful, we’ll be handing over the White House on a silver platter to Hillary or Barack. After all, just how far can Rudy Giuliani, Mitt Romney or Fred Thompson distance themselves from the Bush Administration?

Liberals are emboldened by Republican-fueled criticism. And if good folks like Byron York aren’t careful, we’ll be handing over the White House on a silver platter to Hillary or Barack. After all, just how far can Rudy Giuliani, Mitt Romney or Fred Thompson distance themselves from the Bush Administration?

Besides, who really wants to be on the same side of the political fence as Harry Reid, Ted Kennedy…or Betty Williams?

Betty Williams won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1976 for creating a group that helped initiate peace talks in Northern Ireland. This week, she was the keynote speaker at The International Women’s Peace Conference in Dallas. According to the Dallas Morning News, during her speech she told the thousand or so attendees, “Right now, I could kill George Bush.” The paper said she went on to demand his impeachment since “the Muslim world right now is suffering beyond belief” as a result of this administration’s foreign policy.

What a woman of peace. That’s some “peace conference.”

I’m not sure what would happen if an American traveled to Northern Ireland and expressed a desire to kill Mary McAleese, the current President of Ireland. I doubt that such an opinion would be met with cheers and a standing ovation, as was reported had occurred when the Nobel laureate said what she said in Dallas.

And when we tracked Betty Williams down and put her on my radio show, I was shocked to hear her claim that any published report that quoted her as saying, “Right now, I could kill George Bush” was lying. I reminded her that according to numerous published reports, she used the exact same phrase in a July 24, 2006 speech to schoolchildren at the Brisbane City Hall. At that point in the interview, she sounded totally defeated and said she not only “regretted” saying it, when I asked her if she was sorry for saying it, she said she was. In fact, the Dallas Morning News sent me the audio of the speech which confirms their reporting of Ms. Williams comments about the president.

You can hear my interview with this awful woman at www.mikeonline.com.

People like Betty Williams and Michael Moore and Nancy Pelosi and Keith Olbermann and so many others on the left have made it quite clear what they think of George W. Bush. They teem with hatred and contempt.

They sure don’t need to get any assistance from us. Now, more than ever, we ought to stand behind President Bush.

But if people on the left OR right don’t want to support him these days, I have a heartfelt reminder: November of 2008 will be here soon enough.

Until then, how about getting off the president’s back?

"I believed in the Iraq war and still want to win it, but I question Bush's desire to really win it. I also question his motives now. When 7,000 Iraqis are coming to live in America after 3,000 Americans went to Iraq and gave their life so those 7,000 could be free, I have a real problem with that.

Its not that Conservatives don't want to win, its that we no longer trust Bush's motives and loyalty."

Well said. I too fear that Bush is bogged down practicing a politically correct police effort to keep the Iraqi fractions from killing one another rather than fighting an all out war against terrorism. The information coming from Iraq is more confusing than not with articles (one in particular) stating that while there are more troops in Iraq, there are actually fewer soldiers getting less done because the troops have broken up into smaller groups in Bagdad, using MORE troops to fortify their smaller, more numerous, posts leaving FEWER troops to patrol the neighborhoods.

I also question the logic in bringing 7,000 Iraqis to America if the war is truly going in the right direction.

I wish I could trust that Bush knows what he's doing ... but?

Are you willing, in your offendedness, to dump our military men and women under the bus, too? That's exactly what you're doing when you abandon the President on Iraq, because he pi$$ed you off on Immigration.

If I may interject...

I for one am royally pissed off at President Bush for his cock-handed prosecution of the war in Iraq. Because he, the CinC, chose to pursue a "small, hi-tech" strategy and failed to secure the borders, our troops are being blown away by stupid goathumpers using technology and ordnance smuggled into Iraq from Iran and Syria.

And it could have been preempted by sealing off the borders.

WTF is it about this man and his fear of borders!?

I have always supported him for the good things he has done. I agree that he thinks what hes doing is right. What I find amazing is that he ran on this issue and never hid his intentions and now when he tries to implement them, everyone is outraged. Did they think he didn’t mean what he said?

There is no reason to even comment on Kennedy and the lot. They have no interest in improving this county. Your thread was about president Bush. He can not be classified as conservative. He may be Republican, but his attitude about illegals takes him off the conservatives role. It was president Bush, not me or most other quests at this site, that was pushing the Kennedy, McCain amnesty bill.If he thinks letting the country get flooded by illegals is good for the country he is wrong. If he thinks letting trucks from Mexico on our highways is good for the country he is wrong. Many of the presidents goals I support. But letting this country get flooded by illegals and continue to not close the border are serious failures, that frankly can’t be accepted.

I am happy he is a good and decent man. I was called that once.

Doesn’t matter what poll you consider. In the end, the sample size represented on FR is FAR LARGER than any poll’s sample size and I wouldn’t be as flippant about fellow FReeper opinions as you.

That being said, methinks your post is just another attempt to build street cred so that some of you can boast on the Bot Central Daily Dose thread tonite (as you are wont to).

