LAPD breaks-up immigration standoff
Article Last Updated: 06/23/2007 04:34:10 PM PDT
LOS ANGELES - A coalition of Minutemen and black activists met a larger group of pro-immigrant marchers at a demonstration at Leimert Park today.
Officers, some in riot gear, some in shorts and on bicycles, attempted to separate the two groups, which numbered as many as 500, as they shouted down each other during what was billed as an anti-immigration rally.
At 3:50 p.m., Los Angeles Police officials declared the rally to be an illegal assembly, as its parade permit had expired, and a short time later arrested organizer Ted Hayes, a homeless advocate-turned anti-immigration activist.
LAPD brass earlier had declared a tactical alert to muster enough officers to keep the two sides apart. And police, mindful of the May Day melee at MacArthur Park, carefully told reporters that it was setting up an observation zone at the southern side of the park.
Hayes led an unusual coalition of white Minutemen activists and a small number of blacks demanding reparations for slavery had planned an 11 a.m. march to Leimert Park, and daylong rally.
Hayes had chosen the park, an area known as the cultural center of the African American community of Los Angeles, for a rally he called “Choose Black America -
“Not Amnesty - Not Illegal Immigration.”
The event attracted roughly 500, though police had estimated about 300 total - about 150 for each side, LAPD spokeswoman Norma Eisenman said.
There have been no reports of violence so far, authorities said.
A citywide tactical alert was issued about 1:30 p.m., meaning officers completing their shifts are being kept on overtime in case they are needed to deal with the protest.
Meanwhile, organizers of a march demanding legalization of immigrant workers scheduled for Hollywood on Sunday said they are expecting a crowd of more than 15,000.
The march is being held in anticipation of Tuesday’s Senate debate on immigration reform.
“There is a need for immigrants to be recognized for their work and our main concern is the more than 12 million workers here illegally,” said Raul Murillo, executive director of the Los Angeles chapter of Hermandad Nacional.
“We want recognition for their work and legalization now. We’re asking for the legalization for 12 million workers giving their lives to the United States.”
Participants of the Sunday “Full Rights For Immigrants March and Rally” will begin assembling at Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street around 10 a.m.
The march to the front of the Kodak Theatre, between Highland Avenue and Orange Drive, will begin at noon and is expected to last about an hour, Murillo said.
A plan to overhaul immigration stalled on the Senate floor earlier this month. But different from its predecessor, the latest proposal includes tougher security measures designed to gain conservative support.
The proposed bill includes a mandated $4.4 billion for border security and jail time for foreigners who overstay their visas.
The fate of the bill remains uncertain, however, as opposition builds among conservatives.

The Fiscal Cost of Low-Skill Immigrants to the U.S. Taxpayer
Take the Pledge: "I pledge to never, ever vote for anyone, for any office, who votes in favor of the Mexican Invasion Surrender Bill."
Model letter to your Senator:
To: Your Senator
From: A concerned citizen and constituent
Subject: Urge that you oppose S.1639--vote no on cloture
I urge that you vote no on S.1639 (Immigration Reform,) and vote no on cloture.
Reasons:
1) Granting any form of legal residency to those who illegally crossed our borders is drastically unfair to all those in the wider world who cannot so easily get the same deal for themselves, because they happen to be geographically disadvantaged relative to most of the illegal immigrants who come here. What about those from Asia, Africa and Europe? Should not legal residency in the US be fairly rationed among all the world's peoples?
2) To reward illegal immigrants with the very thing they were trying to achieve when they broke the law is unconscionable: It encourages law breaking in general, and yet more illegal immigration in particular. Criminals must never be granted that which they were seeking when they broke the law--in this case, any form of legal residency in the United States.
3) S. 1639 would have the effect of creating a peasant class of cheap laborers. Although not as bad as our failed experiment with slavery that ultimately ended in a civil war, the moral argument against it is analogous.
4) "Guest worker" programs of the form proposed by S. 1639 are nothing more than an attempt by business to avoid having to pay a living wage to legal US residents.
5) Eisenhower solved the problem much more simply, and for far less money. His solution also exposed the extent to which the problem is corruption in our government, and among our businesspeople. [Reference: http://www.csmonitor.com/2006/0706/p09s01-coop.html]
6) Illegal immigrants are a net financial drain on our economy. The benefits of cheap labor (and cheap food prices) are more than offset by the increased costs for social services and infrastructure. [Reference: http://www.heritage.org/Research/Immigration/sr14.cfm]
7) Current law is not the problem. The problem is lack of enforcement. If the current law cannot be enforced, why would things be any different under S. 1639?
Ted Hayes arrest rally pictures Ping.
Free Ted Hayes !
Pictures like these make me glad I live in a rural area. I would hate to be in a place like that. Sorry. I was out on the bayou fishing. None of that crap for me.
Thank you so much for this post!!! Now that’s the REAL America!! We unite while the other side divides!!!
I see ANSWER was involved with the pro ILLEGALS. I also see that the pro ILLEGALS think the Mexican flag is more important than the AMERICAN flag!
Great job!
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for being there.
LA Answer passed out free T shirts!
Thanks Great pics
Everywhere in the MSM the illegal aliens are called “immigrants”
I’m a REAL immigrant and I hate being used like that...
But I have no voice..
Why do these guys feel the need to hide their faces?
YES! FREE TED HAYES!!! He deserves a voice...HE’S A LEGAL CITIZEN!!!
Why was Ted arrested??
Those pictures tell the whole story!!
Fantastic!
Ted Hayes is a HERO!
Black America could SAVE US if they
stood up like this around the country!
JUST SAY NO to Anti-American Liberalism!
Those are great photos, Ladycalif. It is very interesting seeing Hispanics also holding signs saying that they are against illegal immigration amnesty.
“YES! FREE TED HAYES!!! He deserves a voice...HES A LEGAL CITIZEN!!!”
In downtown L A, that is a net negative!!
I noticed that the pro illegal immigration types in those pictures have different motives unlike the people who are protesting against illegal immigration and amnesty. This shows that the left is not organized with their motives as opposed to us conservatives who are organized with those pictures.
Ted Had a permit to hold a rally in this park in South Central LA. The Mexican Socialist got there first and refused to leave and the LAPD declared OUR assembly unlawful!!!
It was a negotiated arrest. Ted did not want to just leave and we were going to March though the cops and take the park, but they told him we would be arrested, so they agreed to arrest a group of us, and release them without bail.
Hard to see how they could hold him if he had a permit.
