Romney: Attacks On Mormon Religion Troubling
CBS 4 MIAMI ^ | 23 JUNE 2007 | AP

Posted on 06/23/2007 1:28:02 PM PDT by Extremely Extreme Extremist

(AP) SALT LAKE CITY -- Mitt Romney said Saturday that criticism of his Mormon religion by rival GOP presidential campaigns is happening too frequently.

“Clearly, any derogatory comments about anyone’s faith—those comments are troubling. The fact they keep on coming up is even more troubling,” Romney said during a fundraising trip in the home state of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The Mormon church is one of the fastest-growing religions and claims about 12.5 million members worldwide. But many evangelical Christians in crucial primary states such as Iowa and South Carolina consider the faith a cult.

Romney’s remarks follow an apology from GOP rival John McCain’s campaign for comments about the Mormon church allegedly made this year by a volunteer.

Also recently, Republican presidential hopeful, Sen. Sam Brownback of Kansas, issued a similar apology for a campaign worker’s e-mail to Iowa Republican leaders that was an apparent attempt to draw unfavorable scrutiny of Romney’s religion. Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani apologized after the New York Sun noted that a campaign aide had forwarded to a blogger a story about unofficial Mormon lore. Legend has it that a Mormon would save the Constitution, the story said. The campaign aide passed the story along with a note: “Thought you’d find this interesting.”

Romney said in a large presidential race there always will be some volunteers or workers who cannot be controlled. But he said the difference between derogatory comments that originated from the McCain campaign and others is that the Arizona senator has not personally apologized to him.

“In the case of Senator Brownback and Mayor Giuliani ... they called immediately. They each spoke with me personally. I don’t have any issue with that at all,” Romney said.

He said McCain “can do whatever he feels is the right thing. There’s no need for me to suggest how people respond to things that go on in the campaign.”

Tucker Bounds, a McCain campaign spokesman, said the McCain campaign has already apologized.

“It’s a very sincere apology. There is absolutely no place for those type of comments in our campaign,” he said.

Romney, a former governor of Massachusetts, said he had not spoken with McCain since the last presidential debate, on June 5.

Romney used a fundraiser hosted by Utah Jazz owner Larry Miller to criticize the McCain-Feingold campaign finance law. It banned unregulated, unlimited contributions from corporations, unions and wealthy individuals to national political parties and federal candidates.

“The bill ought to be repealed,” he said. “It’s been the wrong course for American campaigns.”

Romney said he favors unlimited donations as long as they are immediately disclosed on the Internet.

Romney was attending fundraisers in Salt Lake City and in Logan on Saturday.

"No. I wouldn’t vote for true-believing Satanist because he justifies an immoral worldview."

Right, and good for you.

Let's talk about polygamy.

It’s cute. Some members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints object to using “Mormons” when referring to “fundamentalist Mormons”. It’s all a matter of definition.

I’m not conserving anything, I am just responding to Rumplestilskin (SP?) when he tried to say that Mormonism never taught people of the pre-existance, or multiple spirit children of Elohim, and how that all leads to me, you, Jesus and SATAN all being brother and sister.

The Mormon church is a false religion, and there is no way you can seperate this belief from the person, epecially when you see just how far off the doctrine is from normalcy.

Mitt Romney is a danger to America just as much as any liberal athiest.

Yeah, but if Romney loses because people come out to vote against him because he’s Mormon, we won’t be able to elevate any of these judges now will we?

You are not making any sense with your scripture reference.

Again Jesus paid taxes to a heathen and a herectic. Jesus supported the Samaritans (the old world equivalent to the Mormons) in their efforts to be recognized politically. Are you acting in contrary to the examples of Jesus?

Oh bye the way, I would have a problem voting for Catholic.

Ed Decker committed adultery and beat his wife. The actual court documents are cited on the web. He is such a liar and idiot that other "anti-Mormons" like Jerald and Sandra Tanner disavowed him and his lies about Mormon belief.

