'Hate Crimes' and Double Standards
National Journal ^ | 5/29/07 | Stuart Taylor

Posted on 05/30/2007 8:51:27 PM PDT by AmericanExceptionalist

Consider three criminal cases.

No. 1: Christopher Newsom and his girlfriend, Channon Christian, both students at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, were carjacked while on a dinner date in January, repeatedly raped (both of them), tortured, and killed. His burned body was found near a railroad track. Hers was stuffed into a trash can. Five suspects have been charged. The crimes were interracial.

No. 2: Three white Duke lacrosse players were accused in March 2006 of beating, kicking, choking, and gang-raping an African-American stripper, while pelting her with racial epithets, during a team party.

No. 3: Sam Hays bumped against Mike Martin in a crowded bar, spilling beer on Martin's "gay pride" sweatshirt. Martin yelled, "You stupid bastard, I should kick your ass." Hays muttered, "You damned queer" and threw a punch, bloodying Martin's lip.

Now the quiz.

Stuart Taylor is a centrist--perhaps slightly center-left--but he is a trenchant thinker, and calls the shots as he sees them. No one will ever accuse him of being reliably in the liberals' camp.

This expose of "hate-crime" legislation is an excellent piece, in my opinion.

I have been the victim of several “hate crimes” against myself because of my van that says, “Jesus Loves You” on the side. Including one where they came to my house and burned the van in the driveway, and put pro-homosexual slogans in spray paint on all the available areas they could. (On stonewall jackson riot night to boot.)

Accompanying these events were also death threats that were made about me and my family by these same individuals on the public airwaves. How did the police handle this? They tried to yell at me into not reporting it as “hate” crime. I didn’t want to anyway, but that it was one of the few “anti=christian” hate crimes in Fairfax Co. to that date and i wanted it to be registered as such.

If it hadn’t been for the governor (Jim Gilmore’s) intervention the county would have let it go as a simple vandalism. He forced them to deal with it as it was, an anti-christian hate crime. However, they showed little desire to resolve it and did little to investigate other than to make me sound like an idiot for putting that on my van.

Im against hate crime legislation completely because it will never be fairly adjudicated.

I have some bad news, my FRiend. The double standard in hate crimes legislation, and the disproportionate coverage by the news media of crimes against selected demographic groups (as Taylor has pointed out), aren’t even really newsworthy. We’ve become accustomed to this sort of thing in America. Sad but true.

"I'm against hate crime legislation completely because it will never be fairly adjudicated."

So you are all for it if it benefits you?

There should be no such thing as a "hate crime" statute. To support one is a mild form of insanity.

Naturally, that insanity might induce one to commit a "hate crime".

The Christian-Newsom murders will never be known the way Matthew Shepherd’s murder or Byrd’s dragging death have been.

CNN ridiculed the notion that this was a hate crime and has tried to spin the issue to say that it is RACISTS on the internet who’ve blown it out of proportion.

It isn’t insanity, it is a form of politically correct despotism. It establishes unequal protection under the law as some groups are considered “more equal” than others.

Sexual beliefs are protected but political beliefs are not. Liberal positions trump conservative positions in all areas.

It is just a means of criminalizing conservative thought.

We have pushes to criminalize light bulbs (in addition to laws against “the wrong” type of toilet). Don’t think that denying the religion of man-made global warming won’t get you sent to the gulag.

Companies already force employees to undergo “diversity training” as a means of poltiical re-education. Those who say the wrong thing go to “rehab”.

But such “outrage” is not vented on those who have the right positions on certain issues. Bill Clinton’s activites as a sexual harasser and serial rapist were given a pass by NOW because he supported abortion (and why WOULDN’T an adulterer want to be able to hide the evidence?).

Bonus question: Why have the interracial rape-torture-murders in Knoxville been completely ignored by the same national media that clamor for more laws to stop hate crimes

Because in Islam this is permissible and this country doesn't want to get involved with prosecuting muslims.

Thats bloody awful, did you ever think about getting a few lads together to deal with these obnoxious pervs ? This would never happen where I live, they have to keep their heads down.
Is that Fairfax in Virginia ? My Uncle lived in VA for nearly 30 years and I don’t think this nonsense would have been tolerated then. Sounds like things have gone downhill.
Finally don’t worry too much about the threats - remember these are only half-men not men like you and me, I’ve met these types before, believe me, terrorise them back and they kack their pants !
Don’t let your family feel down.

Good Luck mate, Let me know how you get on.

If you work for The Walt Disney Company, you'll find yourself out of a job.

Tell me thats not true.
The guy across the road from me took his wife and sprogs to Disneyland. For a lot of people round here a holiday in the States is like a trip to the moon, but you can get a flight to Orlando for as little as 600 dollars. This neighbour went in 2004 and had a mental time, apparently, this creepy training stuff must have been introduced since.

So the Social-Engineering do-gooders cant even leave a kiddies holiday centre alone.
Makes you want to yack your dinner up doesn’t it ?

No. Emphatic No. Read what I said before you run off at the mouth on what you think I said. I am against them because I don’t think that there will ever be a way that they can be equally adjudicated. Period. Not because they didn’t benefit me.

The fact that they didn’t work to prosecute or indict someone clearly easily found who commited a “hate crime” against me for being a christian, showed me that these crimes were only going to be prosecuted if they were agaisnst those who had favored status in the usa.

Next time, try reading before leaping.

Not all hate crimes equal in the media
John Kass

June 13, 2007

“Revs. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton appear to carry the story forward. They know their roles and play them well. The cameras click. Editors dispatch think pieces on race in America. TV talking heads offer commentary and what are called “town meetings” and “national conversations on race.” Special-interest advocates use the media time to argue for racial preferences in academic admissions and hiring. Politicians mouth their platitudes. Editorials chant conventional wisdom....

...But when the hateful crime involves white victims and accused minorities, there’s a problem. Jackson and Sharpton aren’t there to round out the second act...

...But mostly we’re of a certain class and tone: white and college-educated, politically liberal, holding an abiding (and terribly mistaken) faith in government regulation to engineer social outcomes. Journalists generally mock evangelicals for “believing” in creationism, yet many journalists are fundamentalists when it comes to other beliefs, like using skin color — not the content of someone’s character or the quality of their mind — to discriminate against those of other hues while defining such discrimination as fair and affirmative...”
