LONG KNIVES OUT AFTER BORDER BILL ("It wasn't the people's will. And they were heard.")
NY POST ^ | July 2, 2007 | ROBERT D. NOVAK

Posted on 07/02/2007 3:24:25 AM PDT by Liz

I asked one of the few conservative Republican senators who stuck with President Bush on immigration to assess how Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell handled the issue. Asking not to be quoted by name, he replied: "If this were a war, Sen. McConnell should be relieved of command for dereliction of duty." Not only did the minority leader end up voting against an immigration bill that he said was better than the 2006 version that he supported, but he also abandoned his post, keeping off the floor during final stages of Senate debate.

Something to keep in mind about my little corner of the world is that, being in the Deep South, it was 80% Democrat until Ronald Reagan came along.

Before 1980, I cannot recall a single Republican holding office around here.

My point, I guess, is that people here, regardless of declared party, are old-fashioned conservative- strong on the military, support the Bill of Rights, don't like too much government annoying them in their private lives.

This Illegal Alien Invasion thing has cut across party lines and brought people back together like nothing I've ever seen before.

All people here have to do, is look around, see how their neighborhoods are changing- for the worse- and notice how property values are dropping... who wants to live next to a duplex with front an back yards full of new cars and trucks, 10 families in the duplex, and three satellite dishes sprouting in the yard?

I hate Amnesty with almost the disdain that I hold for old “snaggle tooth’ here. Novak... a poser placed to bring down Conservatives wherever possible. He is the very definition of “covert agent for evil”!

Novak and all proponents of that bill are encouraging racism by their remarks.

Keeping the borders open is NOT in the best interest of national security, one would think that Chernoff would realize that.

Allowing millions of unknowns into this country and rewarding them is outrageous! But the greedy companies and greedy globalists don’t care about national security or the fact that China is trying to poison us and our pets.

That is one of the *soundest* reasons I’ve heard yet to elect Rep. Duncan Hunter as our next US president. Otherwise, the status quo will continue.

Challengers to these dumbos need only mention “amnesty” to attract droves of voters.

I'd bet that Hillary would be the first to begin extolling the evils of the "amnesty" bill, blaming the Republicans as being "soft on illegals."

Col. George Custer would have lived to see his grandchildren if he’d have had the good sense of Mitch McConnell. Discretion was definitely the better part of valor.

Novak writes, "It is difficult to exaggerate the pessimism about the immediate political future voiced by Republicans in Congress when not on the record. With an unpopular president waging an unpopular war, they see electoral catastrophe in 2008."

I unfortunately agree with this assessment.

One thing I neglected to point out is the change in tenor of calls, over this issue, in the last 5 or 6 years.

It used to be that most callers were grudging admirers- "hard working, God-fearing, love their families" was a typical conversation.

That changed recently, and I think the driver behind it is the rash of car wrecks involving presumably illegal aliens.

A typical tale is "I was proceeding lawfully, when out of nowhere this car runs into me, and everybody in the car bails out and runs away. The police get there, and they say 'there's nothing we can do about this...'"

This happened to the daughter of a friend of mine- she escaped with bruises, but her car was totaled, and the police didn't do a damned thing towards tracking down the runners.

Haven't seen The Goat Ritual ( yet! ) but then again, I haven't peeked down the street this morning, either...

The Republicans have some serious problems, yet many of them are in denial.

The Republican President pushes an amnesty for illegals bill.

The Republican Senate passed this bill in 2006. The Republican House, however, tables it.

The Republicans lost both Houses in 2007.

Nancy was going to clean up the House.

Hillary says she is going to clean up the White House.

The Republican President pushes an amnesty for illegals bill. He now has “a Congress I wan work with”.

The Democratic Senate killed this bill by defeating it in the spring of 2007.

The Republican President pushes for resurrecting the amnesty for illegals bill.

The Senate Republicans helped resurrect this dead bill.

The Democratic Senate killed this bill by defeating it in the summer of 2007.

==

The Republicans have serious problems with their leadership. They need to clean their own internal house. They have lost credibility with the American pubic.

They had their heads buried in sand in 2006 and lost both Houses. They are still in denial.

The voters associated this push for amnesty for illegals with George W and the Republican leaders.

Whether by design or dumb luck, the amnesty bill, its initial defeat, the President reviving it, the Republicans pushing it, makes the Dems look better than the Pubbies.

The Republicans need to clean up their own party, and they need to start now. Otherwise, they are going to be the minority for another 40 years.

The election of 2006 gave the Republicans notice.

The election of 2008 may be a severe remedial lesson.

The Republicans need to shake off their denial and realize they have serious problems, get their heads out of the sand, take off the blinders, deal with the internal party policies and leadership problems.

I find it hilarious when I see a pundit allude to “racism” being at the root of opposition to this piece of tripe legislation. If you want to see naked, unbridled hostility toward the illegal immigrant community, simply ask the black community what they think of the Latinos invading this country and threatening to put them on the back of the bus...

Republicans drove another nail in George W. Bush's political coffin and undermined hopes for the growing, winnable Hispanic vote. Contending the time "wasn't now" for immigration, McConnell added: "It wasn't the people's will. And they were heard." He was blaming Republican failure on his fellow citizens, which seldom works in politics.

Novak is such an a$$ and clueless. This was a win for the people. Only 26% of the people supported the bill yet the political elites tried to ram it down our throats. Novak also fails to mention that 15 Dems [including Sanders] voted against cloture as part of the total of 53. Only 12 Reps voted for cloture along with 34 Dems. In point of fact this was a Dem bill supported by the WH.
