Brilliant post here SL. Govt. protection of any product is a double edged sword. I found that out the hard way, my industry had 78% of the market in the early 70's today we don't even consider making those products here en mass. It's become a custom to order product. As will much of what we still make. There is no competing with the third world in some areas. Their overheads are minuscule compared to ours. Their raw material often cost less and they have little bureaucracy standing in the way. They are impossible to compete with head to head in certain product areas.
Only protectionism will save many industries we have left and that will bite the consumer.
I've become more convinced that the pro-amnesty business lobby isn't necessarily pushing for legalized status per se. After all, why would they need/want legal workers who will cost exactly the same (and have the ability to sue over workplace violations, etc) as the previously employed citizens they replaced?
Rather, I think the driver is all about grandfathering-in civil lawsuit protections. These billion $ class-action lawsuits are just beginning to work their way through the system. That's why NO bill is much better than any bill for plaintiffs (ie US citizens). If the business lobby had their druthers, the amnesty bill would forgo amnesty/registration altogether, and focus purely on legal protection.
However, in order to get the deal done, they had to agree to certain compromises. OTOH, they're counting on having no enforcement so that they can once again start hiring illegals, so it's basically win-win for them.
You guys are so quick to force farmers to buy these machines to pick their crops. Typical Central Planning mentality when you can have workers do it more efficiently. You really think farmers wouldn’t really rather have machines if it was economically feasible? Let the market decide. Its called capitalism, something Conservatives valued.
In the end your machines idea is a panacea. You drive around and see hundreds of Mexican workers and you pretend you can just snap your fingers and replace them with thousands of machines to run the carwashes, mow and plant the lawns and plant and pick the crops.
Fact is this is another lame attempt to answer the question where you going to get the workers elsewhere.

Bush has the guts to not worry about whether he is popular for his decision to fight terrorism in Iraq. Bill Clinton took the opposite view. Clinton would check the polls before he acted. The Democrats think they will lose the next election, if there is victory in Iraq, without regard for the countries future safety. The media has a vested interest in keeping the country divided on the issues, so they can make big bucks from political advertisements.
We are thankful Bush has the guts to do the right thing fighting terrorism in Iraq. Thank God we have some
brave heroes willing to protect our freedoms.
This is how Counter Insurgencies end, not with a bang but a whimper. You get the moderate elements of the Insurgency to turn to the Govt side and you kill the hard core elements. Successful Counter Insurgencies always end with a political deal, not a standard military victory.
This is why so many conventional military types, political analysis, and average Americans have such a tough getting a grip on Iraq. Iraq is Limited War, not Total War. It does not work like their Hollywood actions movies tell them war is suppose to work.
Iraq is how most wars are, and will be, waged in the Modern age. We have been spoiled by Gulf War 1 and Kosovo etc to think we can win easily, quickly and painlessly. We can, in a conventional fight. That is why our foes will NOT fight us conventionally.
Ah the Racist label and the Living Wage argument all in one paragraph. Fact is Capitalism is not racist and if anything the fairest form of economics that has ever been tried. You Marxist conservatives should try it sometime.
More races have succeeded under capitalism than any other form. These “slaves” are making 50 times what they would make at home and is why they are sneaking cross the border to become “slaves”. To chase the American/Capitalism dream just like you and me.

We already have laws on the books that allow temporary guest workers for agricultural work. The Senate bill does not change current law in that regard. As far as taking care of the lawn, washing the car, doing the dishes, etc., most of us are capable of doing that ourselves.
First & foremost, there aren't any true savings from employing low-skilled workers. The costs are the same, it's just the hidden social costs are shifted to the public. So, in effect, the so-called $1/head of lettuce is really $10/head if you factor in all other costs.
The biggest con by far are illegal dependent businesses shifting their costs to US.
