In a perfect world, it might be reasonable to say that everyone here illegally should be deported. Law breaking, obviously, cannot be ignored. But if that were possible at all - which is very dubious - the cost would run far into the billions.

How about we take 100 yards from the border into the U.S. and we mine it. I'm willing to write a check for a few landmines. Would be a better spend of my money than what they use taxes for, and I would even consider it an investment given the costs that will skyrocket from all the new people that need a handout.

A good piece. One thing that stuck out to me is this paragraph:

Over time, illegal immigrants would have to pay fines and fees of more than $9,000 (plus thousands more for each family member). They’d have to prove they’re working and have no significant criminal record. They’d have to learn English and American civics. And, if they want legal permanent residence, they’d have to return to their home country to apply for it there. Getting a green card would take at least eight years, citizenship at least 13.

I am wondering just how anyone thinks this is going to solve the illegal immigration problem? Most of the illegals have to keep a low profile so I have to assume they are working for minimum wages (And, probably not even that if they're paid by cash so that they're not caught). Just who thinks these people will be able to afford these fines? And, then for family members?

Does anyone really believe that they're going to sign up to pay these fines? And, if they're criminals, they're going to fess up?

And, how, if Immigration and Homeland Security can't keep track of them now, do they think they'll find those illegals who refuse to step up and fess up? What are they going to do to THEM, then?

Nope, sorry, I don't buy it. If they (illegals) wanted to do it legally, they'd have gone through the legal channels in the first place.

Take a look at this:

Lott says “Oh, don’t worry about all these silly enforcement first amendments, I’ll make sure I make the bill meaningless in conference”!!!!

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1849462/posts

This is why Bush and the other useless morons like Gonzales and Chertoff can get away with NOT enforcing the law. Lott is going to strip enforcement out of the bill.

There’s so much infrastructure working against identification, processing and deporting, it’s worth a look at the incentives.

We’d talked a lot about businesses, but it’s also a big deal to look at government benefits. If it’s payable to US citizens, someone in some level of government is going to abuse the system to pay it to illegals, as we saw in MA when former Governor Dukakis ordered social security numbers for illegal aliens and in ME, state gov’ts are working deliberately to provide government benefits to illegal aliens.

Don’t even get me started on the judges.

Good!

Cause anything short of telling them to go home and get in line, is unacceptable.

but, guess what’s at stake?

this:

excerpt.....”Last year, Mexican migrants sent home more than $20 billion in remittances....”

I don’t have a problem with LEGAL migrant workers sending back $$ to ma and pa. I DO have a problem with a single illegal alien not being deported.

Well, bump for irrelevant link then :) Thanks for pointing that out.

I certainly don't believe it for one second.

This is a give away. It's like someone hung a sign out that said "America, Ready for Gutting".

I am trying to see who didn’t answer whom?

I’d understood from post 500 that the question was prove that enforcement is credible, which I’d mentioned Moose4’s answer several times in this thread and also noted, but can’t recall which thread, that the R’s (other than Lott) are seeking more assurances of enforcement.

But separating into two bills is a possibility if enough R’s and a few D’s can agree.

Building fences is beyond our Govt’s ability.
Too technical.
Too complex.
We can’t afford such a massive project.

NO

A new bill is NOT necessary.

I mean I whole heartedly disagree with you on this point.
