Woman, 70, Bloody nose for having a dry lawn

'He really abused me,' resident says after arrest by Orem police officer

OREM - Two days after Independence Day, 70-year-old Betty Perry experienced an ordeal she said shouldn't be happening in America.

The retired military and U.S. government employee answered the door at her home Friday morning to talk with a police officer about her bone-dry lawn and ended up getting arrested and suffering a bloody nose. "What have I done?" she asked. "I'm old now. I can't believe this."

The Orem police officer, as yet unnamed by city officials, cited Perry for violating a city ordinance with her "sadly neglected and dying landscape," which resembles dry hay.

When Perry refused to give her name and tried to walk inside to call her son, the officer tried to arrest her, police say. According to a police news release, while she was struggling, she tripped and fell on her doorstop, cutting open the bridge of her nose. But Perry maintains the officer split her nose when he hit her with the set of handcuffs he was trying to restrain her with.

"As far as I'm concerned, he really abused me - he brutally abused me," Perry said. "For what?" The officer called for backup, because he was driving a truck, and the now-handcuffed Perry was taken to a holding facility in Orem. She was not given water or allowed to wash her hands or call her son, she said.

"After being booked, supervisors became aware of the circumstances and immediately released the woman and returned her to her home on the basis that there were other options available to handle this situation besides making an arrest and holding the woman in jail," Orem police Lt. Doug Edwards wrote in the news release.

I live in Orem, and when I saw a TV news story where the woman was being interviewed, I could swear I’d had dealings with her before. I can’t remember exactly where, but I have a vague memory that she was a somewhat agressive nut.

My encounters with the Orem PD have always been excellent. They are not aggressive control freaks.

My educated guess is that this woman provoked the whole thing.

Hi, I posted before I saw your post. I can’t remember where I have run into this woman before, but I had a vague recollection that she was a kind of in-your-face loon, and that it probably what had happened with the cop. Thanks for posting.

If you haven’t contacted the media, you should. They were all over the Orem PD, and someone needs to tell the other side.

If you think that the home invasion, physical roughing up, cuffing and arrest of a 70 year old woman because her LAWN WASN’T PRETTY is acceptable than I don’t know what else to say

**************

I do, but I guess what it really comes down to is that I'm surprised to find anyone who thinks that is acceptable for the state to be this involved in a citizen's landscaping to be found here on Free Republic.

I don't think any of us know enough about the situation to be on either side, if we're picking sides. I think there is enough blame to go around

The lady was immediately released and the cop was suspended which should show that he was in the wrong since cops are almost never suspended due to situations like this due to "closing ranks."

It is disturbing that so many freepers believe that "having an attitude" is an arrestable offense - especially on your own property.

To me, what really stands out is how quickly a thread can acquire a lot of knee-jerk responses, without serious thought and often without even reading the original article.

You might want to take your own advice - the woman was immediately released and the cop was suspended. You're backing a losing horse here.

That is really bad. The cop obviously lied to cover himself. Good thing someone was filming.

I have to ask you, though: How consistent are you on this issue? You pointed out that the cop was black and the man he shot was white. Are you just as outraged when it’s vice-versa? Just curious.

I have to respectfully disagree with you here. Anytime an investigation occurs people are usually suspended , most often with pay. That’s routine. If this young LE officer is guilty of nothing more than being a stickler to the rules I figure he will still get rail roaded by emotions. It’s not cool to rough up “old ladies” regardless of the situation. However, it’s also not cool for “old ladies” to take advantage of their age and expect special treatment.

Have to disagree - suspensions are very rare since departments very rarely investigate incidents. During investigations, officers are almost always put on administrative duty and not suspended.

There is probably 3 or 4 threads a day here on FR alone about out of control cops. In the vast majority of the cases no investigation or suspension occurs and the department spokesperson either blames the public for not bowing down or just says that they will look into it.

It’s just wording. At my place we use the term suspension. Of course there are bad cops and these are the one’s we hear about on FR. Good cop stories don’t get too far. People can make mistakes though. I’m just saying we should look at both sides and give him as much consideration as her until this is resolved. He has a heck of a lot more to loose.

I doubt he has a problem with black people per se. However, maybe he's starting to take notice of the recent trend of black on white crime in America.

This site has been keeping a tally.

I don't particularly care for some of the content of the site, but it has done a good job of documenting the recent horrific cases of black on white crime that has seemingly gone unnoticed by the MSM.
