“Term limits are good, but on the other hand, sometimes you find someone who actually gets it.”

And if they get it, then they better make sure the voters know. If the voters know that they “get it”, there should be no problem getting themselves re-elected. Would you agree?

“But when someone goes over the line, it wouldn’t be bad if it were possible to fire them right away.”

Recall or prosecution. If nothing else, view the term limits as an incentive for the elected official to stay in line.

You’re in an emotional state about this. Read the bill, or at least descriptions of what’s in it.
It *isn’t* amnesty, and it is the best attempt to sort out the people we want from the ones we don’t than we’ve ever had. And for sure, it is a far better bill than we’d ever get with a Dem Pres and a Dem Congress.

Turn off Conservative talk radio for a few days and read the bill. Your opinion would change.

1 Border security.

2.Guest worker program (not inked to amnesty or a pathway to citizenship). If you overstay your work visa by 30 days you face immediate repatriation to your country of origin and will not be granted another work visa for a period of five years.

3. Fix the legal emigration problems leading to a back log. Have a point system based system that benefits the US

4. Create new status for illegals already here.
a. they have 60 days to report and register, after the 60 days if they will not register they will be repatriated to their country of origin.
b. New Status will allow them to get at the END of the legal emigration line and apply for new type of visa. This visa will allow them legal residency for 5 years. No voting rights. Visa will be reviewed every 5 years. Any felonies commited by holder of this new visa will result in immediate repatriation to their country of origin. No government assistance will be paid to them until they have worked in the US for a minimum of 15 years. Limited assistance there after for catastrophic ocurrences only.

With the exception of a few minor details (like time limits on registering - you're far more generous with time limits than this bill is), what's different between what you want and what the bill does?
Did you get your objections from reading about the bill, or from the hysteria of talk radio?

I am wondering just how anyone thinks this is going to solve the illegal immigration problem?

There's a good answer to that (actually, two good answers). The primary one is that employers will be given significant fines (and maybe even jail terms) if they don't verify that all their employees have legal status. They will have a way to do that, so there won't be any excuses. If the jobs go away, so will most of the illegals.

The other answer is that law enforcement (police and the like) will be able to ask for immigration status of anyone they detain. In many states they can't do that now.

A third answer is that illegals won't be able to get welfare - emergency medical care only.

That's all a major start to solving the problem.

I broke it up into three sections.

1. Border security first. A-hole Lott already declared today he would gut any amendments of actual border security measures during conference. He openly bragged about it.

2.My proposal of guest worker program is not automatically linked to a “pathway to citizenship”.......get it?

NO automatic “pathway to citizenship”!!!!!!! A no brainer. No compelling reason to join the two.

3.No “instant” Z visas. None.

4. Thorough background checks for all applicants.

5. Any illegals wanting to emigrate must get at the back of the line. We have a LEGAL means to emigrate to the US. USE it!
They can then only get 5 year legal residency visas. Must be reviewed every 5 years. No voting rights, Never. That is their “amnesty”.

My “objections” are drawn from common sense. I do not listen to talk radio, the steel roof in my shop prevents radio reception from all but the local “classic rock” blather. I do not listen to Rush or any of the other so called conservatives.

What do you mean by "border security"? Building a fence along the Mexican border is expensive, and not effective. Most illegal immigrants simply overstay visas; other come over the Canadian border, through ports, or just land a floating creation on the coast. IMO, that fence is a colossal waste of money, never mind the impact on the environment or the livelihoods of the people who live on the US side.

2.My proposal of guest worker program is not automatically linked to a “pathway to citizenship”.......get it?
NO automatic “pathway to citizenship”!!!!!!! A no brainer. No compelling reason to join the two.

Exactly. And the bill says explicitly that guest workers don't have a path to citizenship.

3.No “instant” Z visas. None.

And there aren't any. This is the most misunderstood part of the bill. People who have been here for years and can prove that they've been continually working can apply for a Z visa. If they don't have a criminal record (easily verified), they can get probationary status, and have their Z visa application processed. They can stay until the visa is processed.
And the length of time that will take is the issue many have. It's not clear that those will happen in a timely manner.

4. Thorough background checks for all applicants.

Yes, that's in the bill.

5. Any illegals wanting to emigrate must get at the back of the line.

Yes, that's also part of the bill (I assume you mean immigrate). The estimate is that it would take 10-14 years for someone currently illegal to get consideration for citizenship.

