In many ways, this family of five is like many others in West Michigan.
They go to church. They pay taxes. The oldest daughter does well in school and dreams of college.
But with Thursday's collapse of an immigration-reform bill in the U.S. Senate, the parents continue to fear a knock on the door that could split this family in two.
They broke immigration law a decade ago when they crossed the Mexican border and could be deported if found out. Their three daughters are citizens because they were born in America.
``All it would take is one phone call and you are gone,'' said the father, Ignacio, 45, who spoke in Spanish through an interpreter and asked that his real name not be revealed.
``I live very fearfully, watch everything I do, all out of fear of being deported.''
The bill defeated Thursday, which was backed by President Bush, would have offered a complex path to citizenship for many of the 12 million people who reside in the United States illegally.

No, they are not.
First, they are not "immigrants" but criminals who broke the law by entering illegally.
Second, they don't live in fear. The illegals continue to committ crimes with impunity in the face of a Homeland Security dept. that plainly refuses to enforce the law.
Just the other day, I heard on the local radio that the ICE was releasing felons who had completed their sentences back into society instead of deporting them, as Federal laws demand.
This 'reporter' should be indicted as an accessory to a crime.
L
i’ll wager many illegals are planning to return to mexico
Just GAG ME!
I suppose if the fear got bad enough, he could always come back home to Mexico to a hero’s welcome.

I have a solution for them — GO HOME! They are here illegally and breaking the law and need a one-way ticket back to whatever country they came from! That I am willing to see my tax dollars spent on — one way tickets out of the Country.
If only there was a place they could go and not live in fear of deportation.
Perhaps we can create one. They can speak their own language and have their own autonomous government.
We can call it Mexico.
One phrase for these “immigrants”: ESAD.
“Immigrants still living in fear”
I feel terrible for them.Maybe we should send them home so they will feel better.I know I will once there gone.
My sympathy just melted away. If I break laws I suffer the consequences. Maybe they will have to enjoy the same "privilege" that I have.
Just like there are probably a bunch of bank robbers who have never been caught that are "living in fear"
They robbed banks just because they wanted a better life for their families....
Anyone see the difference?
Hey...even the “legals” return to Mexico.....my in-laws orchard had a hired man for 30 years.....he just retired....to Mexico....although he comes back to the U.S. for several months a year....
Just another tear jerking anecdote about the good, hardworking, contributing ILLEGAL LAWBREAKERS.

I seriously doubt they’re paying taxes, except perhaps sales taxes. If you’re not a citizen with a ss#, you’re not paying taxes. If you’ve stolen an id, you’re messing up someone else’s taxes.
The have the option of applying for citizenship legally. No one forced them into the country.
Doesn't sound so nice that way does it?
Kalamazoo has a lot of liberal-leaning folks, thanks in part to WMU. The Gazette leans left as well, so this article sympathetic to illegals doesn't come as any surprise.
They'll get no sympathy from me.
“``I live very fearfully, watch everything I do, all out of fear of being deported.’’
Go back where you came from.
