Bigotry always is sinful, even if the target are 'illegal'

Bigotry never goes away. When it becomes unfashionable, it goes underground and waits until a new hate group appears into which it can project its twisted sickness.
Racism, anti-Semitism, anti-Catholicism and anti-immigrant nativism are chronic infections in the American body politic. Rush Limbaugh singing his obscene tune "Barack the Magic Negro" is inviting prejudice and violence.
However, for pure irrational rage, the current crop of nativists are some of the worst to come along since the Ku Klux Klan of the 1920s or those God-fearing Protestants who burned convents in Boston in the 19th century.

anti-CatholicismIn reality, Greeley worries about his pet group, the coolish-to-lukewarm Catholics, who will vote for abortion rights.
Greeley doesn't worry about seriously committed Catholics.

This article is a disgrace. I don’t know anyone who has a problem with legal immigrants. It’s not right to give these foreign criminals a path to citizenship.

So, did you post this article just to start some ......S@#T? Wake up and smell the tequila. People who are against Illegal Immigration are NOT the KKK. They are average AMERICANS who fear for their kids and grandkids future. Get over it and put the *race card* back in the deck. He also seems to have no respect for America's laws or sovereignty. He wants to reward criminal behavior. That is what every last illegal is: a criminal.

I object to the term “illegal immigrants.” They are not immigrants, they have made no effort to be legal. They have climbed over or under fences and eluded the border patrol. Lets call them what they are, INVADERS.

Thanks for the reminder. I needed it.
An accurate term is illegal aliens.

The author has once again proven that the ability to write in English doesn’t mean you understand at all what you’re writing about.

Greeley doesn't care about that commandment. For all his pretense of being an important philospher, he can't handle thinking about complex issues, without jumping immediately to his own favorite, self-determined conclusions. Sadly his views on this illegal invasion seem to have permeated even the GOP, from the top down. I think they should end 'foreclosures' because a person can't afford their mortgage, and while they are in the mind to alter and ignore laws, how about make it a if you choose pay your taxes as a 'charitable' donation. Obviously crime does pay so long as the crime becomes religiously sanctioned as 'compassionate' by the buyers and sellers of cheap labor. And here I thought that 'slave' labor was against humanity!!! (partial sarcasm)
To: B. Chezwick
I’m actually surprised to hear this coming from Greeley. His most recent book actually was an attempt to study the views of religious conservatives from an objective sociological point of view, and it seemed fair to me. He cut down a lot of negative stereotypes. But here he’s sounding like a Pelosi speechwriter.

Yes, bigotry IS always sinful. Opposition to criminal acts, however is NOT bigotry and NOT sinful.

I would also add that opposition to sinful acts is NOT bigotry.

There is a popular post-modern notion that all law is simply a way for an in-group to control an out-group, and you seem to have bought into that idea. You apparently can't believe that anyone would support the rule of law as a matter of principle, so opposition to illegal immigration must be based on something other than a respect for the rule of law, i.e., racism.
It would also seem to follow that you reject the legitimacy of the idea of national borders and national sovereignty, and of the right of governments to exert some control over the influx of foreign nationals across their borders.
You also seem to support the idea - based upon obscure criteria that you've failed to define - that we can pick and choose which laws we will enforce. One of your criteria seems to be that if criminals attend mass on Sunday, their crimes can be ignored.

Good post. As you said, legal immigrants and the working poor are the ones who are harmed the most by this illegal invasion.
