Sen. Graham on 'Today': Working With Dems Even More Important Than Immigration Bill
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

Does Lindsey Graham truly believe that his highest calling as a senator is to work with the likes of Ted Kennedy? Apparently so, judging by the South Carolinian's statement on this morning's "Today." Meredith Vieira interviewed Graham, a staunch supporter of the president's immigration plan, during the show's first half-hour.

TODAY CO-HOST MEREDITH VIEIRA: When you went home recently you were at a GOP meeting and you got booed over immigration. There are a lot of people in a lot of states -- conservatives -- who think this bill is bad and they see this as a litmus test.

SEN. LINDSEY GRAHAM [R-S.C.]: Well here's what I believe. This is a bill that's a million per cent better than the current system. I mentioned working with Ted Kennedy and I got booed. The lady in your piece earlier said no compromise. I'm a Republican conservative who believes my country is at risk by not solving immigration. I'm a member of the United States Senate who believes it's my job to work with Democrats to do hard things. This is no longer about immigration. Can your Congress, can your Senate, come together to do things that one party can't do itself? I think the answer is yes.
Graham's statement is a perfect illustration of why so few senators ever get elected president. They become infatuated with process, with working with "my friend, the distinguished senator from the great state of" blah, blah, blah. Of course there are times when compromise is required. But, above all, senators are sent to Washington not to work with the other side but to fight for their principles. This is not a case of working with Ted Kennedy to do a "hard" thing -- it's working with him to do a bad thing.

Actually, what Pansy Graham had to say differs little from what Fred Thompson had to say in his first few public speaking engagements after his trial balloon went up. This is how folks from the Howard Baker, John McCain, Lamar Alexander, Chuck Hagel, Fred Thompson, wing of the party think and talk.

"You will have your bipartisanship." - Fred Thompson, May 4, 2007, Orange County, CA Lincoln Club speech

Sad to say but, ain't that the truth in every state! A few years ago during his campaign for reelection, my POS congressman Bob Etheridge(D)called my home to win my vote. All he wanted to talk about was what he was doing for the state of North Carolina especially his district, even though he's paid by the federal government to pass laws in the best interest of the people of the United States. Maybe we need to open up the elections nation wide so these scum sucking vermin quit sending money back home. We are being held hostage by Fiscal Terrorists.

Lindsey ought’a go for broke and opt for the sex change...

LOL! I'd be happy if he'd just get it over with and switch party's. Blackbird.

"Its my job to help pass Ted Kennedy's agenda." Must be the new conservatism. BARF! Count me out, Lindsay Graham!

Why do people in South Carolina keep voting for this man?

Ever hear the mantra "he's the lesser of two evils"? That's what you get when that's what you're pickin' between. An evil result.

Are you saying that only wealthy people have a right to have an opinion on immigration? If so, what is your definition of "wealthy"?

Do you refuse to acknowledge that there are non-monetary considerations at issue?

???

I'm saying that everybody has the right to an opinion...and that I will be proven correct on the immigration bill while many anti-immigration bill proponents are going to be sorely disappointed.

Believe me, we are so upset with this guy. He campaigned as a conservative and has been anything BUT. There are a couple of names being bandied about already to run against Sen. Graham.

While he bends over backwards to “get along”, the Dems would have no angst about stabbing him in the back if it suited their agenda.

The funny thing is, is that Democrats aren't going to support his re-election. They're going to run a candidate against him, and without conservative support Graham is finished. Just like when Democrats picked off Lincoln Chaffee's seat and Chaffee still blamed Bush and the GOP for his defeat. These RINOs truly don't get it that they're being played for fools.

Let’s repeal the 17th Amendment. Then the people can wash their hands of the Senate altogether.

I see this topic every so often on Free Republic, and I cannot figure why. Why do you want the notoriously corrupt legislature of South Carolina (e.g., Operation Lost Trust with 28 legislators arrested for corruption) to choose the senators for the state? It would certainly guarantee an officeholder like Senator Graham a permanent seat, since he could easily do enough logrolling to ensure that he could permanently retain the seat.

The history of the senate prior to direct election by the citizens certainly doesn't lead me to think that repealing the 17th Amendment would be a good idea. Of all of the constitutional reforms introduced in that short span of years, it's the only one that I think is an unqualified success.

Amen! As Duncan Hunter said, we need to distance ourselves from the Ted Kennedy wing of the Republican Party.

Lindsey Graham must have some personal skeletons in his closet that he wants the media to keep hidden.

Having the senators responsible to the legislatures instead of the RNC would be an improvement...especially if they were subject to an immediate recall when the Senator gets as far out of line as Graham has.
