LOL

I did notice the sarcasm but didn’t want to ruin the fun. Thanks.

“There’s really minimal accountability.”

Bingo!

I think the election cycles are fine, but I absolutely support term limits. We the voters don’t have time to stay interested because we’re too busy paying taxes first and our light bill last. People don’t have time to get interested because they’re too busy just trying to save up, out of fear of a collapsed retirement system not being there to catch them.

I’ve often thought about why voters don’t take the time to get, and most importantly...”stay” interested (shaking head)

“I didn’t miss it, the Burkean principles of representation are assumed.”

I was hoping so... When I have time, I’ll go look that word up ;) lol

Term limits are good, but on the other hand, sometimes you find someone who actually gets it.

I wouldn’t want to give up Senator Mitch McConnell. No, I am not from Kentucky, but I appreciate it when he Mitchslaps Harry Reid. He does it as no one else can.

But when someone goes over the line, it wouldn’t be bad if it were possible to fire them right away.

LOL Edmund Burke - he put forth the idea that the representative doesn’t seek explicit instructions from you but that he represents you and thus is charged with the responsibility of acting on your behalf. Thereby meaning representative democracy, not like one drunken brawl ridden town meeting (LOL so they tell me)

I agree - it used to be called oversight, and good men and women used to apply it with gusto.

I don't know how we can do that if our own leadership won't step up to the plate.

The question now is, why won't they?
Speculation time (and there folks for more learned in this than I);

The phrase, entangling treaties come to mind, but on a smaller scale. Our senators and representatives are so tangled up with special interests, agreements and deals with each other for pork and just down right corruption to be "throwing stones in glass houses" at those who cross the line. If they try to prosecute, they end up prosecuted.

Simply put, they are NOT on our side any more, they're on their side.

How do you fix that.(open question)

I've hear of him. That is a socialist concept. We fell for that? or was it shoved down out throats?

I really think the beginning was when Newt was pressured to resign. There are good things about Newt, and as another FReeper said, there are things that you wish you didn’t know about him. The worst was that he didn’t lead well enough that there would be the resolve to hold the conservative line.

Suddenly conservative members of Congress were afraid. Oh, a few stood firm, but not many. The Senate, well it is what it is. Lately it had been more volatile than it had been historically so that the Senators may have more risk in keeping their jobs, except for the two goons from MA. I can only think that they get reelected so that they will stay away.

We may be better at not governing. PJ O’Rourke said that Republicans campaign that government doesn’t work and they win and then they prove it, while Democrats campaign that they will take care of everything.

I am not suggesting dropping out, I am just observing that the grandeur gets to some in the House and the Senate.

Bwhahahaha.I am laughing because Dame Agatha Christie was a conservative Burkean.

No it’s not socialist, trust me. I don’t live that way, but some do. It’s actually saying you were hired to make decisions so make the. He believed that reps were accountable in the elections.

It just has that "collectivism" ring to it - you elected us to do this but we know whats good for you thinking.

Burke was defining judicial review, but for elective office.

Oh I agree that it’s sounding like being tone deaf, but it’s only a theory and it doesn’t necessarily represent reality.

He lived in the eighteenth century— it was a different world. I think it’s a good thing to take into account that the literacy rates were lower and the mucky mucks read to those who worked for them and made interpretation of the information. Once literacy increased, then the ability of the elites to think for the non luxury clad classes was eliminated.

Eric Hoffer noted that this elitism about information permeated the print and television news reporting and lamented that he would never live to see a liberation of the rest of the population relative to news reporting and interpretation. That’s true, he is long gone, but we did live to see it— by the internet and specifically blogs.
