In many ways, this family of five is like many others in West Michigan.
They go to church. They pay taxes. The oldest daughter does well in school and dreams of college.
But with Thursday's collapse of an immigration-reform bill in the U.S. Senate, the parents continue to fear a knock on the door that could split this family in two.
They broke immigration law a decade ago when they crossed the Mexican border and could be deported if found out. Their three daughters are citizens because they were born in America.
``All it would take is one phone call and you are gone,'' said the father, Ignacio, 45, who spoke in Spanish through an interpreter and asked that his real name not be revealed.
``I live very fearfully, watch everything I do, all out of fear of being deported.''
The bill defeated Thursday, which was backed by President Bush, would have offered a complex path to citizenship for many of the 12 million people who reside in the United States illegally.

Yes, if they’re so upset with the US, by all means, they should protest by leaving, and never coming back. That’ll teach us a thing or two. ;)
By LAW someone who enters the country illegally is defined as an “alien.” Ask any ICE agent, provided you could ever find one.
And again, by legal definition they are criminals, and I do suppose that families harboring a known criminal might live in fear of discovery. Tough.

Since he’s only been in the US illegally for a decade (10 years) and the 3 kids were born here..the oldest is only 9 at the most...
Shes not “dreaming of college” but playing with Barbie dolls..
And theyre all illegal aliens...NOT immigrants
GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
There, fixed it.
Exactly! I am even willing to help them pack!
I would like to see the Republicans in Congress push a bill to set up an immigration Hot Line. Call a number to turn in an illegal.
If there are sanctions against companies that hire illegals, or landlords that rent to them, the US government should split the fine ($10,000 per incident) with the tipster.
In the meantime, Congress should also force Mexico to become more Capitalistic in order to receive US aid. For starters, they need to privatize PEMEX.
We're even then. I'm still living "in fear" of the illegals invading (some confirmed terrorists) this country.
Where's The Fence???
This is a testament to wilfull non-assimilation (and all the hispandering in stores and elsewhere). I can't see how anyone can live somewhere for 10 years and not learn at least a smattering of the local language.
I realize that most of them are not the people on whom we should focus our anger. The people who are really to blame for this mess are Americans, but until this issue is settled in a way that prioritizes the rights and desires of American citizens I'll be running pretty low on compassion.
All I can see anymore are those bird flipping, crotch grabbing, Mexican flag waving cholos.
My first thought as well.
Ya' know? If they at least made an effort to learn English, I might be a little more sympathetic to their plight.
The fact that they are here for years (and in some cases decades) and can't even bother to learn basic, conversational English just tells me that they have no desire to assimilate.
My wife is a Russian-speaking Ukrainian. She studies English constantly. She knows there is no "Press 3 for Russian" so she learns the language the best she can.
Actually, they have been breaking the law every day since then. It's not legal for them to BE here.
He has been here over 10 years? Why didn’t he go after amnesty the first time?
He’s so scared that he gave an interview to the media. How does he pay taxes if he’s an illegal?
Demand a border fence! Build it NOW!! Beef up the border patrol and close our borders!
