The Republicans have serious problems with their leadership. They need to clean their own internal house. They have lost credibility with the American pubic.
They had their heads buried in sand in 2006 and lost both Houses. They are still in denial.
The voters associated this push for amnesty for illegals with George W and the Republican leaders.
Whether by design or dumb luck, the amnesty bill, its initial defeat, the President reviving it, the Republicans pushing it, makes the Dems look better than the Pubbies.
The Republicans need to clean up their own party, and they need to start now. Otherwise, they are going to be the minority for another 40 years.
The election of 2006 gave the Republicans notice.
The election of 2008 may be a severe remedial lesson.
The Republicans need to shake off their denial and realize they have serious problems, get their heads out of the sand, take off the blinders, deal with the internal party policies and leadership problems.
Absolutely.
I find it hilarious when I see a pundit allude to “racism” being at the root of opposition to this piece of tripe legislation. If you want to see naked, unbridled hostility toward the illegal immigrant community, simply ask the black community what they think of the Latinos invading this country and threatening to put them on the back of the bus...
Disagree. It was the Republicans [conservatives] that defeated this bill that was supported in the Senate primarily by Dems. Sessions, Vitter, DeMint, and Cornyn became the face of the opposition in the Senate who defied the political leadership of Lott and McConnell and the WH. Although 15 Dems eventually voted no to cloture, there is no doubt in the public's mind that it was the Rep party that stood tall and defeated a bill only 26% of the public supported. On this issue, the Reps looked better than the Dems, the WH aside.

The public sees that both parties are pandering to illegals. Right now there is no distinction being made as to which party is more responsible for the problem. I do believe the the republicans have the greatest ability to come out of this with a Reagan style majority if they will give up this notion that they must pander to a certain group.
If they will do what is best for America, enforce the current laws, build the allocated fence, and forget about amnesty for illegals, they can turn this political disaster around. The democrats, however, are backed into a corner. If they even think about doing what is right for the country, their base will be up in arms screaming. But those members of the democratic party who believe in American sovereignty, with justice and fairness for all, will leave their party in droves to vote for a pro sovereignty, anti amnesty Republican.
