London - An estimated two billion people worldwide have watched the Live Earth concerts on the television. The shows designed to highlight climate change were organised in Australia, Asia, Europe, South Africa and the United States. Dozens of stars such as Crowded House, Madonna and The Red Hot Chili Peppers performed in cities which included Sydney, New York and London.
The global series of concerts kicked off in Sydney Australia where the show started with a traditional welcome dance by members of the Aboriginal community. Live Earth is the brainchild of former US presidential candidate Al Gore. He opened the event in Washington, and spoke to the public in Tokyo via satellite, saying it was high time to heal the planet. Live Earth is ending with a concert in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday evening.
So you believe that 2 billion watched this? How naive!
“I hear its coming to DC.”
I heard there was a concert held at a mall in DC, and Gore was there. It was reported that a little over 100 people showed up. It was pointed out, however, that in a mall, it is very easy for 100 people to stop and listen for a few minutes as they are shopping. Great showing, I’s say!!!
I think it was totally cancelled in one country.
That’s the trouble with forums. You post something and everybody thinks you believe in and support everything posted.
I thought it was interesting that Radio Netherlands should put up a story like this and never saw the event myself or any part of it. Not watching TV these days. Just reading.
While driving past a newspaper stand today, I did see the event made the headlines in one of our local papers, so it’s impossible to say it didn’t have impact because it did and it will have impact.
I didn’t suggest that it would not have impact. Only the amount is debatable.
What I did suggest was that the 2 billion number is unverifiable and in all likelihood unattainable.
As far as Fox news, I don’t watch TV news. I get 98% from multiple websites. But if it’s considered “false” news, please remind me where Dan Rather and Jayson Blair were employed.
You can see the crowd in the background.
Here's a more accurate statistic:
At least 50% of clueless, brain-dead Americans will accept this complete and utter bullshit as a fact.
Any bets?
Those are the Arctic Monkeys.
They didn’t play the gig. They criticized the gig.
The 2 Billion number is as phony as the Warming.
Pray for W and Our Troops
The part that troubles me most is that the initial claim was misconstrued to be an estimate (and of course not corrected by the organizers) that 2 billion people would watch the event, which was than further misconstrued by over-eager journalists to definitively state that 2 billion people actually watched the stupid thing. This is the same type of laziness that I have come to expect from journalists who do not question dubious statements if they fall within their belief system no matter how far fetched.
Equally troubling for me is that this claim will become fact through sheer repetition.

What’s Live Earth?
Really? Heres where I pulled it from, with a caption that seems to contradict your explanation:
Don’t take that post seriously. Since the Arctic Monkeys criticized the effort and since the pictured band played in Arctic-like conditions, I just put the two together.
Have you ever bought Arctic Monkeys’ music? I have. I’m not disappointed. Time Magazine put one of their albums top-’o-the-heap last year.
Hey, I was willing to believe you.
;-)
No, I haven’t bought, or listened to, Arctic Monkeys music. I have no clue who or what they are.
We both agreed that we did not know which network carried it.
In our household, we have two people and one dog and six TV sets plus two in a motor home. Not one TV set saw any of Al Gore's concerts.
We have two people in our house and six TVs and we usually just watch DVDs on them. I wouldn’t have even known what channel Algore’s deal was on.
I’m curious. What channel carried it?
