DURHAM - Duke University has reached a settlement with each of the three former lacrosse players and their families. The university made the announcement this afternoon.
According to a press release issued by Duke, the terms of the settlement will not be disclosed.
In a statement, Duke officials said the board of trustees and Duke President Richard Brodhead had determined that it was in the best interests of the Duke community to eliminate the possibility of future litigation and move forward
"This past year has been hard for many people who care about Duke -- for students, faculty, staff, alumni, families and friends -- and for the three students and their families most of all," the Duke statement said. "We resolve to bring the Duke family together again, and to work to protect others from similar injustices in the criminal justice system in the future. "
The players, Dave Evans, Collin Finnerty and Reade Seligmann, also provided a statement.
"Years ago, each of us made a decision to attend Duke because it is one of the greatest universities in the nation," the players stated. "We were drawn to Duke because of its sense of community. The events of the last year tore the Duke community apart, and forcibly separated us from the university we love.
"It is impossible to fully describe what we, our families and team endured. As we said from day one, we are innocent. But it took three-hundred and ninety-four days, and the intervention of the North Carolina Attorney General, before our innocence was formally declared. ...We hope that today's resolution will begin to bring the Duke family back together again, and we look forward to working with the University to develop and implement initiatives that will prevent similar injustices and ensure that the lessons of the last year are never forgotten."
How soon will the terms of the settlement leak out? I’d like to know the amount.
I think often the injured parties in such cases are too quick to settle.
From what I understand they were rich already so they probably just wanted it behind them so they could get on with their lives.
I was thinking that there probably would be plenty of race mongers that would state that her accusation was STILL true -
like Sharpton STILL insists that Tawana Brawley was raped.
Yep, that’s what happens when a group of self-absorbed “elite” jackasses step out of the lecture hall, thinking they can do & say in the real world the bizarre things they do in their cocooned academic world.
Burn the SOB’s.
Yes, WE aren’t the injured parties in this matter,
but we sure would like to see those GD Elitist Leftists “get theirs” for doing exactly what GD Elitist Leftists do.
They will. We may never know, but they will.
“I’m a lawyer, and I wouldn’t wish litigation on an individual plaintiff or defendant except as the very last resort.”
Especially suing a college like Duke. Would be interesting to know the amount of the settlement.
Interesting comments made by Roy Black. I think it will be awhile before the boys even think about getting on with their lives. Greta of course will take hers off the top.
Mgnum, Black said, is the beginning of the entire case and she at least needs to take a deposition so lawyers can go through all her false statements and contradictions.
“That’s the basis of your case,” he said. “Then you bring in Nifong. You bring in the lab that manipulated the results, all the police detectives, the state of North Carolina. I’d bring in Duke University. I’d bring in anybody within 10 miles of that prosecution.”

fire the 88
I don’t think her primary motivation was that she is racist, though that may be part of the equation.
The primary motivation is that she’s a schizoid nutcase, and incompetent.
She needs some consequences, but she’d probably get off on a mental illness technicality.
The N.C. State’s Attorney has essentially stated that she doesn’t appear competent to stand trial; or, at least, that she isn’t competent enough to prove criminal intent.
The boys settled too cheap, it appears.
Billable hours, bullable hours, billable hours.
“schizoid nutcase, and incompetent”
The what the heck is she doing with kid/s? They need to take them out of her supervision.
Wasn’t that coach the real hero in all this? I just admired him so much. He helped that team deal with it, too. He should be offered a job as President of the University, and the 88 should be looking for Real Jobs.
From what I understand they were rich already so they probably just wanted it behind them so they could get on with their lives.
There is a seldom-considered aspect of this. A settlement gets them money now. While they might get a lot more later, it would be much later, years can stretch into decades as Duke uses its free, in-house law department to delay as long as possible.
Given that the players parents probably borrowed a lot of the money for legal fees, the interest they save by paying them off now is enormous.
Plus, they are wealthy people, they can invest anything left over from the settlement and end up with much more in a decade.
Thanks, but don’t think those 88 morons will get fired or anything ... not even a “letter” in their file ...
Cool .....
Hmmm ... my understanding is that Duke fired him just about the same time they suspended the players .... from what I got from the MSM .... but then ......
It is no more dead than any fundament of reality can be. The tides of human fashion wave in and out, the march of folly never exhausts.
"In Loco Parentis" could be worked in many ways in this case. The absence of attention by the faculty and the administration to it are, I think, full of torts both before and after the Bad Night of the Strippers.
