I think often the injured parties in such cases are too quick to settle.

From what I understand they were rich already so they probably just wanted it behind them so they could get on with their lives.

There is a seldom-considered aspect of this. A settlement gets them money now. While they might get a lot more later, it would be much later, years can stretch into decades as Duke uses its free, in-house law department to delay as long as possible.

Given that the players parents probably borrowed a lot of the money for legal fees, the interest they save by paying them off now is enormous.

Plus, they are wealthy people, they can invest anything left over from the settlement and end up with much more in a decade.