You cut and pasted something from the internet. It must be true!!! /sarc.

Keep posting Saints Alive which was founded by the adulterous wife beater. Most FReepers can see through the obvious lies and it makes Romney (a real family man) look better.

Criticism

Decker's work has attracted criticism not only from Latter-day Saints,[1] but also from religious scholars of other faiths,[2] as well as other critics of the Mormon faith.[3] Decker's former associate, Dick Baer said that, "Ed has a penchant to sensationalize, embellish on facts and center on bizarre issues to try to shock people."(February 25th 1993, Salt Lake Tribune). Jerald and Sandra Tanner and Bob Passantino have said that his writings grossly misrepresent Mormonism, and thereby dilute his message and offend Mormons without attracting them to evangelical Christianity. The Tanners, themselves prominent critics of the LDS Church, have noted what they contend are inaccuracies and errors in some of Decker's works.[4] When Decker was denounced by Jerald and Sandra Tanner, he went so far as to accuse them of being in the pay of the LDS Church and even of being "demonized" themselves. Decker and his associates offered to exorcise the Tanners' demons, and expressed great sadness when they refused.[5]

Critics also point to Decker's first wife's allegations that he was excommunicated for adultery and wife abuse - contrary to his claim that it was due to changes in Decker's religious beliefs.[citation needed] This allegation has been denied by Decker but appears in court documents that he did not dispute at the time of his divorce.[1] Decker has since remarried.

>>The actual Decker excommunication record is on file at Utah State University Special Collections Library [#210]

Actually, Mormons would more liken Joseph Smith to the Apostle Peter, as we believe he held the same position in the church in relation to Jesus Christ. Mohammed denied the divinity of Jesus Christ, and his role as our Savior and Redeemer, therefore Mohammed would be considered an anti-Christ. That’s quite different than someone who accepts Jesus Christ as their Savior and Redeemer and claims to be his spokeman, as was the Apostle Peter.

"You are not making any sense with your scripture reference."

Sure I am, that's the Final Judgment! Revelation 20:14-15.

If you think our Lord is all Sweetness and Light sans Wrath, you've got another thing coming.

Me neither. His religion is his business as is ours. They know he is strong and sincere. They are AFRAID so they attack his religion. Religiphobics!!!!! There’s that word again. Phobia-Fear of something...today is it once again Religion. I dont’ know who I will vote for but it sure won’t be based on anyone’s religion...I made that mistake in 1960 with Kennedy.

>>Let's talk about polygamy.

Typical Lib tactic, switch the topic when you are losing on another point.

You must mean the polygamy St. Augustine and Martin Luther believed when they said it was a Christian practice.

RaceBannon,

What are you talking about???? There was no refutation on your point. You are not even on the same wavelength.

Is your faith or other’s faith so fragile that a Mormon president would shatter it? Please, that is suggest a bogus fear. If like you say, that Mormonism is very easily refutable and illogical, then if you really believe it then it would be very easy to turn people away from it. In fact, you can view it as an opportunity. LOL!

Again, while the theology differs, the moral-political worldview of a typical Mormon is identical to the moral-political worldview a of a typical Evangelical. Discriminating against a Mormon because of his religion in the framework of our Constitutional Democracy is pure bigotry. Plain and simple.

Besides, there is ample proof in the New Testament that a follower of Jesus would support someone politically even if they differ theologically. In fact, there is an entire book in the Old Testament which is dedicated to this idea. Try reading the Book of Ezra. Do you defy the teachings of this book?

>>multiple spirit children of Elohim,'

It is considered bad form here on FR to reference someone in your post without pinging them, as you do to me. So you have changed your line from Jehova to Elohim. At least you are learning. The fact that you made the mistake in the first place tells me that you don't know as mich about my faith as you would like others here on FR to beleive.

The personage of Jehova and Eolhim is a fundamental LDS Doctrine.