Read the bill - or at least accurate representations of what it is. It's got everything you say you want, except the huge fence, and I really think you should rethink that. That's an emotional item, not a rational one.

If I were in an emotional state about this, I wouldn't be typing on this forum to you.  I have read the bill, and I have it bookmarked at the 2007 Amnesty Bill.  Uncle Sam provides a nice easy to read copy right here online at:

http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c110:S.1348:

get a printable PDF copy here:

GPO's PDF Display

It *isn’t* amnesty, and it is the best attempt to sort out the people we want from the ones we don’t than we’ve ever had.

I've got copies of my ancestor's pension paperwork from the Civil War.  Don't try to kid me that our government doesn't have both the ability and resources right here and right now to sort out who shouldn't be here.  That argument doesn't even hold a drop of mist.  It's a pathetic attempt to appease legislation that dissolves our national sovereignty.  Western Europe is and has been dissolving as we speak.  Why in the hell would anyone knowing and seeing this, support this garbage?

And for sure, it is a far better bill than we’d ever get with a Dem Pres and a Dem Congress.

I'll negotiate for a higher percentage tax refund.  I'll negotiate for a better deal on an interest rate.  I won't negotiate on what the Founding Fathers created.  You sound like a politician when you say "it's better than...".  This is not a Republican/Democrat issue.  This is a Patriotic issue, and if the President wants to burn my flag and cede our territory on his watch, I'll exercise my right to speak emotionally.

Turn off Conservative talk radio for a few days and read the bill. Your opinion would change.

I listen to Mark Levin as often as I can.  Beyond that, I don't listen to talk radio.  Since you gave me a suggestion, I'll give you one.  Expect more from your elected officials.  They usually don't give much more than is expected of them, as is with most people.

Got it. I occasionally listen to him. He's nuts on this issue. :-)
Your links didn't work for me, but I have read other places about the bill.
Mark & Sean are really hysterical over the issue. I think some of Rush's friends got to him, because he's stopped using the "amnesty" mantra and started saying "how can we trust the gov't to work effectively". That's a more valid question. IOW, he found out what the bill says. I don't think Mark or Sean has bothered.

"What reason are they giving for having made the conscious decision to choose to now begin enforcing the laws?" They have NOT chosen to enforce any laws - only to enact new ones to ignore

“What do you mean by “border security”? Building a fence along the Mexican border is expensive, and not effective.”

Wrong. Where the wall has been erected it has worked successfully. Illegals shift to where there is no wall to cross. Tax the 25+ billion sent back to Messico electronically by Western Union ETC.... building the wall will not cost the American taxpayer a dime.

“Most illegal immigrants simply overstay visas; other come over the Canadian border,”

Almost too stupid to respond to your assertion. Statistically insignificant amount of illegals walk over northern border per week...as opposed to 6000+ strolling over southern borders each week.

“never mind the impact on the environment “

Too stupid to respond too...I’ll give it a shot...been to Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument near Phoenix lately?
I rest my case.

“Exactly. And the bill says explicitly that guest workers don’t have a path to citizenship.”

They do, Z visa......read the bill.

“And there aren’t any. This is the most misunderstood part of the bill. People who have been here for years and can prove that they’ve been continually working can apply for a Z visa. If they don’t have a criminal record (easily verified), they can get probationary status, and have their Z visa application processed. They can stay until the visa is processed.”

Background checks been stripped from the bill, easily contested in 72 hours, Z visa granted....bingo! Amnesty.

4. Thorough background checks for all applicants.

“Yes, that’s in the bill. “

Nope, been stripped from the bill, once contested, z visa is given....”pathway to citizenship....amnesty.

5. Any illegals wanting to emigrate must get at the back of the line.

No, I do not mean immigrate....proper term is emigrate. One does not “immigrate” to another country..use a dictionary.

Unless everything pertaining to the bullshit Z visa status has been removed from this bill since I posted a few hours ago, they do NOT have to get at the end of the line.

LOL! Yeah, right. Keep telling yourself that.

As soon as the bill is signed, illegals become legal. They get to stay here, have no consequences for being here illegally, and have access to ALL of our social services along with citizenship down the road if they desire. And no fear of ever being deported. That's amnesty.

Is the ridiculous '24 hour' background check still in there? It took my husband about 6 weeks to get his passport - with having had an old passport and all the other documentation up to date. And they think the gov. can do background checks in ONE day?
