PHOENIX - A man who coated a 3-week-old puppy in cooking oil and then fed it to his pet boa constrictor was sentenced Thursday to 90 days in jail and two years probation, prosecutors said.
Joseph Beadle, 40, pleaded guilty to an animal cruelty charge in March. He has served 51 days of his jail sentence while the case was pending.
Beadle, of Glendale, faced up to a year in jail on the charge.
Police reports said Beadle fed the mixed-breed puppy to the 8-foot-long snake last June as two 15-year-old boys watched. He poured the cooking oil on the dog so it would be easier for the snake to swallow.
Investigators seized his snake after finding it was the victim of neglect.
"The County Attorneys Office has made prosecuting animal-cruelty cases a high priority," Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas said in a statement. "Experience and empirical evidence have shown that people who commit cruelty to animals are more likely to commit crimes against people."

I wish our cat would kill baby bunnies, also wish he would kill chipmunks. The rabbits ruin the garden an our young fruit trees, and the darn chipmunks dig up our bulbs to munch.
Beadle will enjoy serving the remaining {{{HOT}}} days of his jail sentence at Sheriff Joe’s Desert Inn. LOL
Feet first?
Not trying to be incendiary, here, but in the above sense, could you define “helpless”? Are blind, baby mice helpless?
No, no, no! That ain’t right!
...he should have sauteed the little fella first...
LOL, stir that pot .....
“The Cat’s Diary”
Day 743:
Today my attempt to kill my captors by weaving around their feet while they were walking almost succeeded. Must try this at the top of the stairs.
In an attempt to disgust and repulse these vile oppressors, I once again induced myself to vomit on their favorite chair. Tomorrow I will try this on their bed.
Day 744:
My captors continue to torment me with bizarre dangling objects. They eat lavish meals in my presence while I am forced to subsist on dry cereal. The only thing that keeps me going is the hope of eventual escape — that, and the satisfaction I get from occasionally ruining some piece of their furniture.
I fear I may be going insane. Yesterday, I ate a houseplant. Tomorrow I may eat another.
Day 745:
Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet.
I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates my capabilities.
However, they merely made condescending comments about what a good little hunter I am. Bastards!
There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However, I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of allergies. I must learn what this means, and how to use it to my advantage.
Day 746:
Slept all day so that I could annoy my captors with sleep depriving, incessant pleas for food at ungodly hours of the night.
Day 747:
I am finally aware of how sadistic they are. For no good reason I was chosen for the water torture. This time however it included a burning foamy chemical called “shampoo.” What sick minds could invent such a liquid. My only consolation is the piece of thumb still stuck between my teeth.
I’m thinking kittens ought to be fair game. Otherwise they’ll just grow into cats.
Is he guilty of cruelty to animals, or cruelty to dog lovers?
I see no difference between feeding rodents to snakes and feeding dogs to snakes.
This guy is going down because people who think dogs are people are railroading him.
“Cats regard people as their underlings.”
If they were bigger than us they’d regard us as food. No doubt they’d play with us a long time, torture us, before actually killing us. I see my daughters’ cats do that all the time to the critters they catch, and I just know if those “cute little kitties” were big enough they’d do the same to us.
Very good point!
i once watched a “friend” of mine many years ago, feed a mouse to his boa and thought it was disgusting. had he fed this snake a dog i would have done him great bodily harm. he didn’t remain a friend very long. dogs are and always have been pets and have given us love and companionship sometimes when we don’t deserve it. they don’t deserve to be used as food for snakes. snakes would use us as food if they could and sometimes are reported to just that.
I agree. I don’t agree with what he did. I have animals myself and love them. However, in the end, it’s a dog, not a human being. A fine would have been punishment enough. I don’t belive in jail time for anything a human does to an animal, no matter how bad. It doesn’t mean I like it.
Perhaps that depends upon your perspective. Generally, I think dogs are ok. But I wonder how many people have been menaced by man’s best friends while taking a stroll in the neighborhood, or riding a bike down a country lane. We don’t even have to go into the whole pit bull thing. Man’s best friend? Maybe, maybe not.
Well, that’s not EXACTLY what I said. If this guy was using animals as food for others (as happens in nature), that’s fine, as long as the animal suffers.
What I take issue with is your statement of, “I dont belive in jail time for anything a human does to an animal, no matter how bad.” That I have disagree with most strongly.
CRUELTY towards animals is one gauge of one’s depravity towards HUMAN life. If you’re sadistic enough to put a kitten on a BBQ (as recently happened) or throw someone’s dog into traffic in a case of road rage (which happened in CA a few years back) then you deserve to be punished.
But feeding an animal to another? Nah, as long as the eaten animal isn’t suffering needlessly, then I really don’t see a big deal about it.
Whoa—correction to my previous post, first line:
As long as the animal DOESN’T suffer.