You people keep saying this but tell me of one time when he said anything about his North American Union desires. Tell me when he told us that his platform was to abolish the sovereignty of the United States. Of course, you won't respond. None of you people ever do address the NAU, globalist paradise.

Excellent post, txrangerette.

President Bush is a good, and decent man, and I have no doubt that his decisions are based on what he believes is the right thing to do according to the information he receives. I thank God he was elected for these two terms. I may disagree with him on some issues, but I’m glad to be disagreeing with him on a few issues instead of disagreeing with the complete philosophy of John Kerry, Al Gore, Hillary and Bill Clinton, et al.

I’ve read posts saying that they even refuse to pray for President Bush. I am appalled at that! If there is one thing this nation needs, it is repentance and prayers for the merciful, providential, guidance of Almighty God. Folks need to do a reassessment of who is the enemy, and, if they still include the president among their enemies, they need to pray all the more.

He did not run on amnesty for illegal invaders. He did not even hint at amnesty. So there for your lies.

He can shove Mexipornia up his own butt, I am NOT having it.

Your fellow camper, Laurie_d, would have called them (and you) mere “internet longevity” something or whatever....(her words; not mine). Check this thread for more information....LOL

To be honest, I don’t miss the more rabid harridans who did everythng to squelch debate on this site by pinging their comrades who then descended upon anybody who “had their feet on their necks” (do you recognize that statement?). I have a feeling that I am not in a minority with this view. Go figure, wise one.

Hey old timer, you have been here long enough to know that forums don’t disappear just because you and your pals at the RINO blog wish so. And really, unthinking automatons are a far greater threat to the Republic (paraphrasing Teddy Roosevelt).

Again, read the posts on this thread. Never know what you might learn.

I'm not a Bush hater, but he sure as hell lost most of my respect.

He gets the WOT. This is a must win over there, otherwise we will be fighting in the streets of America.

He had the right idea on social security and to drill ANWR.

He screwed the Klamath Basin Farmers so hard it's doubtful that the basin will ever comeback to where it's been.

He's still shoving green down our throats! -

President Bush looks greener by the day. Bush has nominated outgoing chairman of The Nature Conservancy, Henry Paulson, as U. S. Treasury Secretary, as well as, former Idaho governor Dirk Kempthorne, as Interior Secretary. Kempthorne's public lands philosophy is this: "When there is a conflict between conserving resources unimpaired for future generations and the use of those resources, conservation will be predominant."

He's screwed America to death over the border, border security and all the stupid things it takes to fly in this country now, while the southern border is wide open. We will probably take a 100 city hit on the next AQ hit. While they searched 80 year old granny's AQ, or anyone with a vested interest in attacking America, brought it in from Mexico, while the WH was warning Iraq, and Syria to watch their borders.

To top it off is the Ramos and Compean case. Gilmer Hernandez the latest victim of Jorge's strike against those who would defend the country from attacks from foreign interests. Biggest mistake there was not killing the drug trafficker. Makes me wonder how the man can sleep with himself, while they rot in jail. The message is quite clear about what to do if you want a pension and are BP, do what the admin wants, forget about the right thing.

George W. Bush's Speech on Latin America

Western Hemisphere

America has one national creed, but many accents. We are now one of the largest Spanish-speaking nations in the world. We're a major source of Latin music, journalism and culture.

Just go to Miami, or San Antonio, Los Angeles, Chicago or West New York, New Jersey and close your eyes and listen. You could just as easily be in Santo Domingo or Santiago, or San Miguel de Allende.

For years our nation has debated this change -- some have praised it and others have resented it. By nominating me, my party has made a choice to welcome the new America.

I still haven't found an American who supports the super highway through Texas.

Thanks Jorge,to believe that I voted for you twice, so that I didn't have to lose the country faster via demorat. Jorge has sold us down the river.

Sam Adams best summed it up when he said," If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands that which feed you. May your chain be set lightly upon you and posterity forget ye were our countrymen."

I pray we have a country, and can get someone in, such as Duncan Hunter, committed to this nation, not their "legacy building".

Save your breath bushbot, tired of you people telling me it's raining, while your pissing all over us.

>>Lott’s lifetime ACU rating is 92 (thru 2006) compared to Cochran’s 80, his fellow Senator from MS. If you don’t understand the difference between the voting record of Dems compared to Reps on issues critical to conservatives, you are the one being duped.<<

Before 1780, Benedict Arnold would have received a “patriot rating” in the high 90s. His treason canceled all his previous “patriot ratings.” What I am saying is that high conservative ratings are not a guarantee of future conservative behavior.

The amnesty bill was not a trivial matter, and I don’t think Lott deserves his position as #2 Republican in the senate. But I would be surprised if Lott sought another term. I don’t think he was sure he wanted to be a senator this time. I hope a true conservative steps forward in the next election for Lott’s seat.

I guess I don’t know when enough prayers are enough. Bush must be beyond redemption. There have been millions of prayers for him. Could it be that his alcoholic Christian guilt is just too strong?I am going to spend more time trying to undo his damage than praying for him.

God helps them who help themselves.
